i've been stuck in the death realm for over four hours now. It's getting too much for me! I try to speak to some of the characters & either the bots or the other ones run away. When I run after them to catch up, I fall !
It's really getting too much for me. Please help.
-
First, there is a difference between being stuck and being lost.
If you can move then you are not stuck and there is no need for you do /unstick
If you fall out of any path in the darkness, if the /unstick doesn't allow you to move, then the command to use is /die
If you are using the first person view, you won't be able to see your feet, even when looking down. So you can use the M key to toggle to third person view. Do not run since you don't know where to run to.
Once you can move, look around. It's the death realm, a dark and scary place. What you are looking for, is an exit. There is a magic portal (sparkling stars moving up) inside the mouth of a stone carved face.
The purpose of the death realm is to keep dead souls forever. Only the bravest are able to find a way back to life...at least in theory. In fact, as it is implemented right now (a search in this forums would have helped you), every curious explorer can find the way out.
In 4 hours, you should consider that you might have explored more than once the same places. Look around and ask yourself if there is a way to reach a place you did not yet explore. Not all places are reachable, but some are, including the exit.
Hundreds of people actualy found the exit by themselves. You can be one of them, or simply a follower of anyone you see passing by. If you can't follow one single running person up to the exit, follow each one until you reach a fork and see where the next ones are running to. Then look at the path they went to, explore it lookiing for a fork or the exit.

I finally managed to escape with help from another member. I'd just like to raise the point that for a newbie, that's FAR too hard.
-
Vazsingh, I met you in the arena today and you did just the right thing by in character asking for help. Sorry you found your way to the DR, but it happens frequenty. As I said to you then, the path of the newcomer is a difficult one. I think this is by design. Stop to talk to people in character, build relationships, and Role Play. Gaining tria, weapons, and progression points for training should always be a second priority. Tis the way this world works. Everyone is happy to help, if you approach them the right way. G'luck ;)

The main problem is that newbies expect some huge neon sign saying "Death Realm Exit Here!".
You just have to explore a bit to get out, dieing is supposed to be annoying you know
It's not even hard anyway, you just need to follow the path and use common sense.
-
aaw there aint gonna be a 10 ft exit sign :@#\

I'd just like to take this oppertunity to thank the following people who helped me during gameplay.

Beliy
Zif - very big thank you
Balonik

Slight spoiler removed. Try to avoid giving hints here :] --Karyuu

The Death realm was annoying when i was a newb
i first logged onto the game EARLY in the morning so there was barely anyone to help me out.
after a lil bit of exploring and help from a very kind person i got out. (his name was [and still is] dowanger)
dieing wasnt even my fault. i fell through the floor. >:( o_0
-
Welcome to planeshift anyway... and glad you got out of the land of the dead.
-
i will usally help anyone lost in the Death Realm. just try typeing "/tell lanorie" without the quotes and lanorie is now my name
-
Will it be legal if I write a tutorial "How to leave Death Realm"? This place is very annoying and it's a big problem for newcomers (it's my luck that I found the way outside, first few corridors are the most problemative...).
-

And THAT right there is the bug on the top of my hate list. It drives me nuts to fall off the end of the world because I slipped through a tiny crack. Can we put some sort of "safety net" just below the known world to stop the fall so we can /unstick back to where we were?
-
"You fell off the edge of the world and died."
Since that can only happen because of bugs, I think they should make it something a little bit less fatal and more non-fatal.
-

You won't be able to share it on the forums, and we would not like to see this tutorial shared on public websites either.

You have GOT to be kidding me.
I'm an adult. I don't have time to spend hours aimlessly wandering the "death realm." I want to play the damn game. Nobody in there I've asked has any more of a clue than I do. What, is this some sort of sick initiation to your game? Maybe the rest of the game is ok, but I'll never find out.
I don't even care if a moderator deletes this, because at least that means they saw it. I couldn't find some sort of customer service email to talk to, so this is how I'm making my displeasure known.
No wonder this game is free... you get what you pay for.
-

So leave already. The death realm isn't that difficult to get out of anyway.

You aren't a customer. It's a free game. :o
Dude... the death realm is NOT that difficult to get out of, especially if you ask for help.
-
Its a pity nobody seems to have the patience required. This isnt some quick little RPG with instant teleports to your favourite location. Its a huge sprawling world thats community based and centred around Role playing. Ive only been on 2 weeks and I get that.
The Death Realm is very hard for your first time. Once you have worked out where to go, it takes 3 minutes of running to clear it. Which Is kind of a shame. Im looking forward to more areas to explore there. But keep the faith fellow newbies. You will find your way.
-
WOW! The Death Realm does really get some peoples backs up doesn't it...... Well done Devs, you must have made a good job of it ;)
I personally like it, I spent a while down there when I first started playing, and it really annoyed me but that just means you have to explore abit. Oh, and I met someone there yesterday who asked me to lead them to the way out, then decided they would rather explore a little, glutton for punishment if you ask me ;D

The DR is a very unenjoyable introduction to the PS world. I spent 2 hours in the lower abyss of the DR, searching around in a pitch black environment, not knowing what to look for. I was told look for an exit ??? What exit, I know I am not alone in PS by not having a long background in online gaming, and this initiation was almost enough to make me quit and I have more patiance than most.
After 2 hours of roaming, I bumped into a Menki who had just started aswell, but he was lucky enough to have met someone prior to dying that was willing to help him. He told me to kill myself to get out. Kewl i thought, I died to get in, why not die to get out ? After typing in the die command, I found myself back to the giant flesh bag I had questioned for 15 minutes the first time I was there. 'Great' i thought 'here we go again'. This time I was not alone and i tried to follow the other walking dead, still learning the controls, I was left behind by many others who knew the way. I fell of the path a few more times, but luckily died from the fall and was sent back to the start instead of being on the lightless floor of the DR.
I managed to find my way to the library in the DR, 'Exellent' I thought, 'Now I'm getting somewhere', well after asking a few unhelpfull people who's replies to my question "Pardon me kind sir (or madam) would you happen to know the way out of this evil place?" 'Just follow the path', 'Its not that hard, you will find your way', 'for 200 tria, I can show you', 'Your screwin up our RP newbie' I was very frustrated, to say the least. Another hour spent aimlessly going over the same paths and areas, dying a few more times trying to jump to areas that looked like they could be a way to the 'Exit'.
Getting close to hour 4, I finally found a willing soul that took the time to show me the way out from there (I think it was Marra). She was very pleasant and patient, as I was very awkward still with the controls. I was finnaly free from the DR.
I understand the conept of the DR and look forward to the expantion of it. What I am trying to get at is that for the unexperienced newcommer, it is a extremly frustrating way to start your PS experience. I bet there have been a few who have quit because of the difficulty trying to get out of the DR. Whenever I am there, I mainly walk out instead of running so I can help anyone asking for guidance out. I bet a majority of newcomers end up in the DR within the first hour of starting the game, and dont have a clue on where to go or how to get help. If they are shown once, they are set and can explore all thay want knowing they can find the exit.
So be kind to the dead newcomers and guide them when you can. I know many here already do help the newly dead find thier way out, and your kindness does not go un-noticed.
Happy death everyone :)

Whenever I am there, I mainly walk out instead of running so I can help anyone asking for guidance out.
I will usually linger near the library entrance for a while, looking for those who appear to be seeking the way out. Then I will ask them if they need help. I figure, as long as I'm there anyway, I might as well help someone else out.
-
Ha! Just like you Laragorn I spent such a long time in that god-forsaken library! I thought that there must be a secret level or a bug that wouldnt let me out. I ended up quiting PS because of that but a year later I wanted to give it one more shot and made a new char (who died shortly after creation). Somebody helped me out eventually and I was loving the actual game!
-
When I was new, I actually restarted my character twice because I got stuck in the death realm. But I got better at it eventually, and it truly wasn't that difficult to start with. I was just using a really bad computer screen that was way too dark.
-
I had problems in DR also... but mostly it was because my screen was so dark in some places that I simply could not see at all. I could see other people because they had just enough color brightness to make out.. but the rest of it was pitch black in some very dangerous places. The only way I finally made it out was to inquire of help. After this a very kind and patient soul helped me feel my way out. (which took quite a while since I was nearly blind in there and died twice to falling even with help).
What I wish is that there was some kind of gamma adjustment available in game.... at least to some degree...
I now wish NEVER to die again. As DR exists.. it is simply not a place I can hope to navigate (since I can't see).
Another suggestion is to place the darkest spots in areas that are less dangerous and provide a pinch more lighting in the most dangerous ones. This way new folks have hope to get out by using common sense alone.
I would hate to pester my fellow players at every death to be my "Seeing Eye Dog" LoL
PS - I have a nice flat pannel monitor on which I have played MANY intense MMORPGS (EQ, EQ2.. etc... etc...) This is the only one I have had any difficulty with darkness.
-
Sherice, you may want to try running PlaneShift with the -fullbright option if you are having extreme difficulties with lighting. For instructions, check this post (http://hydlaa.com/smf/index.php?topic=25005.msg276673#msg276673).

I now wish NEVER to die again.
Wow... First time I've ever seen someone with one post say that! Thank the gods!
-
I want to play the damn game.
"Playing the game" means "being there and meeting other players". If you expect a red thread and a goal to reach, when finally an ending sequence will be played showing you as the winner, then you are already wrong. Your only goal is to develop your character (in stats and skills, or in manners, relations, and personal experience - as you like). But you will never "finish" PlaneShift, except you decide not to load it up anymore.
Nobody in there I've asked has any more of a clue than I do.
Very hard to believe. Most dead people rushing through the Death Realm should be able to show you the way out - you just need to ask (maybe even "/shout" that you need help). There were even guilds which gave their members a task to guide newcomers through the Death Realm to earn Guild Points.
I couldn't find some sort of customer service email to talk to, so this is how I'm making my displeasure known.
Well - this place is a possible way. The IRC channels on FreeNode are possible as well.
Never forget: All developers are just people. Furthermore: They work in their free time, as a hobby. They don't get paid.

Hello! I finally made it out!
That bit I met you at is probably the hardest. I only found the way through accidentally!
