I think that ships and/or submarines of some sort should somehow be in Planeshift. It would be interesting to have voyages over oceans. As no creature can survive underwater for extremely long periods of times, that is where submarine-like vehicles and ships come in. Having the ability to navigate on water and underwater will create many new possibilities. And of course, there is always the topic of things being realistic being brought up. These ocean cruising vessels will provide the answer to exploring, and from my extremely limited experience, I have never seen or heard of a RPG (any kind) that had this idea implemented into it. Below are some examples of the advantages to having ships and submarine-like things.
One: New and Unique in Many Ways
This is pretty much obvious, as traveling on land and water are different. For one, fighting will be changed somewhat (think guild wars on ships). Drowning will be very interesting. Methods of traveling will be changed, too. Also, this might require teamwork if no NPCs are hired to sail. Thre are many other ways that having ships will change gameplay.
Two: Even MORE places to explore.
Obviously. As said before, no land creature can just dive underwater for a few days or so (unless I\'m mistaken) and come back to the top without drowning first (if they get back to the top). Flying creatures need rest, too. Threrefore, ships and the like are needed to travel from one place to another.
Three: Can be fun, Under Certain Circumstances
Think about it. traveling on land is the same as traveling on water, except traveling on or under water gives you more things to do (or so I think). For example, a mutiny occurs on board. Ouch. Another example: The boat sinks. The third example: A vicious sea monster attacks the ship. And on and on the examples go. Anyways, when all of these are used \'in harmony,\' then sailing can be fun.
If this idea has been brought up before, sorry. It gets boring looking page after page of stuff while looking for the idea you are looking for.
Otherwise, any more ideas or complaints on this?

depending on the size of the world, the sailing would be great, however submarines might not really work with planeshift, the first known submarines we\'re during the cival war I believe, and the technology of planeshift seems to be limited to what resembles our midieval times.
-
Yeah, the size of the world and oceans will affect sailing.
As for inputting submarine-like \'things,\' we can just say that someone somehow managed to invent it, or a sea creature can be used for underwater transport. The latter is rather unlikely to happen, as there is usually no other place for people to rest in other than in the mouth of a creature. As to when submarines where invented, I believe there were submarines before the American civil war, but they were only one person manned submarines. *Does a little research*
Ah, submarines were known before the American civil war, but after medieval times. Here (http://www.submarine-history.com/NOVAone.htm) is the link where the information was recieved. Anyways, my point is that submarines of some sort, whether living or created from scratch, can be inputted into Planeshift. They might not be, if the devs decide that technology of the creatures of Planeshift is too limited. Or submarines can be part of a quest, or something similar. *Continues rambling about submarines for a long time*

Hmm a nice underwater world could add a good touch to the game - but i guess you wouldnt need a submarine as there is a race (nolthrir) that is/was used to live in water ... maybe they could have a city somehwere in the \'ocean\' that is limited to their race (as they are the only ones to survive longer periodes underwater).
-
I tihnk a higfh level magic spell or achlemy could give temporary abilitys to surive under water, this ouwld add new aspects to quests and all
-
Actually, there are 3 races who can stay underwater for longer periods. Nolthrir live underwater. Klyros can breathe underwater too. Krans don\'t breathe at all, so thay can also stay underwater.
-
If under water aspects are incorperated (which i am hoping is) how would the battle systems change with the complete sphearical movement capabilities?
also i owuld like to see underwater sports ..... sometihng liek blitzball(FFX) :]
-
I think characters should have the ability to swim, as well as dive. Perhaps there could be some sort of magical charm incorporated to give you the ability to breathe underwater?
Oh, and about the Kran: if I were a Kran, I wouldn\'t go near the water for fear of sinking and being to heavy to swim back to the surface again. :D
-
i know this would be hard to do but i think it would be awesome if you could fly skyships around. I know everyones been talking about ships and submarines but a secondary way of transportation could be in skyships!
-
Actually, I believe airborne transportation comes in the form of winged creatures, i.e. the Megaras.
-
If you were a Kran you would simply walk on the bottom of a body of water. The only risks are when the slope up to the surface is too steep or slippery.
