My female Klyros character, Rhicora, has been called "sir" one too many times! PLEASE check the description of any Klyros you run into before using terms such as "sir". This is especially true if you are playing a Klyros yourself, who would certainly know any difference that exists between a male and female Klyros!
On a related note, Kran are not male or female, so you shouldn't refer to them as such. It can be hard to do so, but it'll be more accurate.

Oh yeah... you really owned me when I referred to you as sir :p
-
ty for reminding me, I really forget that there are female klyros out there,
-
He. She. It.
:D
-
Really, if you'd just follow my example and refer to everyone as "you there" then this wouldn't be a problem...
-
Bah, it's not our fault we're confused from your bulging pectoral muscles. :(
-
Really, if you'd just follow my example and refer to everyone as "you there" then this wouldn't be a problem...
if we all followed your way hell would be on earth... :whistling:
Anyways... I agree... read descriptions... after all... it is what your character would see... doh.
-
And I would be king... :D
Anyway, as far as reading descriptions, I sympathize. An annoying amount of people have not bothered to read and therefore discover that I'M A LEMUR! NOT AN ELF!

ahm yes, that's part of the actual female klyros life  I have this problem with mine as well.. of course X-/ as long as the female klyros is stuck with the male model, one is inevitably mistaken(?) and treated as such by strangers most of the time.. that can be quite annoying.. and that is not the only problem a female klyros char encounters.. hmpf..
This is especially true if you are playing a Klyros yourself, who would certainly know any difference that exists between a male and female Klyros!
differences between male and female should normally be quite obvious to anyone.. it is just that the female model is not available yet.. right? ???
-
Sorry Siteri... looks like I made the same mistake yesterday too. And no I am not sexist by any means, but I just don't have the time to read everyone's description... especially when we're at a party with truckloads of people.
All these problems will be solved when the female Klyros gets a model of her own. Until then, I'll just say that I forgot my glasses or something since it's not something dead obvious on a first glance.
-
Mind if I just call you all Pat? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pat_(Saturday_Night_Live))
-
The way I think of it is that, since Klyros are reptiles, males and females aren't as easy to distinguish as with the mammalian characters. It's possible if you know a lot about Klyros, though... they would have different physiques, maybe different markings.
Which still doesn't excuse people ASSUMING that any random Klyros they meet has to be male... although this DOES happen with animals in real life. Some people refer to animals as male, saying things like "Oh, look at him go!" even if they don't know for sure.
-
A few of us older players (!) may remember that Finara Pund used to have the appearance of a male dwarf. This might have been a mystery to some but we female Stonebreakers know full well the consequences of spending long hours on duty and not having the time to shave.
So it might be prudent to check the gender of a 'male' dwarf before addressing him/her
:P
Arka :D

Yeah, in general everyone should look at the descriptions as they meet new people. Although, some characters use the description window as a personal diary instead of a "first glance" information page, writing down paragraphs and paragraphs of personal history there is no whay anyone could learn about them just by looking at them heads to toe. But I don't want to go off topic here, just a little rant... anyways, to keep things in order, check this first (http://hydlaa.com/smf/index.php?topic=22592.0) (and the link in that thread).
Now, on another note: how come Klyros have nipples... or are they... er... something else?
-
I usually avoid referring to a Klyros that I have never met before with any gender-specific nouns or pronouns until I have had a chance to check their description. Although we as players can not tell them apart by what we see (the model), I think our characters can. The same thing applies to telling apart races that share a single model. Even if I am too busy at the time to read an entire description, I will still pull it up and look for that very important sentence stating that you see a <male/female> <race>.
-
"Sexist" is a very inappropriate word in this context IMO. I know that many people don't read the descriptions, possibly they don't know it's there, or don't know how to easily access it.
However, I don't mind. If someone asks, I'll clarify, if not, then I'll simply ignore it unless it gets picked up and brought as topic into the conversation by others.
IMO, it is the same as with persisting typos: you either ignore them, or you send a simple /tell to give the other the chance to know. In no case do I make it significant for my RP. Occasionally I use "/me is female".
Regarding the question of nipples: I've pondered this myself, and my conclusion was that the settings gives the answer: basically, it states that the races interbreed heavily, and that whatever parents there are, the child is one race or another, with the only exception of the Ynnwns. Therefore, Klyros must be genetically compatible with the other races, and if this is the case, then the reproductive system necessarily is compatible as well, including secondary reproductive organs. Therefore, I've come to regard all except the Kran as "races", with Kran being "species".
The necessity of mammalian secondary reproductive organs like breasts then mandates that females have at least a slightly different form than males. However, given that even in RL humans these features can be blurred or completely hidden by other features like muscle, it is not necessary that the female Klyros be obvious to everyone.
Given their otherwise reptilian / fishy / batty / whatever properties, the likelyhood of such a comparatively minor visual difference is comparatively high, especially since their other environments may dictate more similar forms, anyway (for streamlining, for example).
So I think they're less obvious, but still distinguishable upon closer visual inspection.
-
First of all, dont think its just you femalesĀ X-/ I happen to be a male Kylros with people calling me a "she" or "her" wth! I guess it IS because i accidentally had 'female' selected during char creation, but in my description it clearly states 'Gender: Male' or something like that
-
I know this is a really old topic but.... Should still be looked at
I play a male klyros... and i find it funny that all these women are complaining about it being sexist... If you've read enough about the klyros race, you'd have read that: Other species often mistake their sex, therefore, the klyros often define their sex as they greet :), just as i often say as my klyros, that he can never tell the furred kind apart hehe ;D, besides, you can't tell people what or who you are, unless its ic, you can show them what you look like... but if they think you look like a male even with your discription.. they may just be rping that they don't know your a female, or that they just want to tease you about it :P
-
In the real world, there's not a description hovering above our heads. Am i being sexist if i mistake a dyke for a man?
-
In the real world, there's not a description hovering above our heads.
That's because we have visual descriptions, if I've got a scar, I don't need to tell people I have a scar because they can see it. As for Klyros females, don't stress about it. What did you think would happen when you decided to choose a female Klyros knowing full well that the model is the same as the male's. Be honest to yourself, how many descriptions do YOU read?
-
Everytime I see a nonunique model, especially that male Dermorian model. I read at least enough to read race or gender in Klyros' case. There is really no reason not to, just double click on the person, look and close it.
-
RP people... There is no reason I can think of to FORCE someone to read your biography... i mean description. I was chatting with a mage-type that kept [pointing me to his description] because he was a "weak" character and "it is too difficult to RP that"... I found that annoying. I don't get that kind of information when I meet someone on the street. If anything, I scan all the way to the bottom to get a "feel" for the characters strength. This is a personal habit to help me determine newer players from established players.
If you REALLY don't like being confused for a male/female, choose a different race to play. It isn't like you are limited in stats/skills by race.
[EDIT] Also... if I were to read every single character description, people would get upset with me for being rude and ignoring them in "main"... It seems to me there is no way to resolve this without someone getting their feelings hurt.
-
It is not meant to be a biography. If it is then you are simply doing it wrong. Also, if you scrolled to the bottom of mine and checked to see if I was wearing armour you would likely think I had started about ten minutes ago which is not the case.
-
I agree it is not intended to be a Biography, but the new character creation sets all of your creation options in there. PS is not giving new characters a good example of what should go in there right now.
I have never seen a description of "armour"... but like i said, I don't usually read them. If I do, I just look for the "appears to be weaker that you" or "May be impossible to defeat" tags that are auto-generated.
-
I meant that if you not only looked at the bottom of my description but also looked at my character to see if he was wearing any sort of armour, as many people do as an ooc means of seeing how long people have been playing, you would assume that I was fresh off the noob boat. This misconception stems from people believing that character development involves leveling and buying equipment.
-
I agree that people do that, but I only use that as one factor. I tend to play things very cautiously until I get a better feel for if they are new or not. Given the settings regarding this particular issue, and mixed with my character's inability to read the description of characters... I might misunderstand a characters [EDIT] gender on-purpose. I was mining the other night and truly had a hard time telling if the character was male or female. I played it neutral until something gave it away.
If you want to play things a bit more PC (politically correct), you could RP the gender as ambiguous until you get some IC clue to tip you off. If you are playing a character of this race, please... be as indignant as you want about it... but leave it in-game. This is a settings-compliant RP conflict you are going to have to deal with. People, in general, are not just teasing you.
-
I'm sure Kaerli gets taken for a n00b at times (she wears LA for agility's sake...)...
Also, on descriptions: Maybe we should add a section to the Player Guide on writing 'em. That would be good for those n00bs who don't happen to have experience or the tutelage of a veteran RPer to help them.
-
if n00bs read they would be newbs and newbs can figure it out just fine.
-
Ok, this thing happens often. Klyros male and female are identical, if you see them on PS, and they're not the only ones. Male Lemurs and Nolthrir are called Dermorians. I have to admit it, I did the same error, some times, and I am sorry. But somebody keeps doing it and it isn't right :(
We should change races, I mean, do different images for males and females klyros or for dermorians nolthrir and lemurs males and others.
Well, not actually WE, who build these things ;)
-
I am not a dev, but know enough about computers and 3-d modeling to know that it is not a trivial task to come up with all the models for the different races. I have faith that they are working on the remaining race models, but it takes time... and most specifically the time of those talented individuals that are good graphic artists that also know our rendering engine. This really narrows down those qualified to do this type of work. Add to that the fact that this is a volunteer project... I hope you get the point.
I am not saying you can't get frustrated, just keep in mind how much work has gone into things already, for free. That you can play, for free.
Getting back to the original topic though, even the race description says that the male/female members of this race are often confused for each other by other races. This is on purpose per the settings, not a botched rendering job.
-
As sort of a temporary fix, couldn't there just be some recolors to the existing models? Of course still work on new models, but for the differentiating races.
Yilan Female - Dermorian with brown hair (Demorian seems better for them than Ynnwn to me)
Xacha Male - Yilan with pale blue skin and maybe red hair
Xacha Female - Dermorian with pale blue skin and maybe red hair (Once again Ynnwn are huge!)
Lemur Male / Female - Dermoian with pale azure skin and a hair color to help differentiate from Xacha (I feel kinda bad suggesting moving all these races to the exclusively Dermorian female model)
Nolthir Male - Dermorian with Nolthir female's skin and maybe hair colors
Hammerwielder Male / Female - Stonebreakers with hair color change
Diaboli Male / Female - Ynnwn with hair color change maybe darker skin
Kylos - Make one of them them bluer or grayer, preferably only slightly so its still hard to tell unless they are side by side :P
It may look kinda shabby but I it will make it easier to tell apart and I don't think be too difficult to make a few color changes to existing skins (coming from no experience so I might be wrong).
-
since it would take almost as much time to do a recolor of the races as to make new ones, including getting talad to approve, just sit still and wait till they are made.
-
You're right, Arlaton. Dermorian are better than Ynnwn/Diaboli (we confuse them, too, sometimes...I think.) for humans.
For the klyros may be better create some kind of short dresses for the females. I know, they aren't mammals, but they're still a bit human-like, I think.
And, yes, let's see if Talad approves.
