Title: "Rare" Quests
Post by: zanzibar on November 08, 2006, 08:52:30 am
Is it really necessary for certain quests to be rare?  I'm thinking of the Levrus Rat Eye quest, Brintec's Ulbernaught Fur quest, and a number of others.  I understand that these quests are supposed to be special, but aren't all players supposed to have equal access to the different features of the game - and therefore equal access to quests assuming equal merit?

By rare, I mean that the quest is only available once per a certain period of time.  If someone is granted the quest, then no one else is offered the quest for what seems like a very long time.

Hmm never heard of those quests. Perhaps they are some of the mysterious glyph quests I have never come across. I do agree. I also think that if they are repeatable quests that should be rethought so that they are not abused for the purpose of making money by selling whatever reward is proferred. There seems to be a market for glyphs that seemingly are only available by quest which in turn causes some people in the know to redo these quests perhaps at the expense of others. It is possible that these people are using different alts to get the rewards but it should be that every character should have to do every part of the quest for themself. So I could not go out with bilbous and hunt ulbernauts until my pack is full of fur and then do the quest with all the untrained alts. This is speculation on my part as I do not know that this is not the case.

If some glyphs can be get into the PC part of community, while these glyphs are supposed to be rare, it would be crazy to allow every player get it. The glyphs simply stop being rare.
Think.
It doesn't matter that you was unlucky and feel that you should get it, because you are special. You are not, you are just another player and you can't have everythink. What matters is the PC community in general, not you.
So if there is time limit beatwen succesful attempts to finish a quest, its quite good solution.

Although, if someone use another character to finish the same quest multiple times, or does it with different alts only to sell the glyph, its big abuse.
It doesn't break the amont of the item in the PC community balance, but it is highly unfair for those of us who doesn't cheat and abuse.

My point was that there are some people who, for whatever reason, "farm" scarce resources. They then turn around and sell these scarce resources for exorbitant amounts. It may be within the server policy and may even be in character but it prevents other people from getting the full experience of the game. I have to say that I have not gone out of my way to try and do all the quests, I have not even managed to complete all the quests I have received.

I think that rare quests should be one time only or if repeatable by character have a time out function so that you cannot do it two, three, four times in a row without someone else having a chance to try it. This would require additional coding to keep track of which characters have done it recently and to remove them from the eligible quest recipients but I think it would go far towards ensuring fairness. One thing that could reduce this penalty would be for the list to reset if the quest was not handed out for a set period of time maybe a month, two weeks or whatever depending on the relative rareness of the quest.

I don't think I am special but I think fairness should be the goal and one person doing the quest $x times and others not being able to do it at all is not fair.

Using alts to redo quests is a hassle and I don't think that such behaviour should be stopped because it will only end up hurting innocent players.

Quests are supposed to be very profitable.  The idea is that characters are supposed to be able to advance more quickly by doing quests then they could ever manage to advance by just camping mobs.

So make it so that you can only do the quest under certain conditions.  For instance, you have to have solved all other quests by the NPC in order to get the quest, plus you have to have enough training in a certain area or something.  That way, the quests remain rare, but everyone still has equal access based on merrit.

My point was that there are some people who, for whatever reason, "farm" scarce resources.

That's exactly what I want to to see prevented.  If you get the quest, that should not stop me from getting the quest in and of itself.
