I'd like socks support (so I can tunnel connection via ssh! \\o// ), and some audio configuration options (I'd like support for arts server, for example)...
About the game, it's perfect like that!

Me too.
People who don't have broadband connections, and who are doomed to use satellite services, need to use a proxy software to connect to the internet. This software does support SOCKS, and if SOCKS version 5 is supported, even UDP connections could be possible.
I know, satellite connections have extremely long PINGs ... but at least it would be a chance to visit from time to time, without the need to pay twice (for a call-by-call ISDN connection parallel to the sat flatrate).
RFC 1928: SOCKS v5 protocol (http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc1928)

I've played PS with pings in excess of 10,000ms (10 seconds) before, so it is possible to play the game successfully with tonnes of lag.

I'd expect PINGs around 500 ms, at most 3 s.
And Laanx "herself" lagged for minutes sometimes. ;)
