Hello,
I have been playing this game for a little less than a week now and am really having fun with it. I wish I hadn't started with the character that I have but I am not going to spend another week building up a new character. I am Vorombe if anyone has seen me out there. This is all so new to me.
Anyhow, I find it very cumbersome chatting with other characters using the /tell command. I have to type /tell (the character's name) and then the message. All this for maybe a two word response to a question and then I have to do it all again for another response. I am sure I am missing something in the whole chat thing, can someone help?

If you press 'f' it will automaticly bring up '/tell [name of person that most recently sent you a tell]' in your chat window. :)
-
if its a regular thing then you can always use your buddy list, it allows you to use a button to talk to people in /tell.
another option is to ask people in main chat, always in character of course.
the final option is to join a helpful guild (like Elemental Light ;)) then you can ask in the guild chat channel any question you like that is Out-Of-Character

Shameless guild advertising.
The Great and Helpful Imperial Intelligence Agency looks down upon that from it's high and respected place.
:P

One thing that should be mentioned about the f hotkey is that it only works when the chat interface is not active (obviously) so in order to have a conversation by tells using this method you have to keep de-activating the chat interface. For me that means clicking somewhere outside the chat window with the mouse before I want to reply. It may be that this has improved in the new chat interface. I don't think the new interface has been added to the standard linux client yet which I use. I could be wrong.

There is an option in the in-game options screen under the chat-section-tab-thing. It deselects the chat window and returns focus to the main window after you send a message. With this hit 'f' to reply to the last person who telled you. If you want to use the other channels and talk normally just remember to hit the 'enter' key (on the mac that is - the most bottom right key for you other people) before you want to say anything.

Well I just learned something, glad I stopped by.

The fkey is a great tip, thanks for it !
@Bilbous: I'm on Linux too, and if you want to switch from chat window to main window and vice-vesa, you can use ctrl+enter... ;)

It puzzles me that this thread is titled Chatting 'in character.' ???
-
I think it means in game rather than the usual use of the term 'in chracter'

Hello all,
Well I see we have a rough crowd out there..
Rough but helpful..
This is the newbie section after all and if it was a dumb question I apologize you sarcastic folk, but I thought this was the safe place to ask my stupid questions.
I was on last night running around aimlessly and chatting with people who were very nice AND helpful and it was much easier using that "f" hotkey. Tonight I will give the chat option thing a try, I also find it difficult(on a routine level not physical or mental) to shift back out of the chat window after chatting. I many times chat "r" when I am trying to run after speaking with someone. Not that I am antagonizing anyone but just because it is time to go. I think the chat focus option might do the trick.
These are the little gameplay tips that make the game much more enjoyable. I would rather think about what I am trying to say "in-character" which is not that easy for me, than whether or not I am in chat mode or /tell or main screen or blah, blah, blah.
And yes, I guess I could have just said "chatting" as my topic...
Thank to everyone.... even the sarcastic... Hope to see you out there.....
Just trying to make my way through this extremely entertaining game..

Maybe is the title a bit confusing or at list showing a confusion about the "In Character" IC acronym.
/tell is used to talk between characters. IC is something else. It is about talking in the role of your character instead of chatting like ta player (this being OOC=Out Of Character)
In fact, it is often considered that the /tell communications are most of the time OOC. Because there is no explanation for your character to this possibility to talk and hear people talking to him from any great distance and even from the death realm.
Are characters capable of magic or telepathic communications? This is not specified in the settings.
Now, about private conversations (IC or OOC) in /tell, tuning the options can make it very easy.
Personaly I use [Tab] key to auto-reply tells, and [enter] to exit the chatbox.
[tab] is also very useful when typing the firstname of your correspondent when already in the chatbox. Just type the first letters and [tab] will try to auto-complete it. It will look for firstnames in your buddylist and the ones you heard talking in any chanel.

I try to avoid talking to people using /tells because it's out of character. I try to resist that temptation and instead I wait to talk to someone when I run into them. It isn't easy, but it's a much more immersive experience and I think it makes it more enjoyable for others to interact with your character.
Edit: Edited to make sense.

I, personally, would talk to any one in /tell, mainly beacause I want people to feel like they are being helped, rather than talking to someone who is just feeling like im being pretentious. I dont mean this as any form of insult to anyone who has posted

I'll talk to someone using /tell if the discussion is OOC.

Let me do a little clarification, after re-reading my last post I dont think it explains what I was trying to convey at all.
If someone ran up to me in the plaza and said in /say 'Excuse me, could you direct me to the gold mine?' I would of course tell them in open chat and IC. If someone has decided to ask me something in /tell, even if it was the same question, I would respond in /tell. I wouldnt ask them to come and meet me so that I could do it IC. I would never use /tell IC because Kran are not telepathic.
