Title: Arrow attack crash and animation glitch
Post by: LARAGORN on November 22, 2006, 04:55:23 am
Is anyone else experiencing this ?

I cast the arrow spell twice and always crash. I have done is a few times and the result is always the same.

Edit: Look down for the animation glitch.   :)

The crashes, when using magic are known and confirmed since yesterday.
Many people had the problem and the devs are working on the problem, together with all other problems, that accured since yesterday.

I confirm what Tarel says. It is a common problem, if you have a dump, please check the proper thread (http://hydlaa.com/smf/index.php?topic=26465.0) to see if there are updates on known crashes.

I have this problem also, how will these things be fixed?

Will we update the client?

At the moment, you have to just bring on patience and avoid casting missile or going to bd if you have encountered the problem earlier.

Thanks AryHann

I have an ATI card, not a Nvidia as listed in the 'Crashes and Dumps' thread, so I suspect it isnt a card specific bug.
I will try to get a Dump file sent to the Email posted in the Crashes thread.

That's a great news for helping us understanding the problem!

Instead of starting a new thread I thought i would add to this one.

I have noticed a new animation glitch while i was moving around Harnquists. my character would 'jump' for a split second, it is too fast to get a screenshot.
when moving forward or backward, it seems the legs come up to waist hight and out to the side. It is as i said very fast maybe a 10th of a second or faster.

I will try to get a screenie of it, but 45 tries yesterday couldnt capture it.

I can confirm the "Jump-and-stick-out-leg-in-a-strange-angle" problem.

It happened to me yesterday, but in Ojaveda. I could not figure out exactly what triggers it,
but it seemms to be related to a change in animation and/or moving direction. Example: I turn and then start to walk
without pausing first. (not sure about that, as Laragorn mentioned, it is extremely fast)

Dunno if thats important, but character model is female Enkidukai.

Me too i made a motion like "singing in the rain".... and it did it at Harnquist, in the wild and in Ojaveda.
For the magic i have crashed many times when casting summon missile on the carkaras in the DR but Flame Burst works (but without the animation so i can't impress girls  :'( ).

about arrow attack, this is what i have found:
Friends with linux versions have no trouble casting the spell so it seems to affect only the windows version.
You dont need to cast anything for the client to crash, if you are seeing somebody casting it, it crashes too! :o just happened to me right now.
Seems that the animation for the spell is wrong, not for the casting, the spell, it does not show the arrow but an increasing bright white light, AFAIR this animation belongs to another spell.

Hope that helps locating the problem.

About the animation glitch:
I noticed the same sticking-leg-out-kick-jump, and can sort of reproduce it by running (shift+up) or turning (left+up), from stand still (including no camera motion) in third person view. Timing a /screenshot is difficult, however taking the screen shot sometimes freezes the screen mid-jump, so a regular print screen is possible:

I am on windows, and having no problems blasting away rats with summon missile or energy arrow. The bright flashes may be a planned effect using the new CS particle system. I think it looks great :). Reasons I may not have problems are: I have not visited BD, have an intel graphics onboard thing, and use a day old CVS build (which may have the problem solved).

I think the new animation for Summon Missile is great, really nice  However, I found that there is a problem with the Flame Burst-animation.. There is nothing.. The nice dance (very nice addition I must say) and the red "circle-thingies" around the character, and then a hit without any visual flames or anything..

The spellcasting crashes seem to be due to the Windoze OpenGL subsystem feeding the graphics card drivers a bad (albeit non-NULL) pointer value, which would explain why it is Windows-only and seemingly graphics-card independent (except for Intel integrated video, which doesn't seem to have this issue, but I have no clue if Lanarel's PS is using the OpenGL renderer or not).  This actually may or may not be a PlaneShift bug per se, but a latent Windows OpenGL bug that PS is simply exposing; however, it does not happen all of the time...

I have oberved that it take in mean 3 cast to crash on my computer (amd 3200+ , 1gb ram et Geforce 6600 256mb)....
And for the BD zone, 6 steps in direction of the waterfalls... but in the opposite direction, no problem

it usualy helps to not look at all at the waterfall when your at bd, also going there when it's darker seem to help to... funny, havn't looked if the newest update fixed anything of that tho.
