Hi, I seem to have a problem that noone seems to be able to answer IG. I can not run the updater.. WAIT no it doesnt run out of mirrors like the last 200 posts here!!
Im getting the old "if you want to recieve a full update please delete version.dat file"
2 things..
1. There is no 'version.dat file ANYWHERE on my PC.
2. There is no mention of the version.dat file anywhere in my registry either.
I have tried all the old fixes for this problem, to no avail.. any ideas?
Windows XP SP2, Running 2 Nvidia 7900's in SLI running the latest Nvidea drivers.

-Make sure there is no version.dat in your main Planeshift folder
-Make sure that under "updater options" the Data and Docs folders are disabled.
-Restart the updater and try again.
-
Done all that.. and like i said there is no version.dat. its not hidden either, i checked that.. i searched the entide HDD including hidden and system folders.. i tried every concievable option in the updater options too. i still get the same msg..
I tried again with a fresh install last night.. i uninstalled, rebooted, completed a thorough regclean, rebooted again, installed and tried to update again.. STILL same msg!!

Every update the devs say to wait for word until we can use the updater. When that happens, it's generally a wide-spread news, big letters, everyone gets drunk and hits the update button. :D
Now correct me if I'm wrong, but as far as I know the big announcement hasn't come yet, so simply ignore the message while entering PS for a little longer.

so simply ignore the message while enetering PS for a little longer.
I then normally wait 2 extra weeks just to see how many problems other people have before risking it ;)

Hiya,
Launch the PlaneShift setup utility and lower the resolution of the window. You should be able to center the client window the next time you run it, and then you can resize it back. Alternatively, you can run the game fullscreen.
If the cursor does not return - can you post your system specs? Make sure you have run the game updater as well.
So as you see, Karyuu is already telling people to update!!
But your still missing the point!
My updater doesnt even TRY to update.. So, when they say to update, it STILL wont work..
Next please!

Does the game not run at all?
I dont know if PS creates Registry entries but if it does maybe you should have a go at removing them after you uninstall. Also, are you rebooting between uninstalling and re-installing?
-
@Proteous; Karyuu's responce was to another person having probs with the update, The 'official' 'Update Ready' thread has yet to be posted. I am sure they are still adding fixes for known bugs to the update.
I installed the new client and have yet to update, it is running fine for me, there are only one or 2 minor glitches that i have been able to work around. I would suggest a clean install of the client, and then waite for the update.

OK maybe now i will get some creative help.. I cant play due to incorrect version. i am running correct version, but i need to run the updater, yet still its telling me to delete 'version.dat'. now this file does not exist ANYWHERE on my PC nor in the registry i have uninstalled and reinstalled, downloaded and reinstalled again.. i have done all i can think of. So if anyone can help that would be great.

When you open your PS file go straight to the bottom and delete the "version" file it shows as a video cd movie in my file.

There has been another Client Update:
This from IRC #planeshift channel:

now read my post again!!

Have you tryed renaming the Version.Dat file instead of deleting it?
put a .old, or something behind it and try.
Not sure what else to suggest at this point.

/me waves to the readers "hello???"
proteous clearly sais he can't even find the file...
and yet you keep saying delete it...

Hello Proteous,
not sure if this will apply to your problem, but here is something else you could check:
* Is there an "updatertemp" directory inside your main Planeshift directory?
(that would be strange, as you did a full deinstallation/reinstallation...)
* If "updatertemp" exists, are you able to write files into it?
* If "updatertemp" does not exist, are you able to create it manually and then write into it?
As far as I can tell by reading the source code, the updater creates this "updatertemp" directory, then downloads into it a file containing the current Planeshift version number. If, for some reason, this file can't be written then the version check fails (i.e. "Updater::CheckRegistryVersion()" returns false) and the updater displays the famous "version.dat" message (quite misleading in this case!). At the end of the update, "updatertemp" is deleted.
One possible reason for such a "write" problem would be: if your Windows XP is a "Pro" version and you're connected with a non-privileged user.
Note: I made the supposition that you were using the "Start menu" shortcuts to launch the updater. If you are using another method (your own scripts or a manual launch in a console) then check that the "current directory" is equal to the Planeshift directory (the version check fails too if these directories are different).
I hope that this could be of any help...

Well, just so all who tried to help know, I was never able to resolve this problem, we even had a discussion in IRC involving a couple of Devs and GM's.. It is indeed a freak issue. the Version.dat file is created by the updater program itself, and as i had never run the updater in version 017 the file just did not exist. Anyway..... If any windows user ever has an issue with the updater, you may want to try the Java updater writen for mac users.. worked a treat for me, and i have to say i will use it from now on!!

on mi computer its just called version (im using windows)
-
it's called version.dat but you prolly have the default settings not to show extensions
