Title: Planeshift - WINDOWS SERVER?
Post by: Napier on February 27, 2003, 09:49:03 pm
If the Planeshift staff would consider a Windows server for hosting their game (would need editing of the code, considering I think it\'s coded in VC++), I could host the game.

I have unlimited bandwidth and about 20gb so far.  We are making upgrades soon enough though.

Install linux and get a fast connection, THEN come back. They have plenty of servers.

I believe the current server code can compile & run fine under MS Windows (in MSVC7).  You just have to run MySQL... no MSSQL support.  If you want to run a server, apply to Luca.  There is a link on the main site.

very nice, I am stuck with 56k!
1) I am wondering why you only have windows hooked up to a connection like that. Man if i had a connection remotely near that I would have multiple OS (BSD, Linux Sun, etc) behind a firewall router with a lot of port forwarding.
2)  I am wondering why you have windows hooked up to the net at all as well. I can\'t think of anything that would need a connection like that and not be required to be up 24/7.  I think Dual OC 48\'s are super fast and all but once the server is cracked tepidly then I don\'t think it would be as secure a server.
Note:  I know Linux can be cracked as well! but at least you have to INSTALL the vulnerability instead of trying to stop it after it is abused. If a vulnerability is found in Linux in the past, it has usually been patched, with servers updated, in less than 24hr.

thanks for offering the server, I hope we have a good, stable connection to play on.

Yeah, I wanted Linux... but err my partner didn\'t because hee is a l0ss0r :) lol but I can also get servers for cheap...

With one ad on a planeshift site... I could find ads that could make planeshift like $600/month... they could then buy the following

Dedicated Dual OC 48\'s
Linux
40 GB+
300gb/month bandwidth

^ $150/month!

$600 a month? That\'s funny, does it require clicks? They are probably 800x600 too, or fullscreen, and you will have to play planeshift in a tiny little corner. I bet you have dual OC/48s.... and are running Windows, your a real funny guy. They aren\'t going to put a bunch of ads in since they already have servers.

Actually.. theres tons of different options

go to my site, http://www.gamingmatrix.com

Click ENTER >

Look at my ads on that page...

Every time someone requests a brochure you get $9... Popups generate a LOT of money... and there are also impression banners...

Sad part is, all you can do is flame people that are trying to help.................................

Anyways, yeah, these would be say in the forums and out of the way... Planeshift staff could ask politely to sign up for a brochure to support the community... With this many users thats quite a bit of money...

Napier, I successfully compiled and ran a windows server last night. My problem is my client screen was black.

If any developers come this way, the dungeon world won\'t load, I\'m sure you are aware. I even tried to load it in simpmap, but it says it uses older incompatible features. It instructed me to use a fix, but it didn\'t work either. Podium also wouldn\'t work. Is there a reason for this? Is there a reason I\'m getting a black screen in my client? I get a chat window, and I am able to start a guild and use guild chat. I can\'t equip that super cool sword you gave me. More\'s the shame.

Is the blank screen a known issue? Any advice?
Thanks in advance, if you even find this. I don\'t think this was the place to post it.

I am not sure if I am right, but from what I have seen, the servers are meant to be on Linux... There may be some compatible code for windows (aka: C++?) and some that is not... I am not sure how they set up Planeshift, but if they are coding the Server-Side files for Linux alone (smarter, considering it is much more secure and better for game servers), then it shouldn\'t work fully... A windows server would be a security risk unless you have a \'REALLY\' good coder to reinforce all leaks in security...

:-\\

All depends on how Planeshift has been coded... never played the game :(

Tiraid IM me and we can try going over it... see if we can get it to work...

Planeshift Server (pserver) should run under Windows NT with neither problems nor difference

As I said, they have had more then enough server offers, and they are all willing to meet the teams expectations.

Show us a \"Connection\", or wait, you must have a fraction of a OC/48.

No its actually Dedicated, and I only have the connection because I helped her out big time...  She almost got raped at this bar and me and some friends got the guys off her...  Well I can\'t say she was gonna be raped but they were \'touchy-feely\' but if they don\'t need servers its fine... Just TRYING TO HELP! Don\'t gotta flame...
