Title: Several Ideas, in one Lump Sum
Post by: Dirk McDirk Pants on February 28, 2003, 12:16:32 am
To start off, I have a lot of idea\'s that Im going to post. Right now. Since I have just recently become aquainted with Planeshift I dont know if some of my idea\'s exist or are being implemented. Ill find out once the next version is released and I can actually play.

Now lets begin the brainstorms.

Smithing:
I think that different metals should be able to be combined to form unique weapons. Each metal can have certain attributes. Example: Copper, increase color green +10, Electrical resistance -5, Toughness -5, Earth magic +10. Or Dragon Ore, increase black and red +50, magic resistance +10, Dark magic +20, Crystal -20, Toughness +30. With this idea in mind, infinite combonations of weapons can be created. You could also make it so that during the smelting process, if you enchant the ore with a spell, the spell will remain within the sword for the duration of its existence. This would be balanecd in several ways: 1. as the ores used get increasingly more powerful the skill needed goes up exponentially. 2. To enchant ore you need to have high smelting ability as well as high enchanment.
I also think it would be cool if you could imbed the weapons/armor with magic runes, glyphs, stones, and gems. Each could increase stats minorly, or you could implant a magical stone to make the weapon more powerful.

Limb Loss:

First off, for the idea Im about to lay out to work, there may need to be body specific damage. Basically when you are hit critically on a limb, you have a low percent chance of losing that limb. After that I think it would be cool if you could get a replacement limb. The ideas for replacements are thus: A regenerated arm that its identical to you old one, a magically enchanted Golem arm, or a Dwarven mechanized arm. The two other than your normal arm could confer specail abilities and disabilities. To balance you could make the specail arms cost a whole lot, whilst making it easy and cheap to regenerate the old arm.

Huge enemies:

Im talking GIGANTIC here. at least 10X the size of a normal player. Basically you have to attack the thing with a large party of characters to have any hope of killing it. Killing it accomplishes some special quest or bestows upon the victors large amount of experience and valuables.

Terrain, Cities, Kingdoms:
Huge Forests, Forest towns
Underwater Kingdoms
Deserts, Oasis Castle\'s
Castle in the Clouds
Mechanized City
Underground City lit by luminous Crystals on the ceiling(appear as stars, soft bluish) and torches, have a river through the center.
A town built into a cliff wall
A city atop a city (layers of city)
Tundra Outpost
Ash lakes
Volcanoes
Islands with blue-green lagoons
Jungles
Caverns
Undead castle: Ruled by a enormouslyt powerful Vampire

Characters:

I think characters should physically look the same at the beggining (except the face) and ahve it so as there skill improve in certain areas it shows on the character. So +5 strength = +1 muscle, +1 stature (how straight he/she stands and/or tall). +5 Intelligence = -1 muscle, -1 stature. +5 Agility = +1 muscle, +1 stature. +5 Will = -1 muscle, =1 stature. +5 Endurance = +2 stature. I think you should look like your stats.

I also believe that your character should be actually wearing the equipment you but on him/her. That includes amulets, rings, armour, weaons, shields, clothing, shoes, and hats.

Monsters that should be there:
Sea Serpents
Dragons
Leviathan
Bone Dragons
Vampires (with increasing powers as they get older/stronger)
Elementals
Genies
Banshee\'s
Orc\'s
Goblin\'s
Giants (really giant)
Trolls (under bridges)
Giant Snakes
Giant Scorpions
Ghosts
Varying levels of Demons
Black Knights
Armored Skeletons (heavily)
Liches
Lizardmen
Swamp Thing
Golems
Will \'o\' the Wisp
Treants
Succubus
Great White Shark
Magic Floating Weapons
invisible warrior
Ninja Assasin
Ogres
Hydra
Mimics

There should also be kind non-aggressive monsters:
Pixies
Unicorns
Phoinex
Intelligent Dragons
Leprauchans
Friendly ghosts
Pan
Angels

Okay, this has gone on a little longer than I even thought...

Hope somebody likes at least one of my ideas ( hoever wishful they may be)

you mean however useless  ;)  j/k.

first the devs dont want smithing to be that big of an event in game.

limb loss is realistic But I dont know how they plan on doing that. I figure they\'ll have some prescripted movment or animation a players character does when someone deals them a fatal blow.

and huge monsters...lol how old are you.. 12?
I dont know about being huge but
The npc combatants will require teamwork

yeah a players look will change over time as they accomplish certain tasks or earn a government post though I dont know about aging  medals, shields and things of that sort are a shoe-in.

Well, I don\'t know how the other devs feel, but I would personally like to see an intricate crafting system.  The more effort/stragtegy you put in the more you get out.  This would involve many types of metals/styles/etc.  Dirk\'s ideas have some nice points, but would need a lot of tweaking work.

Implemenation problems would most likely delay that kind of feature for a long, long time.

That wasn\'t nice.  The Size of monsters will probably be limited by cave size, but due to the fact its a really big cave, I would expect to see some pretty big monsters.

Dirk, most of the monsters you have listed are \"conventional\" fantasy.  PS take will be a little more \"out of the box\".

As for wearables, configuarbility, etc. ; some look options are already there and some are planned.  The stature with weight, etc. is a neat idea, but several other features must be gone through before that would be possible (ie probbably not any time soon, if ever).

Anyway, nice list.

I wouldnt mind the occasional uber HUGE monster. I think it\'d be neat to cross by the quantillion tall monster who is on his hands and knees  :D .

I don\'t like the idea of having mosters that take a party to kill. That means I have to SHARE the glory. Whats that all about? If you could defeat the monster on your own, you could become a warrrior celebrity. BTW, Sorry if my posts are short. I tried giving blood, and now my 4th finger hurts.

cmhitman, I dont appreciate how rude you have shown yourself to be, especially on the big monster concept. The idea is perfectly sound and not \"little kidish\" like you presume. People dont often see monsters of such magnitude in games, and therefore this makes them an intriguing challenge and novel addition. Im not talking about having 10 million huge creatures, Im talking about having a special event Huge creature. One which\'s death would benefit everybody, such as saving a town from destruction. I\'d also appreciate that rather than critizing my idea\'s, you try to think outside the box and see how these idea\'s could bring new dimensions to a normally stagnent industry. Planeshift is not a game that should follow the trends of others, it should provide something more than the other RPG\'s because this game is one made from the love of RPG\'s rather than the love for money. So please, rather than breaking down my idea\'s, use them as a springboard for your own idea\'s. All the creatures I named don\'t have to be those creatures specifically, but rather they are foundations on which to build new more exciting creatures upon. I dont want to sound mean or rude, but please jump out of the box, expand your horrizons. Nothing comes from tearing down idea\'s that dont work, but the greatest creations can be made by learning to use that idea in a way that suits your purpose.

On the whole, stop critizing, start constructing.

By the way cmhitman, Im 20 years old.

20 years old, please do not insult or verbally abuse Lord Hitman or anyone here, as everyone is entitled to their own opinion (besides stupid newbies). If you do not cease your actions, you will be banish from our kingdom.

Dirk, don\'t take any of the comments too personally.  Most of the people on this board get-off flaming newbs (Link and cmhitman are top flamers).  Also, don\'t take this the wrong way, but you might want to think of a new nickname so people don\'t jump to conclusions about your age.

To the \"newbie flamers\", please understand that I never insulted you. I said that you jump to conclussions that are unfair to me. You also accost me. I may be a Stupid Newbie, but its better than being a... well, I think anyone who reads this can find there own way to end that sentence. To me you(\"Flamers\") are a only being a menace to people who really want to try to get their idea\'s out. What does threatening me do? Nothing. Do I care about getting banished? No. What do I care about? Innovation, Creativity, and as you said: and Opinion. And its MY PERSONAL opinion that youare merely rogues amoungst the forums, trying with all their might to suppress the newb\'s who they fear will become far wiser and benevolent then yourselves. When you lose all your power what will you have? By your actions you lose the respect of the entire community, this is something you do to yourselves and yourselves only. This is the only time I\'m ever going to post this type of response, therefore no longer attempt to provoke me, as it is as futile as it is infantile.

As for my name...
Im part of an organization called the Knighthood of BUH, an explanation of the organization would be impossible to describe in this forum.  They are a registered honors organization at the University of Texas in Austin. They are also, by far, some of the sharpest and critical people there are (hit and link dont hold a candle to their ability to make you feel worthless)

And a final note, I want people commenting and improving on my ideas stated at the begining of this post. Thats what this post was intended for, and therefore I would appreciate that no one continues this argument between \"Flamers\" and \"Newbs\"

Brilliant!

Well, atleast you type ok. Most of the newbies here can\'t find the shift or period key on their keyboard. Alot of the newbies come from one of three games.

Along with bringing their crappy typing, they also bring ideas from the other games and call them their own, as well as stealing other people images and models and calling them their own.

First of all I would like to say, nice list :)

I agree with you about the huge monsters. It would be nice to see \"extreme\" monsters attack towns, guard treasures or be \"pets\" to powerful wizards.

You can read more \"bodypart\" ideas here

http://www.planeshift3d.com/forum/thread.php?threadid=2519&boardid=11&styleid=2

Good terrain ideas too.
Oh, and welcome to the forums by the way.

LOL, cmhitman, your post is pathetic, did you wrote that because you didn\'t like Dirks post, or did you do it because you \"had to\"? :D

I didn\'t flame anyone... I just don\'t like the: \"lets have a huge monster!\" Idea. I\'ve seen it advetised in three games and actualized in one (endlessages). Maybe because I\'ve already seen \"Huge monsters\" in a game and seen how boring it can get for me and twenty people standing on top of a hill waitng for a gigantic spider to come from its cave. I do like your other ideas though.
anyway how mature is it for someone to get **bit-chy** because somebody said something you didn\'t like ? Calling you twelve was immature, I admit. but if anything your rebutle was more flamish than anything i\'ve said to you.

oh and all my posts are well thoughtout spam, not the tasteless spam you see newb spammers posting

Hit, you mentioned seeing huge monsters in other games. You said they where boring. How can they be made to be entertaining is the question?

I believe given the right situation they would provide a excellent break from a players normal routine.
I also believe the purpose of a mmorpg is to interact with real people, because if you don\'t want that interaction then you could easily be more happy with single play games.
What Im saying is that a huge moster could be a excellent ploy to get people interacting and working together.

Am I wrong in this?

I would like to here counter-arguments and supportive arguments.

Well big monsters would just mean that more players could statically reach it (unless clipping will take place) so that\'s a good idea.  So say an entire party wanted to kill a dwarf they\'re kinda screwed until they can solo-play it.  That\'s my view on it all.

sorry for the late reply...

 One way you could
make monsters more fun is to have them person controlled, because what we did in endlessages was really exploit the mindlessness of the games npcs. basicly a few low lvls noticed that you could get npcs meant for high lvls to come from there area. then we flew to a big hill were the npc couldn\'t reach us and all shot it at the same time in order to confuse its targeting method so that it couldn\'t lock onto any particular one of us long before another one of us shot him causing him to change focuse,... It\'s this scriptedness that made the game kind of boring.

I think that allowing dev like players (like game masters ur sum\'n) to control certain monsters for weekly attacks on the village ur whatever would be a good way to make planeshift unique and help make plaineshift less predictable and more fun.

Now that would be cool. You\'d know something is up when you see three or for gm type people on a hill looking at your villiage  8) . Maybe they could do it like a /me command. Like /me 100 level 2 parrots attack Yakabona. muhuhuahaha. I think there\'d have to be some sort of warning thing though, like right before the parrots attack you hear a horn blow or something. If it was a really big attack you\'d hear a soft sound that gets lounder as more come. :D

Several years back I played on a MUD (text-based game) called Anime where the Immortals (Game Masters) would sometimes animate mobs and run quests.  It was quite exhilarating to bum-rush an area with plenty of other players and attempt at slaying something at near-godlike stature.  Mass carnage ensued and everyone who did not run away died - but afterward, all corpses were returned to their corresponding owners, experience was given and even nice items passed out to the better players.

Having GM-possessed monsters/bosses/mobs/armies running about at various times would certainly add a new edge to the MMOG genre and certainly PlaneShift.  Some could be announced beforehand while others not, this would depend on whoever ran it.  Experience given to all participants is a plus (dependent on level and hits done to enemies so the pansies who ran don\'t get jack), gold is nice, and special items are always favored.

I most certainly back this idea of \"GM-Controlled Enemies\".  Hopefully, the PS Dev Team will add it when ready.  :)

They have this in many MMOGs (UO for instance) and it has been discussed as a possibility for PS.  From what I\'ve seen, any idea that povides extra fun for GMs and Devs is usually heavily supported.
