The filters and such in Photoshop are nice, but they can be a tad cliche. I would suggest learning the different tools for drawing (pencil, brush, and airbrush), how to make and mix colors, et cetera. Looking at a couple of books on oil painting and watercolor doesn't hurt, a lot of the old school art techniques apply well in Photoshop. Actually, Photoshop taught me how to work with oil paints. Not that I am Monet or anything, but it is really a fantastic program.

thanks guys ill get right on it/me paint like he was possesed by the ghost of Photoshop "Must paint.....Must paint" :o

Photoshop have learned me some RL painting too, not oil painting but Graffiti, but i still preefer to do the Photoshop version much easier and not soo fraking expensive ::|

Whats nice is being able to paint with colors in the different apply modes, such as multiply or hard light. You can get the colors to mix in different manners. Then the clone tool can be used to paint with areas you have already painted... actually there is a neverending level of detail to Photoshop. GIMP is very good too if you can handle the X-11 interface controls, and has a great set of plugins for it.
