Post by: Runesoul on February 28, 2003, 01:56:26 am

First off, this thing always bothers me, and everyone will see me correct it multitudes of times:

It is spelt THIEF, not \"theif\".  And Rogue is spelt ROGUE, not \"rouge\" (unless you want to be called what women put on their cheekbones...)

As for funny words/nouns:

Assassination
Assume
Superfluous
Jamacian Jerk Sauce
Spank
Weird
Umbrage
Dorcas (it\'s a female\'s name)

*Monkey-luver (Scottish accent)
*Kylsk?psmagnet  (try to figure out what that means)
*Sponge  (say it like it sounds)

Oh, and listen to this sentence.

This is a good sword...

Said by Aragorn in \"the two towers\"

it sounds so....dirty. especially since it\'s close to another word. the following dialogue happened in my class.

(somehow, we talked about cows chewing)
teacher \"is it the word, masticate? I don\'t remember\"
friend \"yes...one should go masticate in the bathroom, and not in public\"
teacher \"oh, you little pervert. yes, masticate in the bathroom if you like chewing toilet paper\"

Well, Karyuu, reviving old threads is very popular -especially with moderators. :P

So what do we learn from this? Never underestimate the lifespan of old threads which haven\'t been locked yet. ;)

By the way, here are some funny words:

Hmm, I\'m making just wild guesses, but maybe all \"Colonels\" are in fact robots, which run the Linux kernel on their hardware. :P Don\'t know...

Anyways, another funny word (one of my favourite funny words, though I hardly ever use it) is \"beachcomber\".

Not to go off subject, but a few other word uses that grate me are:

Quiet, not quite, when you want someone to shush.
Oriented, not orientated, when lining something up
You\'re, not your, when \"you are\" using a contraction
and mispelling misspelling is pretty much unforgiveable.

Palindrome is a funny word but it describes funny words like radar and level that are spelled the same forward and backward.   Sometimes phrases or sentences can be made that way:

# A man, a plan, a canal: Panama!
# A man, a pain, a mania: Panama!
# Are poets a waste? Opera!
# Never odd or even.
# I prefer pi.
# Oh, cameras are macho.
# Drab as a fool, aloof as a bard.
# Go deliver a dare, vile dog.
# Wet sanitary rat in a stew.
# Lepers repel.
# Too hot to hoot.

Skcolob

I started using this word 4 years ago when I worked in PC World for a bit.  Customers would come in and ask a question like where are your printers and I would reply:

\"You will find them over there by the Skcolob\".

And I would point to one of my colleges.

I would pay you $50.00 to see you watch it and yes ACTUALLY watch it. No bathroom breaks...you\'d have to pause the movie if you needed to heed the call of nature. You cannot speak with anyone on the phone to distract you, you have to wear your contacts, oh and just as extra security your neice wants to come watch it with you and make sure you actually watch it. :p

I like the word Lugubrius (sp?)  It means characterized by sad behaviour, ridiculously so.  Incidentaly, it\'s hard to stay lugubrius after saying it...

@Jinkeen: Note the Weird Al song \"Bob\" which is nothing but a series of bizaare (another funny word) palindromes.

Noticed on moving to Pittsburgh Pa. in the states the word
Yenz
Yeah, that\'s how you know someone is from Pittsburgh Pa. In the states.
For instance, \'How Yenz  doin today?\'
Pittsburgh is the only place I have heard the word used on a regular basis. There are other such words as Red-up...meaning to clean the house and Jumbo...refuring to bologna. All kinds of strange vanacularatory stuff here. Not to mention thier own form of ebonics. :D
It\'s like Gotham on Crack, I love it.

We didn\'t break your language...  We made up our own.  I call in Spranglish.  Sure we have some German, Chinese, Japanese and Russian words floating around in our culture as well as a lot of other stuff, but in my part of the country it\'s mostly the redneck dialect of English, Spanish, and French.

Hi,

I find these words quite hilarious:

1. pebble (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pebble), bead
2. spiracles (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spiracles)
3. repertoire (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Repertoire)
4. miniaturization (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miniaturization)

Some Latin names are funny to me:

Rhamphorhynchoidea (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pterosaur)
Pachycephalosauridae (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pachycephalosaurus)
Confuciusornithiformes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prehistoric_bird)
Raphus Cucullatus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dodo)
Sauropodomorpha (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sauropodomorpha)
Massospondylus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Massospondylus)
Moschops (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moschops)
Coelophysis (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coelophysis)
Lutra lutra (http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Lutra_lutra)
Osteodontornis Orri

When I was young, I thought General research and Major breakthrough were a kind of military personnel. Still makes me smile.

Don\'t get lost in the links. :)

The words we change that is not english to you Drey is called slang here. We never did change knickers though, here knickers means panties or knee pants according to the dictonary.

Here is the other term in the dictonary.

Chiefly British. Panties.
1: trousers ending above the knee [syn: breeches, knee breeches, knee pants, knickerbockers] 2: (usually in the plural) underpants worn by women; \"she was afraid that her bloomers might have been showing\" [syn: bloomers, pants, drawers]

@ Cherppow: I did get lost...very very...lost. :D but it was great fun and thanks for the links!
