Greetings, first time poster, long time reader :surrender:
I downloaded the new version from BitTorrent and am currently downloading from the mirror to see whether theres a difference, but, after downloading and unpacking and copying to Applications, I try to run both the updater and the client (client first), the logo bounces up and down in the dock for a moment and then disappears. I've tried restarting and deleting and recopying the BitTorrent version, but it always does the same thing. I'm running it on a slow old Mac (933mhz) and am using 10.3.9. I've had a look through the forum, but have been unable to find anyone with the same problem. Should I just wait for the Mirror version to download, or is there something I can try in the mean time? :-\
I would  some help!
I'm not that computer savvy :-[ [Edit; even more embarrassed that this icon doesnt work... but I think it proves my point!]
Thanks in advance!

Well it says your a long time reader, But i dont think youv been paying attention very well. X-/ ::| In alot of posts it says that you do not run the updater ONLY run the client. :P

I know this, and I only tried to run the updater to see if it was a client only problem, but it seems I cant run either from the BitTorrent download. If you read my post you'll see that my problem is that I cant run either, not that I tried to run the updater first. Of course I read the forums, or I would have posted a stupid 'why wont my updater run' post. If anyone else has a problem with my lack of attention, perhaps I should ammend my question to;
Does anyone know what I can do about my client, which is not running, only bouncing and disapearing?
Skooty, do you actually have an answer to my problem, or did you post only to make me look like a dill?
-
Sorry if my last post seemed rude, i just mess around alot and sometimes i get to Out of hand. But i was trying to help. And it seems i am the one that wasnt paying attention. My bad i thought that you hadnt read the posts about updating.

Skooty, now I feel bad! *sigh* My bad too, I was on auto-attack or something. Lets never talk of this again :surrender:

I have the same problem.. Its been a long time since I have played Planeshift, and it will only bounce in the dock.. And then quit. I tried running it from the Console, and that didn't work either. I'd really like to get back into the game, any help would be appreciated!

Seems like this happens when the applications do not have the correct rights associated to run properly, try either running the applications from within the administrator account, or checking the permissions under which they are running. You may have to reinstall the folder from the download under the admin account as well. I have also seen this behavior occur when the crystalspace environment is not set correctly. There have been a lot of posts in this forum about these behaviors in the past. I pulled down from the torrent last night, installed, ran and was in game for a few hours with zero problems.
-
I am installing the folder from the admin account, and I tried it once more after you advised it and it still doesn't work.
-
Did you try setting permission bits (see step 4 of Manual update portion of the Guide, but DO NOT run either updater).
-
Yes, and tried once more after you asked no dice.
Okay I tried to run psclient in console and got this:

Hmm, thats an odd one. It almost looks like either a component within the app or the system is either not accessible or damaged. I think all I could do at this point is run the Disk Utility, doing a Repair Disk and Repair Permissions. I would run the Update from the System Preferences to make sure it looked like all critical components appeared to be up to date. And then I might create a new account with admin rights to try it on again. If I got the same response at that point I would be stumped and would attempt to try it on another 10.3.9 machine to verify the behavior. Good luck with that.

Looks like a bug to me. If you have time, talk to dfryer on IRC and see if you can work out a fix.
-
OK, I tried everything in this thread and still no dice :-(
However, I did just have this problem with Shadowbane (yes! I am getting desperate!) and it was because a package wasn't being extracted correctly... or something. It got fixed by changing a setting in Stuffit Expander. I would like to know if the people having this problem are all running 10.3.9 on PowerPC's, and whether other people running the same are happy Planeshifters in game atm wondering what all the fuss is about... *sigh* It is nice to know I'm not the only one though and despite the obvious frustration of not being in game its actually really fun and educational to try and hash something like this out. I for one didn't even know what Terminal was before a couple of days ago! Now I can say things like 'yeah, I just reset my permissions in console and tried running the client, but no cigar.' Hehe. Never thought I would see the day :-) Anyway, :offtopic: !
Dfryer, we all appreciate your work, so much so that we cant wait to get in game! I hope that you dont get uber frustrated or feel unappreciated. Kudos to all developers, moderators and GM's :-)

I am running a PPC Mac with 10.3.9 and it is still doing exactly as stated above, and I have reset permissions as well.
-
I also run 10.3.9 Panther on an 800mhz PPC, reset permissions, am very sad....
Big love to dfryer!

I'm having the same problem, but I have a powerbook G4. Heres a crash log
Command: psclient
Path: /Applications/Planeshift3D/psclient.app/Contents/MacOS/psclient
Version: ??? (???)
PID: 6171
Thread: Unknown
Link (dyld) error:
dyld: /Applications/Planeshift3D/psclient.app/Contents/MacOS/psclient Undefined symbols:

Yup, I'm having the same problems with the client and setup apps quitting on launch. Console and crash logs report problems with the library libSystem.B.dylib. I'm on OS 10.3.9, 1.4gHz G4.

Could you not install a PPC port of linux and get it running that way? I know its extreme to get a new OS to play a game but you seem to really want to play.

I have a macbook and it bounces twice! it works on my emac but not much success here, im not very good with computer eithers

Hello everybody, a very late "Happy New Year!" from me!
Checked, but doesn't seem to have an answer at hand around; I have the same issue as Iridena & others, with this log:
dyld: ./psclient.app/Contents/MacOS/psclient Undefined symbols:
./psclient.app/Contents/MacOS/psclient undefined reference to _pthread_atfork expected to be defined in /usr/lib/libSystem.B.dylib
Trace/BPT trap
My laptop is a powerbook G4, 1.25Gh, 1.5Gb ram, 128Mb video, running OS 10.3.9 with all the updates - no problems 'till now.
I'm the only user, admin; I downloaded several *.dmg files, no luck; even after did the whole thing from "A Guide to Running Planeshift on Mac OS X" (I did that several times in the last two years) with every package - same log appear every time. No need to say the updater.jar is the only one working, since all three apps (the client, setup & updater) end up with different versions of this log ("updater" or "setup" instead of "client", in the log line).
Since the last entry in this post is dated 30 december, with no other tears & begs, I suspect someone solve it by now... or not? Anyway, waiting for some help, if there's an answer...
Thanks in advance and happy hunting.

Cerfil: try this (http://hydlaa.com/smf/index.php?topic=26947.msg305473#msg305473). Tell me how it goes!
-
Hey, Cha0s, thanks for the input but... I already tried that, it was the last of my attempts the other night; today I did tried again, after I trashed all the files (including the ones from my library, prefs and the rest), repaired (again) the permissions, and started downloading the files using your small zip file.
No need to say the same message in the terminal window hits me, so... I'll take a break to cool down, hoping next days will bring some good news... have a nice weekend 'till then.

Hey Hey lucky you (bit after your post but ive been trying problems and know how to fix yours!!!) :innocent:
well heres your problem with the bouncy thingy (hope it hasent been answered already)
its the admin rights conserning opening applications
heres how it needs to be placed:
1. in applications folder 9deosnt matter where
2. (this helps bypass any admin problems [hacking past my parents is easy!!] drag application icon into a notetaker page
and double click on the image.
3. should stop bouncy thing if not id try using a linux operator to bypass controls
but i hope it works
:innocent:
if not call me the
and feel free to follow this mans cue
:@#\
happy gaming
