2 weeks ago I was able to kill them (the easy one in the city entering and the other inside the city, go search ;)).
but now I am no match for them.
why are their strength changes so much ?

Well, to me it seems like about every rogue, mercenary and gladiator has gained strength bigtime. I used to be able to kill most of them, although with some difficulty. Now, I don't even have to try anymore. I'll get decapitated or otherwise dismembered in a few seconds. Getting tired seeing the death realm. :-\
Seems like a wannabe mage needs to become a strong warrior before any training can be done in the ways. :( I'll have to look for other ways to get some experience.

Are you sure all your weapons and armour are repaired up fully?
It can be hella hard to kill something with a crappy, blunt sword held together with ducktape...
Seriously, I was thinking the same thing you are before I realised my sword was 24/50...
