Many are crashing in the bronze doors level due to the new particles system not working properly on some cards (including mine!!).
If you want to load that level, I've created a version totally without particles, so you miss the waterfall, the smoke, the torches, etc... But at least it should not crash.
Get it here (http://www.atomicblue.org/temp/bronzedoors.zip). Remember that the updater is not aware of this level, so it will probably overwrite it.

Thanks for the help Talad, great to see you on bro.
Since the Bd region has soo many important quests, i think this fix will be a must.
Hope you guys get the particle thing fixed soon.

indeed, I've had trouble with this so I always take a backup, just rename the original first and put this in, then when you need to update rename the fix to something else and the original back to normal so the updater will skip it, and not download it again :p.
For linux users, just copy paste this into a new sh file, place the sh file in /path/to/planeshiftfolder/art/maps
mv bronzedoors.zip bronzedoorst.zip
mv bronzedoorstemp.zip bronzedoors.zip
mv bronzedoorst.zip bronzedoorstemp.zip
for windows users place these lines in a new .bat file and place the file in c:\path\to\planeshiftfolder\art\maps
rename bronzedoors.zip bronzedoorst.zip
rename bronzedoorstemp.zip bronzedoors.zip
rename bronzedoorst.zip bronzedoorstemp.zip
I don't know what you do in mac, but just remove the command for mv and replace it with the macs rename command xD
run the sh/bat file now before you download, and run it again before you update
after the update run this file again

This is awsome thanks :)

works GREAT... who needs all them affects? no more lag for me baby..
and peacer
i just moved the old bd folder to the delete folder, and moved the new one to the defualt folder :) easy as pie... ;)

Deadly. I was just getting ready to go on here and complain about not being able to get it to work :D
[Language warning!! -- Neko]

Had this problem and I turned the vertex buffer on in setup and it all works beaute!!

then you had something else laggin you.. vertexx buffer is for magic affects not crashing you... if anything activatin vertexx buffers would slow your comp down more..
the fix that talad posted is for bd lag due to all the effects and such.. the download'ed map removes the effects and dramitcaly reduces the load on the graphics cards..
in short.. if you have a crap card like me... this is the fix for you :)

@ Bartholin:
The particle effects did not only slow down everything - instead, they crashed my client. And I mean both the particle effects in magic spells, and the particle effects in the environment (water drops in the cave, torch flames, waterfall).
I used both - enabling VBOs, and using the new level without particle emitters. My report so far is:
- Using VBOs helped a lot about crashes when people cast spells next to me. But not reliably. I still crash sometimes.
- Only using VBOs with the original level did not avoid crashes at address 0x69732B## completely. I needed the reduced level too.
I have an ELSA Gladiac GeForce2 GTS with 32 MB video memory, and ELSA specific Nvidia drivers Build 4345. Newer drivers don't support GeForce2 well anymore. I'd love to provide more detailed information ... if any developer would tell me how I can provide them.

@LigH, you can try to contact res2k on IRC or through email or CS forum exposing your status of the investigation. Otherwise, also acraig could be interested in your results, hopefully that the problems are just related on how PS is using the particle system. Anyway, the crash in magic missile and the bd area is as you state of the same nature, due to the usage of the particle system.
Bartholin can't solve the problem as you did because he doesn't have a Nvidia card and it seems that the VBO workaround helps just them and not any other card possessor.

Just asked in #crystalspace:
'thebolt' would like to get a stacktrace from such a kind of crash. Unfortunately, I don't own a debug build.

They have got the stacktraces and they are pretty useless. They usually have just the line with the driver.dll and the memory address.
If he wants more you can make him point out on the crash and diagnostic files thread where there are some better crash for intel graphic cards.

Would it be possible to get a similar map fix for Hydlaa, mainly the Tavern and the Temple? My client also crashes there - especially in the tavern.
-
Is there no way to edit the config files to turn off the display of particle effects? I searched them myself by I'm not enough of a graphics terminology expert to know what to play with in there.
-
I think the good thing would be to fix these particles!!! ;)
Zanzibar: you must poke violently Talad

question why is it that when i first d/l the map it works great, but the next time im in bd.. all the affects are back?

If you update your client, you'll have to redownload the new map.
The map is working for me in the sense that it's not crashing my client anymore. However, it's still disconnecting me. I log in, and I'm already disconnected. I know this because my stamina bar is blank, I can't see who is online, my inventory looks empty, I can't communicate or unstick, etc. If I wait long enough, I get a message saying that I've been disconnected.
This only happens on my computer with a cheep internet connectino though. On a computer with an average internet connection, it works fine. However, this problem only happens to me in the Bronze Door region, as well as the tavern.
(By the way.... I don't suppose a GM could give my character a trip to the death realm? I thought I'd get a chance to do some Bronze Door quests this weekend, but I was too busy with other things.)

but i dont update every day.. if i leave my guy in bd when i have the "good map" and log on again (w/o having used the updater) i have the nasty map again.... its confusing.. and odd :( 1 fps sucks.

hi, i'm using a mac min G4 4 gig ram, video card is ATI radeon 9200 32 meg ram. I've always lagged like hell in BD. i've d/l the fix. I've renamed my old bd folder and put the new one. I logged out in bd region. Now.. ps doesnt start anymore, it crashes at loading the region. So i put the old one back, and ps is working.. but.. still lag... it's only when i look in waterfall direction. And the ground is still black.. so i dont see where i walk. everything is ok, Just the ground. I see the rocks, trees and everything.. :(
Never had trouble with effects of magic.

Thank you verry much! My Computer crashed when entering the Bronze Doors (loading new region)...every time without a chance to leave again.
-
Unfortunately, no. LigH has experimented a bit with it without luck :(

this worked for me... what does the Vertex Buffer Objects change when you turn it on or off? sorry if it's a stupid question :P
-
I followed the procedure mentioned here and it still crashes. I'm sure I did it correctly. I renamed the original file and copied the temporary fix into the art/world folder. What happens now is that my computer crashes right after it says "Loading GUI" and the sounds start playing.
I have 1GB RAM, and an "Integrated IntelĀ® Graphics Media Accelerator 950 with DVMT 7 3.0 delivers low-power, high-performance 2D/ 3D graphics, video and display capabilities at a maximum shared memory of 224MB"
I'd like to point out that when I first when to Bronze Doors it was fine (without needing a fix). I also have vertex buffer on, made no difference. I also updated my drivers.
-
You may have accidently installed the wrong drivers. I have done that a few times in the past :(
-
I'm pretty sure I got the right ones, I got the ones for my chipset. But I'll reinstall it and see if it does anything. Though I doubt it will. It's really weird.
**Edit**
You were right I updated my drivers again and made sure it was correct and suddenly BD works! :D

I'm not sure whether this can fix the problems I sometimes have on BDroad1: My screen turns black every few seconds, so that I even can't type a word in (except /die :)). Is this part of the problem you are talking about in this thread?
+ Vertex Buffer is turned on
+ GeForce Ti 4200
+ latest Nvidia-driver (installed 2 weeks ago)
+ SuSE Linux 10.0
I'm a totally noob in gfx-cards... You are free to laugh now :D or sending me a smoke signal.
When my screen turns black on BDroad1 I press CTRL+ALT+DEL and the KDE-session-menu comes up where I press CANCEL. Then I can type in one or two letters in the PS-chat-window and the screen turns to black again.

No, try posting in the linux forum for help also a distro upgrade might help a bit 10.0 is a bit outdated

new error
when first entering bd from the tunnel/road
a huge empty gaping hole appears to the left of the entrance
when walking over that hole in the map you fall and respawn ontop of it
and the hole is gone, ground again
solution to the memory leak/lag
simply break bd map into 3 different loaded maps
bd main land area
bd ramp & eagle's nest area
bd tunnels w/ western tower and tunnel system
i feel its just lagging and memory leaks because the video is trying to display this HUGE area all at once
and its just not working
even with minumum display distance set to 0 and fps at max or even adaptive distance adjusted similar it has no effect and displays everything all at once
so rework the BD map and split it into 2 or 3 different maps to better adjust the lag/memory leak
and also that strange blackness and hole near the entrance to the map
