If guilds are not classical guilds but rather a broader concept why are characters limited to one guild? For an OOC example I could be a member of the canadian geographic society and the national geographic society as well as the international society of geographers. Each would seem to fit the description of a PS guild and while they may be affiliated they are clearly separate entities. Is it possible to have associate guild members who are not entitled to full member privileges but can speak on guild channels?
The guild name banners are clearly out of context, the designation would more appropriately appear in the character description and could be more symbolic than literal. In other words if you look at a characters description you might see a crest with the name of the guild emblazoned prominently somewhere if they were wearing their "colors" or you might just see a small symbol that you might miss on casual inspection if they were not. Putting on "colors" would become a conscious decision where the player would add the label themself while the symbol would be a permanent mark for the duration of membership created and unremovable by the player. This would replace the ooc banner. The symbol would need to be created/uploaded as part of the guild creation process.
I had some other thoughts but they escape me now perhaps they will come back.
-
to put it simply: I agree. :)
-
A further thought is that for the "colors", the guild could have some standard issue item the character would need to equip such as a ring or amulet or even a branded chestpiece although that is clearly further down the development road than merely adding to the description as I do not believe that rings can be seen currently.

that would be intresting.. be seeing as the game is still in its pre-baby stages.. and need more work on more important things.. such a thing would have to wait.. however.. one ic example used ON me. (not by) was a guild badge.. something that would go on the chest.. or if wearing metal armor can be put on the helm , the arm, or even a leg.. who knows..
and to be a little off topic :innocent:
why not beable to have a guild badge that gives boosts.. and that the guild itself must make from scratch... would add a more intresting tid bit for the crafters... even artists and would explain the missing tria ;)
anyway.. colors/ badges / or some other way to show the guild in a ic way.. rather then ooc is wanted.. agreed :)

That wasn't off topic, the topic was made deliberately vague so as to allow discussion of a generally philosophical nature. It is also why I posted it here instead of the wish list forum. If any consensus comes from this discussion it can be posted in an appropriate thread in that forum. If nothing comes from this thread then it will just join the ranks of forgotten chatter.

OOC limitation I asume, but also becuase being a member of a guild in PS is to serve as a liveschoice more then anything else. I asume it would entail more then being a member of a organization these days where you practicly only get a magazine and a metting a few times a year.
Joining a guild would be the lifestyle you chose.Obviously only being part of one guilds is an OOC limitation, but then again you could simply roleplay being a member of another aswell eventhough the gamemechanics only allow one tag.

Hum, Imma thorw something in here. A guild is more like a family then it is a bookclub. You can be a member of two bookclubs, not of two families., unless married blablabla. If that that doesn't help, look at guilds as you would at political parties, you get on vote, you use it, and for 4 years are tied to it.
-
I've always seen guilds as somewhere along the lines of a small company, a martial arts school/group, an order of mages, a gang, or a fraternity. In that case, belonging to more than one depends on what types of guilds they are. You could be part of a glass-blower's guild and a member of the Klyros Hidden Wing fight school. You wouldn't be able to be as dedicated as if you were only a member of one, but you could still do it.
On the other hand, if you're a member of the East Hydlaa Lurkers gang, chances are you won't be a member of the Ojaveda Ulbers gang too.
Also, some are something that you're generally included in even when you "leave" and move on in life. Kinda like the military. The fraternity style guild would be like that. Martial arts style guilds could also work that way, unless you actually leave the style, and use a different, possibly rival, martial arts.
I like the items idea. Besides the OOC part of a guild banner, it just doesn't look good. Plus, it makes secret organizations more visible. In reality, you don't know somebody is a member of something unless you see some badge or uniform, or use the trademark move or spell.
-
Even if it is like a family, families can have their honorary members. For instance if Joe the street vendor pulls little Suzie from in front of the bus preventing certain demise he is likely to be "adopted" by her grateful parents. If you somehow manage to slay the Giant Consumer feasting on the townspeople is there a guild that won't try to give you a membership?
I realise that the nature of the guilds are unlikely to change but it seems that different levels of membership would be useful to have. That way you could allow that character you think is a rival guilds spy to join with limited priviliges in order to keep an eye on him.

They are called ranks bilbous ;)

Not really what I meant but I admit I don't know what I am talking about either. I should not try to talk about things I have little experience with and less real interest in. I have one character in a guild and the only game mechanic benefit is access to the guild channel. Other game benefits of guild membership would seem to be guild maintenance. I was thinking something (nebulous) along the lines of having some chatter in the guild channel invisible to some members so that the leaders could chat freely in the guild chat by preceeding their comments with "&" and members below a certain trust level would not be able to see it, for example.

that is a great idea.. though the game is still an infant.. later in the game.. would be great.. more guild options would also be nice.. cant wait for guild h/q and guild v guild getting gound.. a guild bank would also be a nice thing..
and.. why not an explaination of where... our 20k goes when we start a guild ;D

i always just take the bit under a persons name as a marking they wear... it makes more sense that it be displayed than the person's name from IC context, but from ooc context, better to have both... I would like if people's ranks in the guild were reflected in their description or under the displayed name rather than having to '/who' them...for ic & ooc reasons...
even tho its on topic this is a bit divergent from everything said above: but my real desire is to have guilds automatically disbanded for indiscriminant invites. When i see people shout or say "anybody want a guild" or the like it undervalues guilds entirely.. or getting guild invites without being talked to at all before?--okay maybe don't punish the whole guild by disbanding it, maybe remove the member from the guild forcibly for a minimum time, or do the same as what is done to those who spam trade/challenge/other...I find it far more upsetting to have a stranger invite me to a guild out of nowhere --as in i will shun their whole guild for it-- thani am by random trade offers or even random duel challenges... Maybe this could be made a non-issue by flipping it around so a person needs to 'apply' to a guild rather than be 'invited'... i dunno..
-
As of yet I have not woren anything to mark me as a member of the Dark Empire. People just seem to guess. I mean my shirt would just be ruined with some big marking sewen in!
If people had to apply to a guild the guilds that want these members so bad will say 'Want to apply to my guild?' It will become more enticing to have a high member count than it already is as it will seem that all these people wanted to join the guild but the way they join will be very much the same.
-
Hmm well if you want to make guilds pay for recruiting members as was suggested in the wish list you could always make it so that the more member in the guild the higher the cost to add one.

@ krann
;D
the game is spose to mimike real life in some fashion.. and whats more real then some random guy throwing a paper in your face? come on.. "sigh this.." hehe.. having someone removed from a guild auto like would be.. well.a bad idea.. if you dont like what a guild MEMBER does. then talk to the LEADER... of said guild.. you dont see me hating a guild or.. since i am a guild leader (for now) delcaring war on a guild cuz i see a MEMBER of another guild botting or some such b/s. dont hate a guild cuz of one player... and also.. some guilds might be really good.. but have no means to get more in to thier guild.. so they ask random players ;) (not like thats what we do or nothing :sweatdrop: )

Why would a guild want more members if the quality of said members is always in question? How can a guild truely profess good leadership if people that have never even heard of it are being invited. I know of a particular incident where a player was in the game for a total of about fifteen seconds and was invited to join the guild*. It just served as a tag because they didn't role play. They weren't that fussed about helping him either.
*Some names have been changed to protect the guilty.

I have seen this idea mentioned before and I absolutely love it. Making the perspective member apply to a guild has the effect of at least putting a little bit of emphasis back on them to seek out and pick a guild that they like. The guild invite permission could be replaced with two permissions: 'View pending applications' and 'Approve/reject applications'. There would still be the shouts of "Anyone want to apply to my guild", but there is probably little that can be done about that with mechanics. This system would eliminate guild invite spamming completely tho.

@ parrallo
that happend to me.. ;D
but a ggod leader cant show it off, if he JUST made hiss guild.. (less 2hrs? 1day?) come on..

:whistling: erm to be honest, i tried reading everything but my attention span wanted me to write *blush*
oks about the being a member of multiple guilds (with or without full memebership benefits) i think is a realistic idea. i mean its kinda like having a badge you knows? showing your specialties and your loyalties. and from those "badges" (i suppose it could be anything, maybe thats what the whole colors things were about *shrug*) people know little bits about you..like your interests or family lineage or whatever
eheheh i think itd be a cool idea...might decrease on the whole "loyalty to your guild" theme thats usually prevalent, but when so many of us drop adn join guilds to find the right one...it shouldnt decrease too much :)

Colors is an ancient idea that has survived down to modern times. It started as a flag or banner that was a distinctive color. Like a wide ribbon attached to a pole that indicated who and where a particular leader was in medieval warfare, or the flag flown from the topmast of a sailing ship indicating which country and whose command it sailed under. It has been applied to biker gangs wearing their leathers with the gang name sewn onto the back.

not to mention alowing such easy targets to get picked off ;D
ANYWAY... we still need an ic way to identify guilds by sight :) i just brought up badges not cus i support it.. but cus thats what someone used for me and my guild :) but we could have a guild clothing line :woot:.. well no.. but like the guilds letters or w/e can be stampled into armor and such :)

:whistling:hmmm character descriptions are supposed to be ic right? like what yu can see or feel about the person.
when i was in the felecitious fenkis all the guild members put in their profile something similar to this "on her right chainmail arm lies a golden patch with the words Felecitious fenkis"
or something like that.
i dunnos, i thought it was ic. and its possible to do with what we have now.

Mainly see. You can't say your character strikes fear into the hearts of men. Or that it makes the perceiver crazed with lust. You can say it seems to be quite a rough guy. Or that it looks attractive.
As far as a guild tags are concerned, I think the current tagging system isn't too bad. Just as you have the name of the character on its head. We usually ask the name anyway. However one could know maybe because one heard someone mentioning the name a while ago.
Imposing crests and colors wouldn't be nice.
As far as being able to join multiple guilds, I couldn't agree more. It would improve our current guild system.
The Empire has its own way of dealing with both these issues though, as we have a way of permitting people to be in two imperial guilds at the same time, and we will get to use uniforms and marks.
Ah, there you go. Quality.
