Yliakum Warriors' League
NOTE: The period for new sign-ups has now expired, if you haven't signed-up... it's too late!!
As tournaments can be won (and lost) easily through luck, I wanted to find a better way to find out who Yliakum's most skilled dueler really is. (Along with who Yliakum's other strongest fighters are.)
In this competition, all competitors will fight all other competitors.
The number of wins and losses will determine each fighter's ranking.
The competition is free for everyone to enter.
The closing date for sign-ups will be the end of this month.
All fights must be completed by March 14th, any duels that are not complete by the end of February will be regarded as a draw.
PRIZES
Modified due to the economy crash!!!
1st place - A pair of SW Daggers (can be exchanged for swords if preferred)
2nd place - A pair of SW Short Swords
3rd place - SW Dagger
4th place - SW Short Sword
5th place - Iron Short Sword
MAIN RULES
1. No potions.
2. No magic.
3. There must be one other competitor about to witness the duel.
4 . Both competitors should agree on the impartiality of the witness or witnesses. (that they trust the witnesses to be fair and confirm the outcome of the fight honestly.)
5. Both competitors must agree (in front of any witnesses) that the fight they are about to have is their official YWL duel.
6. No use of bugs/glitches/exploits/etc and no weapons with quality above 300 (as it's considered a glitch)
7. The "jumping rule" applies. (After both sides have challenged, before anybody is allowed to attack.. you must BOTH jump at the beginning of the duel a few times. If you attack without waiting for your opponent to jump at the beginning... the duel will be invalid.)
8. In the event that two people fall within the top-5 and have the same number of points, there will be a duel to decide who takes which place.
ANY TIME, ANYWHERE RULES
These duels can take place at any location and at any time - but only if both competitors agree to a location. (If this is not possible, a die can be rolled to determine the location).
YWL MEETINGS
In addition to the "Any Time, Anywhere" rules, there will also be YWL meetings.
There's no obligation to attend as this is essentially just a casual meeting of YWL competitors to get a bunch of duels out the way in one go!!
Typically, this will be at 10pm GMT on Saturdays, for a few hours -- but can also happen any time when several competitors are online at once and wish to meet up for duels.
The location is going to be the biggest 'bone of contention' here and so I will be taking votes from competitors as to where they would like to hold these meetings (at least the regular Saturday ones). (RP-Politically-Correct: The Arena ...or... Convenient: The Death Realm ...or... anywhere else?) ---- The choice is yours.. and either way, you could stick to dueling "Any Time, Anywhere" if the venue causes you any issues.
LAGGING & PREPAREDNESS
>> If you are experiencing bad lag, do NOT fight and then complain about the lag.
(You can always have a warm-up fight to test lag out for both sides... remember... you both have to agree to the fight being official, you won't be forced to fight when conditions are bad for you... especially not when the server is choking!!)
>> Make sure you have fresh armor and the right weapons... If you come unprepared, you can't complain!!!
[For the sake of RP-correctness... a game-mechanics-death in this competition, should only be considered either yielding... or being injured beyond the point of continuing the fight. - So we may "beat" each other, but nobody is, in an RP sense, being killed. (Otherwise it wouldn't make sense us coming back to fight others) - just wanted to cover that before anyone complains!!]
The league table can be found here (http://theoutlaws.ath.cx/ywleague.asp).[/b] (though it's not very exciting as it's just a blank table ready for the competition!!)
-
I like that idea count me in.
-
scratch my name down Drah, I could do with a new silverweave, this ones a bit worn
-
well im in beware of my stat boosters and remmember die quickly :P.
-
Good to hear fightin' talk already!!
So far there are about 10 competitors including those posted in the thread so far... and there are about another 10 people I haven't spoken to yet that I'm sure will be up for it.
I'll post updates in the next day or two after I've given more people a chance to express their interest in taking part. :)
-
Yeah remember to put me down, need to get some practice in before i go against any of the biggies though :-\
-
Sounds good Drah, put my name down :D
-
I'm all in for it. Please add me to the competitiors list.
But how to make sure, your opponent doesn't use self-crafted weapons above 300/300? Wouldn't we need a GM for that? :detective:
PS: the jumping rule doesn't seem to be that popular, huh? ::|
-
A great idea Drah, good luck with it. :)
-
Nefert stretches her claws..." Count me in Drah"... she then laughs..."There are a few faces that I will have great pleasure in killing"
-
It sounds too good to miss, count me in.
-
No way am i dueling, if the jump rule isn't implemented.
Then it comes down to who gets challenge, if they challenge me, i just accept, lunge at them, and i win.
IF i challenge them, they accept, and lunge at me.
So for now i'm out, if you want it to be more about skills, and less about luck, implement the jump rule.

It sounds too good to miss, count me in.
you need to fix your lag then :/ too much about luck when I'm duelling you :/
I'm not going to join though, as it's not for Peacers character to duel in tournaments :).
-
DaTruth .. Please re-read the "updates" section, specifically regarding the jumping rule. ;)

Sign Jangeol up

DaTruth .. Please re-read the "updates" section, specifically regarding the jumping rule. ;)
Thanks Drah, you can sign me up too if you like.
One catch though, make sure the jumping rule states, your opponent must also jump, before you can attack.
As of now, it just says, you jump a few times before you attack, someone could easily mistake that as, accept, jump, attack.
Without actually waiting for their opponents jump.

@DaTruth
No problem... Done!!
One question... Are you going to be competing as Restound or another char?
-
I'll be competing as Gharin, Drah, incase you wondered.
-
^^ Cool... I assumed you would be (already in the league table!!)
Glad you could make it Gharin. :)

@DaTruth

One question... Are you going to be competing as Restound or another char?
Yep, Restound ofcourse
-
Great!
Count me in as well

Just a quick note on how the league table will work:
The league table is interactive and has been designed so that the YWL can manage their own results.
(NOTE: I'm still developing it... it won't be fully functional for a day or two and yeah... it's ugly and dull right now!!)
Each competitor will be given a 4-digit code and can submit results for any fight (either as a competitor or as one of the witnesses).
Each result submitted is timestamped and the name must match the 4-digit code entered.
The league table will then (when I've finished coding!!) display either the name of the winner, "DRAW" or "DISPUTE".
You aren't obliged to deal with this system though... it's just there to help make this competition easier to manage and to allow competitors to provide updates directly if they want to.
If you just wish to report the results to someone in-game... there will be a few contacts who will do this for you!! (I'll post more details soon)
...and this is why I chose the 'impartial witness' system... because it means we can all fight.. and report the results... any time we choose.
@Arerano .. excellent!!... you've been added. :)
-
Chance of wining any of the duals 0.00000001% :-\
Yah what the hell! but plz go eazy on me :surrender:
-
The more the merrier :)
and Marqsaynt and Rell have been added too. (Rell doesn't know yet but most people reckon he'll be up for it)
As we now (at time of posting this) have over 20 duelers and the system for managing it all is pretty much in place.. we may bring the start date for the competition forward... I'll keep you posted!!
-
Put down Rinha Rabat for your competition please Drah.
-
Drah: nice table.
but there's a bug in my oppinion:
the "greyed-out" boxes should be diagonal only.
the sense of them of course is that none is able to fight against himself.
at the moment the "greyed-out"-fields aren't just a diagonal line but build a triangle which eg forbids to enter results like:
Arerano:Alliva
btw Zwenze isn't able to enter any results at all.
The "greyed-out"-fields should only be at: Ahodogie:Ahodogie, Alliva:Alliva, etc.
Greetings
Arerano
-
Hi Arerano...
There is a box for Alliva vs Arerano (just not the other way round).
The boxes in the bottom left are greyed out because there is only one fight per pairing.
As opposed to some sports league tables where 'home' and 'away' games are played.
( I had originally started with just the diagonal line shaded but then realized it'd mean a slot for Alliva vs Arerano as well as one for Arerano vs Alliva. )
Hope that makes sense?
-
Ahh, i see ;) you're right of course.
probably a 'thinking-mistake' of me,.
-
Nice work on the table Drah, I can see already you have some classy fighters signed up, I think a liitle more practice is on order if I want to play with the big boys....oh sorry and girls.
-

If you need practice Blayze then we all do. :P

*tanner takes up a spade and begains to dig a grave for him self*

The Competition Has Started
The competition has been brought forward to today to allow us a few more days to fit in all the fighting. (Sign-ups will still be accepted for the next 5 days.)
The League Table / Reporting Results
The league table system will allow you, your competitor and any witnesses (who are also competitors) to enter the results of each match. The information needed is: Who fought, who won, who witnessed.
(For your access-code to the league table system - contact me in-game.)
Alternatively, I can report the details for you... just send me a /tell with the details... (or keep a note of them and /tell me when I'm next online.)
NOTE: To help reduce problems, whenever you are a witness... Please keep a note of the results of the fights you witness. --- I ask this, as any conflicting reports on the league table will need to be double-checked with the witnesses and conflicts could go unreported until the end of the competition.
Good luck to everyone.
At least 30 of 465 fights have been fought. (6.4% complete)
For full details see the LEAGUE TABLE (http://theoutlaws.ath.cx/ywleague.asp)
...and now .. on to the fighting talk, disputes and arguments... :whistling:
-
Yea aight, count me in ;D
-
Drah can you sign-up Sallorile Senayila please.
-
what happened to me i signed up when you first started it !!
:@#\

::|
-
It's still going Chaz and i'm sure Drah will sign you back up, I had you took off sorry, You have to verse every opponent and i didn't think you had time anymore, I'm sure Drah will re-add you :]
-
I just want to commend Drah on his forward thinking. This type of thought and effort put into a player run event, especially one like this that is ever continuing, is exactly the type of thing that makes me love PS. And it is the type of thing that makes me keep playing it. Good job Drah, keep it up. We all need to think and push the bounds of what we can do with the present system around us, and you have definately set a great example here.
-
@Silvaur (and others who've posted before) ... thanks for all the positive comments.
@Chazarus... I'll add you back now... and Gharin's right... it's all his fault ;)

Count Anine Sizzlechest in. :woot:

Volund / Sallorile Disputed Match - Official Decision
NOTE: To avoid this in future, please make sure you have both given a clear indication in group-chat (or where ever it can be witnessed) that the fight you are about to have is the official one. There was no clear agreement between both parties in this dispute immediately prior to the fight, which has of course complicated the issues leading to my decision.
Okay, it was an awkward decision but I've made it anyway:
It was certainly implied to Sallorile by Volund that Volund was wanting only official matches (to save on degrading his weapon quality) ("no rematches", etc.) ... and it appeared Volund was refusing to fight Sallorile unless it was the official fight... even to the point he asked in group if anyone was up for an official duel instead of fighting Sallorile.
They then had the fight.
Immediately after this, Sallorile stated "i have officaly dueled you in the YWL"... and Volund responded "and you lost".
With this being a dispute... AND because there are no witnesses to it directly [and because I didn't see it stated CLEARLY that it was the official duel they were about to have... I have decided:
To Volund & Sallorile:
You can fight two duels in addition to the one already fought... and make it best of 3.
That means, Sallorile, that you will need to beat Volund twice in a row, to take the win. I know it's hard work for you, but from the chat-log it appears you admitted to officially fighting Volund.
If these two matches aren't fought, the win will be given to Volund based on the evidence in the group-chat log.
That is my decision, it's the official decision, I hope you find it fair.
(and I checked to see if Sallorile may have said about the official duel in response to someone else... but there's no evidence of that!!!)
(01:40:52)
(01:41:51) Volund tells group: there are no rematches, I want to duel everyone else
(01:42:04) Sallorile tells group: who says this is a rematch
(01:42:16) Volund tells group: I still aint wasting my quality
(01:42:31) Sallorile tells group: cause you cant afford it
(01:43:08) Volund tells group: I have 7 SW ss
(01:43:19) Volund tells group: and 1 million 3 hundred thousand
(01:43:30) Volund tells group: I can, but dont want to bro
(01:43:31) Sallorile tells group: lol noi wounder i lost i still have my ruined dagger and weapon repir kit on
(01:43:46) Volund tells group: You had 2 daggers on
(01:44:03) Volund tells group: and you didnt get a hit on me so doesnt really matter
(01:44:37) Sallorile tells group: are you scared you will loose to me?
(01:44:43) Volund tells group: taunting wont work
(01:44:46) Sallorile tells group: then why wont you duel
(01:45:03) Sallorile tells group: its not like you will loose anything if you die or win?
(01:45:08) Volund tells group: No
(01:45:59) Volund tells group: anyone comin to DR for officla match duel
--- the fight takes place here ---
(01:46:16) Sallorile tells group: i have officaly dueled you in the YWL
(01:47:59) Volund tells group: and you lost
(01:48:16) Sallorile tells group: cebot you want your ruined dagger back?
(01:48:18) Volund tells group: Now I need to duel cebot and ecuetas for now
(01:48:35) Sallorile tells group: that wasnt an offical duel you hadnt mentioned it yet
-
Seems fair to me Drah, oh and btw I have a few results for you i'll PM them now.

After much pondering Trymm decides to enter the big league. As time is running out, and he is not sure when he will run into Drah, he decides to pin a note to the Hydlaa message board below the official announcement -- hoping that Drah comes by to notice it before the deadline.
"...
I hope it is not too late to enter the tournament. Looking at the list of registered participants, I realize that the league might still be too big for me. However, I would consider it an honor just to be part of the event.
-Trymm Vassfare
..."
-
Yup.. just in time...
36 hours remaining for sign-ups.
-
it a great event and i love duelling ;)
so guys count me in :D
-
Alecin adds his name to the list of Warriors.
He hopes to win at least one duel.
Alecin Fenerie
-
Both of you have been added (as you hopefully know by now!!).
------------------
No more sign-ups!!! - Sign-up period has now passed.
28 days remaining to complete duels.
------------------
@Rongar... (re: your post below) - That result has now been added to the league table.
-
Hey Drah,
sorry to use a post here to point that out, but I lost an official one against Ahodigie, already 2 days ago and it hasnt been updated on the table yet. But because I dont want Ahodigie or anyone else to think, that I "lost memory" about this fight, I wanted to make things clear as soon as possible now.
Thanks in advance,
Rongar

League Table Clean-Up
Any competitors with less than 5 duels by February 26th (well over the half-way point) will be disqualified from the league..
This is for several practical reasons... (To block potential conspiracy to distort scores and to make the 'clean-up' in the last week of the league more manageable.)
This effects the following 14 competitors:
Alliva, Anine, Arunis, Bikrof, Cahngui, Cilay, Chazarus, Gankro, Narure, Nefert, Restound, Sissarliss, Tanner, Zwenze.
Xylaal has left the competition voluntarily.
We're Effected By A Wipe!!!
(Related thread is here (http://hydlaa.com/smf/index.php?topic=27383.0).)
Prizes will be changed to items due to the 'economy crash'... see first post in thread for more details.
Unless the GMs want to help fund the competition of course ;)
My Absence
I will be absent for a few days this month.
In my absence (if absent for more than 24 hours), when a decision is required in a dispute (or anything else that would have been solely down to my decision), Gharin will take my place and make the decision for me.
Although there are many of you who I trust.. I've based this decision on his additional experience with running competitions.
The following people have all submitted results to the league table before and may also be able to help if they're around:
Arerano, Cebot, Epyrion, Gharin, Marqsaynt, Segacy, Symasta
Scoring / Ranking / Etc
Also a note on the scores... the scores I last posted were "percentage-of-games-fought-that-were-won", they were not an overall percentage in the competition. (If we did it this way, you could win one fight and be 'unavailable' for all the rest to secure the 1st place!!! - which would be insane)
If you want to see the score table (below the leage table).. visit THIS (http://theoutlaws.ath.cx/ywleague.asp?report=true) link instead.
-
Apologies for bumping the thread but it's relevant to the update and the thread was starting to get buried.
Due to the following PVP changes in 0.3.018:
- We can no longer attack PCs behind or to the side of us.
- The attacks auto-repeat as if fighting an NPC.
- New stat trainers mean some players are considerably stronger than others so the balance of competitor-strength is not what it was a few days ago.
The deadlines for the YWL will be extended by at least 14 days to allow for training and to give the devs time to resolve the PVP issues.
-
I'd like to withdraw please Drah the new system is too random for me, I mean there is literally no player skill involved it's just hit the button and move at 'em. I'm not trying to put peoples hard work down but the system seems to have taken a few steps back rather than forward.
I'll just stick to RPing for now til it gets some changes ;)
-
I couldnt agree more with you Gharan. The new combat system has nothing to do with your duel-skill anymore. Its all about luck, and if it doesnt get changed, I will retire from the YWL and from duels in general. The new system gives duel-begiiners the chance on winning against a professional/experienced dueler. I could live with the new "face your enemy if you want to hit" rule, but that you dont jump out of stance automatically anymore, means the end to our beloved hit&run duels. I dont know, why this way of dueling was an "unfun way" in the opinion of the devs. It was trainable and the most used way of dueling in Yliakum.
-
rongar what you talking about it dosent stop hit and run if your really botherd then have a button to stop your attack when it fails and if you dont stop it itsd actualy better cause it keeps timeing the 2 seconds for you also with this new system should stop the attack spammers the ones that hit it constantly and really do win by pure luck.
-
It doesnt stop the attack spammers, because if you add a short cut /stopattack, you change stance every time afterwards. AND: If your opponent stays in stance from the beginning on, you cant evaluate anymore, when his timing/delay will run out, because you dont see him changing into stance anymore. His delay runs out constantly and repeats and repeats. This means, that luck will decide, when you have chosen to get close to him, if you happen to run into his hit or not, because you dont know, when he will hit. Before the update, you saw your opponent changing stance, and knew what to do. That is not possible anymore, if your opponent stays in stance the whole time. It is great, that you dont get pushed and pulled anymore now, and i also appreciate, that you have to be facing your opponent, in order to hit. But this doesnt weigh up the factor of luck, that has been added to the new duel system, after the update.
-
Now taking votes:
- Scrap event completely?
- Suspend event until PVP is changed?
- Continue Anyway?
Vote HERE (http://www.theoutlaws.ath.cx/polls2/latest.asp)
-
I'd like to change my vote to "continue anyway" but how about the idea of a one week break to allow people to get used to the new system. I only had a few duels so I haven't even truly tested it out yet. And hell with all the bugs gone we may call it better in a week. ;D
So I suggest a one week break Drah but that's just my thoughts. :)
-
Good to hear Gharin.
After having a few duels with Felinius, Rongar and Dazx... I've come to the conclusion that we can still do timed attacks... though I also won a few rounds auto-attacking, standing-still in an alcove with SW daggers... which was thoroughly disappointing (but I'll say no more than that on the subject)
Although the League isn't suspended... I don't think anyone is going to want to duel unless they have some more time to practice with the new system... for that reason I'm extending the competition deadlines and will set a new deadline soon.
I'm going to hold off on setting any dates until things settle down though, because right now, it's hard to predict what tomorrow will bring!!
To all YWL competitors:
Please try to train up with the new combat system. If you miss the old dueling style... the best advice I can give right now is to introduce the use of a "/stopattack" shortcut along with your normal attack shortcut so that you can re-establish timed-attacks, tactics, etc. - Try to practice with this, it seems to get a bit closer to how things were before (once you get used to it!)
-
rofl dosent make much differance to me for some reason for a long time in pvp i havent seen changeing to attack so you know also i usualy time ppl when im faceing them not at the side of them ect so i dont have many probs with that either.
-
Drah if this event is still going on go ahead and remove me. I tried dueling with the new system but it is pointless for me. I'm lucky to win one duel in 5 against people weaker than me(due to lag i guess) Rell is officially retired.
It's was fun while it lasted.
-
I haven't removed anyone from the league table yet but will do so this weekend.
It's entirely up to competitors what they wish to do from here onwards and I will still be finishing the competition (around the 10th of March), calculating ranks, giving out prizes, etc.
As I can now stand in an alcove, back against a wall, randomly slashing away with my SW daggers, put the kettle on and come back to find I've won a duel against a skilled duelist... (nonsense tactic IC... lame tactic OOC)
This will probably be my last PvP competition.
To much time and effort has been wasted on this one.. and despite my best efforts, we've lost competitors and morale!! >:(
-
First and foremost Drah I want to congratulate you on such a well orgainised competition, it's a shame that it's been ruined by the new pvp system if you like we can both back in to opposite corners and you can make two coffees, I for one would be prepared to finish off any fights that I have outstanding ( Blayze sits back and flips a coin to decide the winner). once again nice work
-
Effective and interesting roleplaying is becoming more and more limited to just /me , /my and other chat commands in Planeshift due to its faulty pre-alpha gameplay, specially on combat and quests(But this is a pre-alpha stage of them, obviously)
I guess joining all the RPers in an Yahoo Messenger room would have the same effect. Or perhaps a forums-based RP game.
A sad fact, that hopefully will change on a greater mark like version 0.5 or the very distant version 1.0
-
I agree with Blayze, great job on organization and managing the competition. I hope that if the pvp ever again ends up acceptable to most people that you would be willing to come out of retirement to run another competition.
-
A few people have told me they wish to drop out Drah here is the list:
Xylaal
Anine
Chazarus
Gharin
Socia

Well, 2 days to go.
The YWL fell apart at the seams after a few lil' tweaks to the combat system.
So, the majority of people were put off continuing.
As a result, rankings based on overall games won will be grossly unfair.
------
At the end of the competition, everyone (including those who left), will be assigned a point score based on the number of games they have won.
Anyone defeating that person will then be given that point score.
For instance, I've won 16 fights... anyone who had beaten me will be given 16 points.
This, to some degree, helps add 'weight' to calculations for average scores and should make scoring fairer.
I'm going to release the scores and tables in a number of formats but ultimately, I will have to judge who came where overall. ( I won't include myself in ranking for prizes though )
------
I can only offer my apologies to those who invested a lot of time and effort into the competition intitially and wish to thank those of you who took time out to help with entering scores, etc. I've certainly got faith in the community and have made a few friends from ths competition. (mostly OOC but a few IC... and the OOC relationships can be used in future for organising roleplay events, etc.)
So, sorry it was a bit of balls-up, and thank you for your efforts, your perserverence and interest.
Maybe we'll try again sometime... but next time, I'll be checking with the devs to see if they plan to make any fundamental changes to pvp combat.
To Zanzibar and others who've been againt the old combat system and "putting dueling on a pedestal"... I'm sorry you've felt that way and I'm sure you cringed at the sight of this thread... probably seeing it as devaluing PS in terms of RP. --- Well, it was never meant to devalue anything, it was just meant to be competitive and fun... and that was the whole point of the competition... I noticed people regularly meeting up for duel practice in DR and figured we could do something fun with that crowd... that was all. (No intent to 'destroy the game' or anything!)
NOTE: I'm not looking for an argument or debate over the merits of it.. I'm just stating our only intent was to have a bit of fun.. nothing more, nothing less.
And Karuu, Vengeance, devs, gm's.. please know it was NEVER about button-bashing and using lag for those of us in the YWL.. (button bashing caused push-back bug... which was typically a drawback in a duel -- We also avoided duels when the server was laggy.. with some dueling in different areas to reduce lag for all involved.)
Dueling was more about using the 2 second delay from starting an attack.. to striking (if using swords)... and being able to judge other peoples movements based on their stance change so you could see when they were likely to come in for a hit. -- It did rely on player-skill, but not in any more of an excessive way than the existance of groffeltoe seems to suggest is acceptable!!
That said... I do welcome a new combat system.. as long as it one where the player can still give guidance and have inputus in tactics... I know we should be more dependant on the character-skill but let's not make dueling a passive, dull experience essentially based on nothing more than stats and die rolls. --- As that's not fun, unique or interesting.
Anyway, I don't want to deviate too much!!... (and I personally have got used to the changes... I just don't want it to devolve into something where players have no control or guidance over their char.)
---
Back on topic...
Scores and ranks will be posted in the next 5-10 days.
Thanks.. and congrats to Tungor.. He's already got first place 'in the bag'. ;)
Peace!!

It was a good effort Drah. Well done. I had my own reasons for not completing more duels than I did -- they were not really related to the new dueling system, but had more to do with the fact that I have not had more time to spare lately.
I enjoyed the excitement and tension of fighting an "official duel". My records show that I did not do too well under this pressure. However, that does not mean I did not have fun. If there is a new duelling competition, I will be there also for that ... Until then ... ;D
