Title: constant disconnects
Post by: anth on January 17, 2007, 11:14:05 am
probably a real simple problem, cant seem to find a solution in the forums tho, but knowing my luck iv probably looked over it a dozen times. Any what the problem is i am crashing/dissconnecting after only a few minutes of play, I as both as after i get dissconnected i recive the following message:
 ______________________________________________________
/ Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library                                    X  \
|---------------------------------------------------------------------------|
|   Runtime Error!                                                                      |

iv no idea what this problem is relating to other some scipting error as that is what C++ usually is, so basicly i have no idea how to approch this problem. I have tried the following:
- opening ports on fire wall
- disabling fire wall
- adjusting graphic settings
- and mabye somthing else i cant remember
(on a side note it has been ages since i last played, but i have updated as far as the updater will let me, but i did do a freash download of the game and a update after that as well)

Computer specs:

OS: XP, SP2
HDD speed: 7200rpm (side note: client is communicating with the processer at a rate of 480Mega Bits p/s)
Ram: 1024
Virtual Memory: 2048
Processor: 1.7ghz
Graphics: GeForce MX 440 with AGP 8X (Intergrated RAMDAC) (up to date drivers)

well, this should be all the information needed, the client did not create any error reports or file dumps, so i cant help you out there...

oh, almost forgot, thanks for any and all help.

hmmmmmmm....

Well, for starters, the error box you see upon it exiting isn't related to the actual crashing f the game itself.  That is always there, even if you'd exit the game properly.  It's something that has been around for a long long time, and it just hasn't been fixed iyet.  A side note, I've read that it may indeed be fixed with the next client release, so maybe.....

Anyways, on to figuring out what's causing it to crash....

Looking at your hardware, you seem fine, but the geforce, well, it's a bit old.  I'll assume it has 128 meg of its own ram?  as in, ram on the card, not shared with the mobo?

perhaps the current settings you're trying to run the gam at is just overloading the card.  Try opening the pssetup.exe program up and sreduce the settings down a bit and see if that helps.  try turning the vertex buffer on/off for one.

another possible cuase is where you are at in the world.  I believe poeple are having a problem with the bronze doors region.  It's possible that your character will need to be moved by a gm.  we'll need your character's name for that.  another option is if you haven't already tried it, look here and see if that helps: http://hydlaa.com/smf/index.php?topic=27003.0

Last thing I can think of for now.  Is it giving you any type of error asking if you want to create a dump file upon crash?  If so, look here to see if its known, and if not follow the instructions to send it off to ary so she can look at tthe dump fles: http://hydlaa.com/smf/index.php?topic=26465.0

well i know that the graphics card is not overheating, it is only 64mb, but i have over a gig in virtual memory, but i doubt that would help any way. I do not know if the graphics card is being shared with mobo, and to tell the trurth iv no real idea what mobo is, jsut goes to prive how long iv been gone, ( since about mid 2006 iv been gone), currently iv created a new character so im in the hydlaa plaza.

No, im not getting any option to recored a log, or a dump a recored or anything of the type. really the biggest problem is that i am loosing contact with the server after about 30s, to about 4 min after logging in, even during the character creation i was being dissconnected, i finnaly ended up just doing one of the quick choses for it. so basicly looks like were still lost on this then, or as i said it may be a very simple solution...

mabye its just a port or two im not opening, was there any ports i need to open for?
i really cant remember, or this were to look for that info, i lost all of that when i had to reinstall my OS, but that has nothing to do with it the problem any way.

I can confirm that it's indeed fully fixed ;)

@anth:
Also try turning VBO on/off in pssetup. Some crashes might be related to magic.
I have a geforce 4 mx too on my old pc and it does not share memory with RAM.

mobo is just my short term for motherboard.

When I said "perhaps the current settings you're trying to run the game at is just overloading the card.  Try opening the pssetup.exe program up and sreduce the settings down a bit and see if that helps.  try turning the vertex buffer on/off for one."

I meant that perhaps with the settings you are currently running it at, are too high for the card, so the game is asking the card to process more than it can handle at once, thus it crashes.  Not really a heat related issue, just a lack of processing resources on the card.  Which is why I suggested turning the settings down to see if that helps.

But from your last post, is doesn't sound like its the game crashing, more so, its the game closing when it looses a connection to the server.

Can you run a ping command to the laanx server for say a few minutes and see what your packet loss is?  It could be that you have an unstable connection.  If you are running a wireless connection, trying moving closer to the access point for a stronger signal and see if that helps.

ok, i pinged the server for a total of 160 packets, 2 of them timed out.
and the graphics card is not being shared with the mother bored
