Title: Dark Map... again.
Post by: Xirr on January 17, 2007, 04:20:41 pm
I've had this problem for a long time now, and was cool with it. the problem is that now i am into crafting and is very difficult to get to ore deposits when you can't see the ground.

The ground near camera turns pitch black while the lighting in the far away hills is normal. I say camera because if the camera is zoomed all the way out from the avatar i can almost see the texture of the ground he is in, if camera is in first person mode its impossible to see if he is in the edge of a cliff or walking in a road. The textures of rocks and trees get proper lighting. The -fullbright trigger makes the hills in the horizon brighter but doesn't afect the ground near camera. When i choose relight map in the pssettup prog it just freezes in "loading map".
This only happens in the two wilderness maps between hydlaa and Ojaveda and between the Magic Shop and Bronze Doors.

This capture was taken in a:
Acer Travelmate 4150
Pentium M 1.7GHz
Intel Mobile 915 GM

How can I solve this? I'm willing even to "hack" the ofending textures off my client!

Edit: I read that there is a tool from crystal space that can relight maps manualy. Can you help me to what tools is that and what are the names of the wilderness maps?

To use the relight tool, simply right-click on your PS shortcut, and in the target line add -relight, with a space between it and the text already there. Before doing this make sure that you're logged off in the map you want to brighten, and when you start PS again it's going to take a very long time to load (can be up to an hour, if not more). If the issue is fixed, remember to take -relight out of the shortcut :]

Ohh an hour! I was quiting after 15 minutes thinking it had crashed. :-[.
Thank you karyuu.

Unfortunately after 4 relights i can say that that doesn't solve the problem.  :(

In your case I'd try to play full screen. That solves quite a lot of issues with video drivers settings in conjunction to the desktop and the game. Does even cut back the memory footprint needed for all of it. Use the standalone setup utility to set that.

Elvicat: Changing gama doesn't work, f you look closely in the screeshot the rocks re already too bright. Only thing that gets dark is the grounds in that particular 3 maps. All other textures have perfect lighting. It must be a mesh thing...

Andoryn: thanks for the tip. Wil use fullscren 32 bits in my tests for now on.

Ok, made another relight in fullscren, didn't work.
Time do start fiddling with Config files... :devil:
Any idea in what part of config file the lighting can be tweaked?
I'm starting by this part:

;file->psclient.cfg
; ******************
; * Part 2: Config *
; ******************

VFS.Config = vfs.cfg

Engine.Lighting.Ambient.White = 30
Engine.Lighting.Ambient.Red = 0
Engine.Lighting.Ambient.Green = 0
Engine.Lighting.Ambient.Blue = 0

Engine.Lighting.LightmapSize = 16
Engine.Lighting.Reflections = 2
Engine.Lighting.CosinusFactor = 0
Engine.Lighting.Radiosity = no
Engine.Lighting.SpriteQuality = 1

Engine.Lighting.Radiosity.Enable = no
Engine.Lighting.Radiosity.DoStaticSpecular = no
Engine.Lighting.Radiosity.StaticSpecularAmount = 0.70
Engine.Lighting.Radiosity.StaticSpecularTightness = 4
Engine.Lighting.Radiosity.ColourBleed = 1.0
Engine.Lighting.Radiosity.StopPriority = 0.1
Engine.Lighting.Radiosity.StopImprovement = 100.0
Engine.Lighting.Radiosity.StopIterations = 10000
Engine.Lighting.Radiosity.SourcePatchSize = 16

Did you ever fix this issue? I'm having the same problem. I looked at your screenshot...very similar to mine. I can see people a little bit, but only the sky and rocks are illuminated, otherwise. My screen settings are at their brightest.  :( I can't even find my way to Hydlaa. As a Newb Fenki, it's not kewl.

Jammeez, have you tried using -relight? Always helps to mention if you have tried the suggestions offered in a help thread.

Sorry, yes. I tried the above-mentioned fixes. I finally had to have a player lead me all the way to Hydlaa. Thanks again, Felinius. ;)

I can see fine in town(s), but when I get off the proximal path (after the map section loads), I can see little but sky and characters. I can see creatures, trees and rocks, but all other is completely black. I can sort of tell when there's a hilll, and I can see paths in the distance, if there are any.

As soon as we came to the foggy "river" at midpoint, I could see again. But after midpoint, all went black.

Now I'm in Hydlaa, and all is jolly! \\o// Hopefully I can find my way back. :P

Jameez:
Didn't solved it fully. But after +0.3 gamma corrections on my videoboard settings, blind changes in the config files() and some relights it's better.

although the screen capture doens't show it. (http://www.flickr.com/photos/56062544@N00/361415164/)

 The downside is that now the outside paint in the magic shop is pitch black and the overal graphics in the maps that were good are now "cartoony" and too luminous.

I guess that in other peoples' computers the chars have a light radious around the camera and in my case somehow there is a shadow radious.

Well, I've decided that my character, Tabbey Garola, a.k.a. Tabbey the Half-Blind, is simply waiting for a miracle to save her eyesight. I can get around in town, and if I have too much trouble, I can find someone to lead me. I found a friend to lead me out of the underworld after I died. That was an adventure. I died about 5 times before I made it out. It seems the most perilous places just happen to be the ones where I'm the most blind.

Anyway, having fun. And everyone is so nice, Thanks. :woot:
