Title: Mentak's 3D Wares
Post by: Mentak on January 21, 2007, 06:07:31 am
Well, I finally got back into this game. I've been with it sense 2005... ish. Some of you may remember me.

Here is my submission, and there are more to come.

I use anim8or to model and render. It can also create movies. Well, I'm using this over Blender, because Blender is too complicated for me.

Hey,

Looks nice. It's good to see more 3d art around. I especially like that you've taken the time to UV-map your mesh, not everyone can do that.

Tips:
 - I'd lose some roundness on the handle in favour of lesser face count.
 - Some shading and highlights could be drawn into the texture, especially in the blade, to gain more realistic metal look. Can use real world blades as a reference.

Greets,
 - Cherppow

Try using a square for the hilt of the blade, a sword in a game low poly wise isnt going to even notice the hande and squareness.  This will reduce the face count decently. Very decently in fact.

On another note i would keep practicing texturing, thse look very "paint" done, and as 1337 as paint is it doesnt do wonders for the sword. There are a few texturing programs out there i think you can download. You can also use referance pictures, like a picture of a sword and drag the UV map of the blades over te picture of the blades. Lucky me i did work experiance in a graphics design company so I got photoshop 7, quark xpress and somthing else i think, to use if i want to make my textures. Usually i just use phtoshop now, useing some of the filters on there is brilliant :) If i was a pro my textures would be a hell of alot better. But woe is me. I am no pro.

Well first of all. I use photoshop. I'm a wizard at photoshop and effects, however I suck with making textures. So does anyone have a tutorial page or something?

*edit*

Alright, here is another model. It's a butcher knife. And I put the blood on it to give it some character. I'm starting to get better at this UV thing :).

You can use this ingame either to cook or to fight :).

If your going to spend the time to model/texture why not take the time to explore yourself creatively. IUn other words, you dont acomplish much spending a total of 40 minutes making a plain and unoriginal little sword. why not spend three hours making something unique out of it and making it look great at the same time. Its cool that your modeling, but why not challenge yourself and try to grow as an artist if your going to take the time to do it.

Alright, well. That last model, The Butcherknife was just to practice my uv rays. I have put ALOT more effort into it than the sword. And I realize that. I will be working on a low poly staff (stick). And it the modeling time will be longer because I will be as creative as I can. This will be my first real project. I will also work on the UV rays, and try to implement shadows. I will update regularly with improvements,  so stay posted and besure to post any suggestions :).

Dont rush Gentar. Dont rush. All goood things come with time.
:P

As for the Cleaver, I like the texture on the handle, very nice.
The knife itself looks like somthing you'd find in a zombie game.

I agree, the grains on the wooden handle came out nicely, and I like the little cross running out of the knot on the side (whatever you call that... I was never any good at Woodwork Theory...)

The blood isn't very realistic though - it's far too bright and real blood would spatter and spray more than the general smudges you have...

But that's just my nitpickiness...
