Well, be sure I tried to find out, but searching for information about a wipe is not easy ... I got many results but none of them answered the question that is burning in my head.
For the first time in my short playing time on PS I today, was forced to think about what it means if a wipe happens.
I read about money-wipes, item-wipes and so on ...
I'd have no problem with loosing my stats, my money, my items !
I wouldn't complain ...
But what I'm really scared of is loosing my name ...
The name Tolol was born about 15 years ago when I for the first time in my life entered an INternet-Chatroom and from that day on I used it in many chat-rooms, forums, online games ... etc ... etc ... nearly all around the internet I was known as "Tolol".
I am sure you can imagine how happy I was when I found out that I could register "my" Tolol on PS.
What will happen when the "big" wipe comes and even character names are wiped ?
What if a Jerk thinks he would like to be called Tolol and registers the name before I can do ?
Do I have somekind of a claim on my name ?
Would be nice if anyone could take this fear out of my head.
Thank you
Tolol

Important: All Characters Will Be Wiped in the Near Future (http://hydlaa.com/smf/index.php?topic=14529.0)
If there are any (nontechnical) problems with the character creation process, please contact a Game Master, explaining the situation, and they will do all they can to help you. (i.e The name of your character has been taken by somebody else, your guild has been created by someone else... etc.)
-
We've had wipes where we lost our stats and our inventories. We also had a wipe where EVERYTHING was lost, including all our characters and guilds. It just depends.
There were a few individuals who stole character names and guild names after the full wipe. Game Masters stepped in and returned the monikers to their original owners.
-
Well, Thank you ...
This sounds like I shouldn't be afraid of a wipe ...
Thanks
-
Err, I haven't played in a while, so this is confusing me. Was there a wipe recently or something?

Ah, so the wipe hasn't actually happened at all yet, that's good. I just wanted to make sure my character was still safe for the time being, because I'd hate to lose him (I've had him since '03 ;D). I recently formatted and don't have the game, nor do I have the means to download it just yet either, so I'm glad all is well for now!

idk.. new name = new chance to rp. prevents persons from taking ooc matters and turning them ic matters.. know what i mean? of course you dont.. ANYWAY.. i dont plan on keep this name if a full reset comes along... JUST to tell you ;)

<TJPM=full>Hmm, I think I know what you are talking about. I routinely screw people over, then create new characters and pretend to be someone new. It's quite a laugh to "befriend" the same morons once more, then hear them whine to you about what you did to them just a few days ago! Can't really get enough of that! Oftentimes they fall for the same trick again and again! Well, their fault, after all, people can be expected to learn, no?<TJPM=off>
BTW, "TJPM" is "Total Jerk Pretense Mode".
Regarding the OT, I don't really get the idea of using the same name for every game that I play. After all, you're playing someone, no, something else every time, anyway. With "Tolol" this doesn't really matter (even though, to me, it sounds like "to lol"), as it's pretty generic. Still, it would feel wrong (to me) to RP a medieval char and use the same name for an FPS. Your choice, obviously, and I do acknowledge the desire to keep a name once it was established in PS (as long as it is acceptable, that is). Anyway, as has been said, inappropriately taken names will be handed back to the original bearer (which, overall, worked surprisingly well last time, mabye because people seem to be more keen to not keep their name?), so I don't see reason to worry about that.
-
Seytra, Seytra, Seytra... when will you learn that most people don't use alts to cause trouble?
-
They don't?
Most people don't use alts to often. Not really that sure that most of the people who use them a lot don't misuse it sometimes aswell. Can't count the number of guildspies I have captured with several guilds where it was obvious if not proven that it was an alt :P
-
Hmm. I only knew of one spy in the DE who was causing problems, Serem. My god that guy was a jerk.

sounds like "to lol" ... "pretty generic" ?
Well, go on and I think I will soon dislike my once loved name ... the name I carried through my internet-lfe .....
btw. I have never and I think I will never play FPSs ...
/edit
... this may sound a bit fussy and nitpicking ... but, sorry, I like the Name ...
-
It's hard to come up with a truly ingenius name with multiple layers of ambiguity that hasn't been taken by someone else...
But Barty's right... people DO seem to make decisions about IG characters based on their impressions of the player behind them. Especially when the character has the same name as their forum profiles.

Based on my understanding of events, "rushed" is definitely not the right term. "Crawled in at a snails pace after first announcing the route they were going to use" is far more like it.
Sometimes when you're bent over holding your ankles just asking for a kick in the tail, there is a guy there all to happy to do it. This was one of those times.
-
It's not nice to rub the dev's faces in it, Val :P
-
No change name ok?
Suddenly all the ones your character know are gone?
There is only certain settings and fictional universes where a wipe, where everyting, including reality changes to a totally different thing, is justifiable as inside the history, and they aren't medieval:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dark_City (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dark_City)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matrix_%28fictional_universe%29 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matrix_%28fictional_universe%29)
That's why I will consider whatever wipe that happens as an OOC fact, and I think that in a roleplay-based game, it isn't something that is actually wrong to do so.

just becuese you may do things like that.. i do not, players hate ME not my char and as such they transfer it to any rp they do to affect ME and my char.
just recently i made a char and as soon as ai logged in i heard shouts about my main char. some such bs as stealing items from my own event, rp'ing rape in game.. and other such BS. My guild also suffers due to slandering and Alts "spies" we get alts of players hating ME ( for ooc reasons ranging from not handing them 1m tria when asked or having bought a weapon from them cheply months back) and they using said alts to slander my guilds name by doing things like botting ot cheating others or just being jerks. I think that a player should have more respect and not do such things.. but i have no voice on the subject.
I assure you that i will not be keeping my char's name and that i will even change my chars race and such..
and no im not a jerk ic.. just ooc when you get on my bad side. I dont steal, cheat, lie. (i may with hold some facts when asked about things like bugs or such) but again.. i am honest and so is my char/s.

You hit the nail on the head. This is something that Seytra has ranted about in the past. There are people that Seytra really really hates OOC, and it infuriates him that he could be RPing with them without knowing it. He wants to know the real life identity of every character so that he can avoid them if he doesn't like the player behind the character (for whatever inane asinine ignorant pig headed vindictive reason he comes up with).
Of course, there are those who would do more than just ignore characters controlled by players they don't like. Some people might even get all their friends and guildmates to ignore such characters. And some people might actively try to interfere with or sabotage such characters. Ah, but such things are beyond Seytra's comprehension it seems.
Here's the real question. You might be playing with someone you don't like in real life. But if you're both having fun, what's the loss? To me, I think Seytra is largely concerned about revenge. It begs the question.... someone must have really hurt him in his past for him to be so bitter. Ah, but such topics aren't appropriate for a public forum.

Bartholin, I thought I made it clear that this was the opposite of what I actually think, by encapsulating it in the pseudo-tags "<TJPM blah>".
I don't know about the particular circumstances of the issues you cited, though even if these players would have originally been right in disliking you, the way they seem to be going about this, if your observations are accurate, is very wrong. In any case, I think that your experiences support the view that hidden alts are causing much more trouble than good.
I don't know what to make of you "only being a jerk OOCly if one gets on your bad side", though. Depends on what it takes, as well as what "being a jerk" actually means, I suppose.
Changing your main character still seems like an extreme measure to me. After all, this clearly is harassing and GMs can easily spot and sort it out, especially if you use /report. People have been banned for less...
Now, to keep our resident attention whore / refined troll happy:
There are people that Seytra really really hates OOC, and it infuriates him that he could be RPing with them without knowing it.
I'm sorry, but you're really exaggregating your importance once again (I know, you'll say that you didn't necessarily refer to you, while the general implication of your wording clearly hints at or at least includes you - I expect nothing less). I don't actually hate anyone here.
Granted, you are the one whom I dislike most, if that makes you feel important. I think that you are an attention whore and highly refined troll, as stated. And this is what makes you annoying, and untrustworthy, and naturally I want to avoid you. But that's it already.
He wants to know the real life identity of every character so that he can avoid them if he doesn't like the player behind the character (for whatever inane asinine ignorant pig headed vindictive reason he comes up with).
Hehe, thank you, Zanzibar. Obviously your desire to incite anger broke through your shiny mask of finely crafted phrases that keeps people from seeing you as the troll and attention whore that you are.
I don't care about the RL identity of players, as I have stated in my other "rants". I merely wish to be able to associate alts with their main char(s).
Of course, there are those who would do more than just ignore characters controlled by players they don't like. Some people might even get all their friends and guildmates to ignore such characters. And some people might actively try to interfere with or sabotage such characters. Ah, but such things are beyond Seytra's comprehension it seems.
However, there might also be people who create hidden alts specifically to harm others, gain personal information to later turn against someone, invade and maybe take over guilds, artificially create masses to fake support for something, etc.. I've witnessed "people actively try to interfere with or sabotage characters" even without actual reason. And guess what? Alts were used to do so.
Interestingly, the experiences Bartholin is citing also supports my view of the use (or rather, misuse) of alts, not yours.
Then again, if these players are so prone to turn on you at the slightest misunderstanding, wouldn't it be the best and least troublesome approach to just avoid them? After all, alt or not, there is bound to be trouble...
However, since it was your "character", Shalmaneser, who once upon a time infiltrated a guild, solely for the purpose of starting a guild war with a guild that you, Zanzibar, OOC-ly, disliked (because you didn't like one (or two?) of their higher up's) (even if not by using an alt), this sort of thing naturally seems to be no concern to you, and in fact to be "good RP", as you have repeatedly stated.
This in turn makes me wonder if you are not one of those "who would do more than just ignore characters controlled by players they don't like. Some people might even get all their friends and guildmates to ignore such characters. And some people might actively try to interfere with or sabotage such characters."...?
To me, I think Seytra is largely concerned about revenge. It begs the question.... someone must have really hurt him in his past for him to be so bitter. Ah, but such topics aren't appropriate for a public forum.
Zanzibar, Zanzibar, Zanzibar. When will you learn that it's not about revenge, it is about protecting my RP (short, medium and long-term), and not wasting time on RP that is doomed due to incompatible views on what RP is. In order to want revenge, you would first need to have had something done to you. And, even in case this disappoints you, being annoying on the forum doesn't make me wish to take revenge on you. However, I can't speak for you, obviously.
This in turn makes me wonder why you want these hidden alts so badly? After all, if you, as player, are as good a person as you pretend to be (which clearly enables you to sort out all your OOC problems with other players in a proper way outside the game), and if you, as player, have such a great skill to be able to adapt your RP to whatever player you may encounter, while at the same time maintaining coherency in your RP without making it shallow, then clearly there is no need for a secret alt at all?
Aww look, so much text, wasted just for you. I truly love the way you sprinkle misleading statements and implications all over your posts. I know that I shouldn't have replied to your post, because that's exactly what you wanted. I would even feel honoured that a reply of mine is so important to you that you lose control of your masquerade, if you would actually matter (and if you weren't whoring for any reply). I guess you did a really good job at your abusive craft this time. I would give you an award, but...
