Hi there,
I'm a current player of the RPG game Neverwinter Nights. If you don't know about it its a game which people can make their own RP worlds and host them as servers for people to join. I've been looking at more "one-world" approach MMORPGs and this one looks awesome and I'd love to try it.
The problem is though that I live in rural Australia and have a low-bandwidth satellite connection. Thats no problem normally, but it means i can't download 200MB+ games using it. My Dad does have a 2 Mbps connection at work that I could use, but it can't download .exe files (it can do vertually everything else though). So this brings me to my question: Would anyone be able to zip/rar/7z the game for me and upload it somewhere so I could download it? I know this is a pretty big ask, so I don't really expect someone would do it but just thought I'd ask anyway :)

Welcome to PlaneShift!
That shouldn't be a problem at all :) We're about to have a large update though, which may mean a new client within a couple of days - so before anyone rushes over to do this for you they may want to wait. If you don't mind, that is. Chances are you will be able to use our updater application to fetch new files as soon as the new client is released, but usually the updater mirrors take a bit longer to set up.
You can take this time to familiarize yourself with the game's setting, some commands, and of course the community on the forums :)
-
Firstly thanks for the quick reply :)
And no I don't mind waiting at all. Just to clarify, all updating done by the auto-updater right? and how big are the updates usually? Just need to be careful with my download limit.
-
The new client shouldn't be over 250MB as a whole package, but updates via the updater shouldn't be more than half that as a maximum. The updater isn't self-launching at the moment, so you will have to run it manually. If there are new files to be downloaded however, you will see a message on the character selection screen of the game :]
-
and adding to that, sometimes you will see that message even if you don't have updates to fetch. :whistling:
-
cool thanks
I've been reading some more info about the game, sounds like a great setting for RPing. Just to check, is the manual page up to date still? Just saw a (c) 2004 so I wasn't sure if its been changed in a while.
Anyway really looking forward to playing when the new version comes out :woot:

The Player Guide is outdated on some respects, but a lot of it still holds true and can be considered useful information :) If you have questions on any part of it, by all means ask away.

Ahh I see, thanks.
Also, I just had a look at the main page of the site again, I think a new update there:
2007.02.07
Another expansion of the PlaneShift world is ready! Client 0.3.018 is avaiable for download.
Here are some of the improvements contained in this release compared to 017 :
- New area south of hydlaa, called the winch.
- Hair styles support added. For now just the female ynnwn has different hair styles, but more will be added later
- New animations for some characters, like ynnwn male.
- New items and icons shipped into the client
- Lot of new quests loaded
- New faction system, you can see a first implementation in your skills window, under factions.
- GMs can register official events on the server, players participating to events can access events tab in quests window.
- Added new map function, to display/create maps
- First implementation of locks and keys (not fully usable yet)
- Many bug fixes and improvements
MacOSX and Linux version will be ready in few days. Please do not use the updater until further notice.
Is that it?
EDIT: Sorry to ask another question, but a friend of mine said he could upload it somewhere temporarily so i could download it, is that against any rules?
Thanks
-
Nope. :)
-
I see. Unfortunately he couldn't find any place to upload it that worked :( He had some FTP space but it was password protected and the computer I'd have to use can only download something that straight IE 6 could do. So if anyone has some webspace or anything and they could upload it to I'd really appreciate it :)

Firstly thanks, but the reason I needed help was because I have a 1GB download limit on this computer and have another one that could download it but the work firewall it has doesn't allow exe files :(
The problem is though that I live in rural Australia and have a low-bandwidth satellite connection. Thats no problem normally, but it means i can't download 200MB+ games using it. -
Ah, I remember your problem now. I'll see what I can do. :)
-
Maybe I could try to Rar it into pieces? that was you dont have to download a huge 200+MB file, but 10 20MB files. I'll try that later today.
Edit: Okay, I'm Raring the files up now. Do you have Winrar? If not, go to google.com and search for it. Download the free 40-day trial version.
Edit2: Uploading :) Will take about an hour. Mods, feel free to post this on the main site. But it will probably run out of bandwidth quickly. But still :) There will be anough bandwidth to download 431 total downloads.
-
Cool thanks a lot!
Yes I have WinRar among other archive programs so I'll be able to do it fine :)
edit: Just wondering, since you haven't put in a link, have there been any problems uploading the files Ahriman?
-
Isn't there someone down-under that can send you a cd by ordinary mail? I would, but I guess it takes a lot of time to send it from The Netherlands to you.
:offtopic:
Maybe for others it would be nice that we leave our torrents seeding, that's what a community is for I always thought. If you limmit your upload to a a third of your bandwith you should be able to play your game and help a community-member. At the moment I'm downloading with 200K(20seeds and more) but a week ago it was dead-slow (0seeds).
Well my torrent is seeding so time to install... :)

*hits self in the head*
Sometimes I forget the easiest fixes don't I...will have a friend send it to me soon. I'll update the post after I ask him if he says he'll do it :)
edit: He's going to download it on the weekend end and send it! Yay
