Title: Official Planeshift Trailer - Planning Phase - completed
Post by: Aznakh on February 16, 2007, 11:29:51 pm
After some lengthy deliberations we finally got through the preliminary steps to make an official Planeshift videogame trailer.   :sweatdrop:

So now that it has been done I will start with the production process and I need a lot of volunteers to help out  ;)

Here are the open positions for the project. Please mail all applications to aznakh@gmail.com or PM me.

Please do not post applications in this thread.

I usually check my mail daily. As the title says this will be the official trailer for Planeshift and this might go into gaming websites and so on ... so it has to look very professional.  8)
More details will be given to the people once they are involved.  :-X

Cameramen / Camerawomen: open 0/4 [COMPLETE]

Needs capturing software and possibility to encode into uncompressed video (quicktime readable format)

Voice actress: open 0/1 [COMPLETE]

Has to be a native english speaker with a good articulation and intonation.

2D Artist open 0/1 [COMPLETE]

Actors / Actresses open4/13

Has to be able to work in team. I will need actors for the following roles: (e.g. it would be good that people have characters of these races)

- 1 Enkidukai [Assigned]

- 1 Hammerwielder (should have some forging skill) [Assigned]

- 1 Lemur

- 1 Kran [Assigned]

- 1 Ynnwn [Assigned]

- 1 Klyros [Assigned]

- 1 Nolthrir / Dermorian [Assigned]

- 1 Ylian [Assigned]

- 5 Figurants 2/5

I want also to thank all the people who will be participating in this in advance and I hope that it will be the best video game trailer ever, because Planeshift doesn't deserve less.  \\o//

Frequently Asked Questions:

1. Is the script written ?

Yes, and it has gone through 3 major revisions and several minor ones.

2. Why can't I see the script now ?

The script will be revealed to the cast and crew once the cast and crew have been established. The reasons for this are obvious as we don't want any leaks since the content of the trailer is supposed to stay a secret until it's release .

3. But I cannot sleep at night ... I want to see the script

Get involved then and apply to be a volunteer.  ;D

4. What software do I need to be a Cameraman / Camerawoman ?

Anything that allows you to capture and encode in a Quicktime readable format (.mov .mpg .dv and some .avi encodings) with a minimum resolution of 1024x768 and at 24 fps. Those are the only requirements.

5. What is the time schedule for shooting ?

The time schedule will be set up once the recruitment process is over. I will establish a roster that tries to suit everybody.

6. Will the shooting be done on a private server or the official server ?

As it is the official trailer it shall be done on the official server. It is also in order to have all the armor skins and crafts available.

7. With what software will the editing be done ?

Final Cut Pro

8. Why don't you want to use a voice actor in the trailer ?

For the very reason that the atmosphere we want to give in the trailer will be best rendered by a female voice and that a female voice suits best with the script.

However please read the thread and send me a mail with your software equipment and encoding possibilities. It makes it easier for me to compose the roster.  ;)

1. Because a female voice will create the desired effect.

2. The description for the positions will be revealed once somebody mails me an application. I cannot reveal more info then there is in the post right now.  :-X

3. Yes I know that.

P.S.: could somebody sticky this post please

I have send my app in as well.  I would love to see this happen... if no female voice is found, I have been known to do a great american Elmo, Ernie, Kermit the frog, Mickey Mouse, and other characters.  I still maintain that Disney stole the voice of Stitch from me ;)  LoL

I am not sure, just put Ynnwns and Enkidukais on the trailers, many races have no models. Plus the bugs.
It will require some work to make it attractive with the current resources.

 There should be an Unnoficial Spoof as well, there's more than enough material for it:

- "Piles of Dust"
- "Fell off the World" bugs
- Character models capable of staying all in the same position with no collision detection
- "testanim" weird animation effects
- list goes...

Hello everybody,  :-[

First of all I am sorry for my long absence, but I had some issues in my life which forced me to travel for my job. I will still be gone until the end of the month and then I will be back fully with the trailer project. So send in the applications, because the sooner we have the people the sooner we can start shooting  ;)
Title: Announcement
Post by: Aznakh on April 13, 2007, 12:37:48 am
Hello everybody,

First of all I am sorry for my long absence without notification. The reason for my absence was that upon my return from my travel I succombed to a heavy case of pneumonia and was hospitalised for 2 weeks and half.
Due to that I obviously could not post online nor verify my e-mail.
Right now I am still in a rather weakend state and under medication. However I should soon recover fully.

I have not given up on the PS trailer project and beg the people to send in the applications so that upon my recovery we can start shooting.

Thanks to all the people for their patience.

However I am ready now to fully begin with the project we are all waiting for since so long.  \\o//
I will post this friday an updated roster with all the positions taken allready and the open positions.

Thank you all for your support and faith in this project.

If you are going to help with this now is the time to speak up. We have cause to step up production so if you have it in you to try out for the project now is a good time to make your presence known. We should be shooting this already!

I completely agree with Xillix. We should be allready in post-production in fact.   :-\ I started out with this project over 10 months ago and it should have been nearly or totally completed by now. I find it amazing that such a big community cannot produce a few people willing to help.
I understand that it is on a voluntary basis, however since we love this game so much this is an opportunity to give something back to it. So please sign up. If we cannot gather the people by the 31st of July I might consider abandoning the project alltogether  :(

Are you sure that everyone who initially signed up is still with us? Anyway I'll be a background character if needed.

@pyros I am not surprised. People organise events where few people attend as others generally seem more interested in training or just standing in Hydlaa being boring.

Perhaps if you posted a script people would be more inclined to participate. You could then have open auditions to fill the parts....maybe a little excessive but more info might help.

The fact it's the 'Official Planeshift Trailer' having been approved by Talad himself should be more than enough to gain peoples interest.
Title: Re: Recruiting volunteers for Official Planeshift Trailer [Recruitement Phase]

Planeshift is supposed to have an emphasis on role playing right? So instead of this entirely OOC means of going about it make it an IC opportunity put up notices on the hydlaa plaza and the oja message boards, have auditions in the game, make a documentary on the making of the play, there is your trailer. Two trailers in one, they final production of the play and the making of the production.

None of the I got some nebulous idea, come here and be my stooge, I'll tell you what to do when we get started. I am sorry if this characterization is a little uncharitable but it seems accurate enough. Give people something to grab their interest, "Talad has decreed!" ain't gonna cut it.

I see the first post has been updated with more information, What prey tell is a figurant? Is that an character of random race? I am a little confused as well about the open lines, is open 1/1 mean there is a position available and open 0/1 mean it is full or is it the other way round? I freely admit that I did not go back and check the full thread before my previous posting and see now some of what I said has been addressed.

Hi everybody,

I am glad that there has been such a big response to my worries. This means that the community is doing well.  \\o// I have updated the main post for it to be clearer on what concerns the open positions. Open 1/4 means that one on four positions are open.

Now to get to some of your questions:

Perhaps if you posted a script people would be more inclined to participate. You could then have open auditions to fill the parts....maybe a little excessive but more info might help.

The script cannot be revealed because there is a story being told in it and there would now really be no point in releasing the story before the actual trailer is released.  :-X

For the above mentioned reason it is not possible to do so. Besides, the set up to shoot would take too much time in order to make it an ingame event and people will need to be concentrated. Also there would be too much OOC conversation going, so that it would not really create a good IC atmosphere.
e.g. "move the camera over there and turn like this in order to shoot this and this", etc.

I will this week-end put up a clearer roster, and keep people updated via e-mail and PM at least once per week of how far we are.

Once again I hope that we will be able to start shooting soon (TM)  :P

Personally I think you will be better with having one cameraman as at least then your film quality will remain consitant. Otherwise you may have film that is of varied quality and it just wouldn't flow as nicely. If you do have more than one you have to make sure they can all film with the same software and at the same quality.

Some kind of voice client such as teamspeak would be immensely helpful, I would think. You could relay your instructions in real time but I suppose not everyone might have a headset. The times I used it had little impact on game response.

During or after this project, I think a series of official gameplay videos need to be created.  It doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me why many magazines would be asking Talad for only a trailer, because then they'll just ask for gameplay videos next.  Such videos should demonstrate the crafting, fighting/magic, questing, etc. systems that we have present in the game, and could use a male voice as a narrative.

Hello everybody,

it is good to see that the project got back some life into it. A big  to everybody. I am currently travelling for professional reasons, so i am not able to be around as often as I would like to. Also my internet access will be very limited until end of next week.

Is there a "demorian" missing in the request list for actors?  ;) Just saying
And also, what does the 2d graph person have to do? Because I can handle grpahics a little bit ^^

The skin for the nolthrir and the dermorian are the same currently. So in fact it would be the same. As far as the 2D artist is concerned we allready have a person currently working on it, and it looks very promising.

Off course the trailer is just a start.  ;) We will then produce more videos as time goes by and the game evolves.

Personally I think you will be better with having one cameraman as at least then your film quality will remain consitant. Otherwise you may have film that is of varied quality and it just wouldn't flow as nicely. If you do have more than one you have to make sure they can all film with the same software and at the same quality.

it is much easier to work with multiple camera angles, this is a directorial choice, and I prefer to have several cameramen so that should one not be able to make it we have backup.

*edit*

As I look at the roster, I am happy to see that there are only 4 more people missing for us to start shooting  :sweatdrop:.

I am happy to see that the community is that well together and would like to give everybody a big  \\o// for having come this far.

Once the remaining positions are filled up I will notify everybody involved by e-mail / PM and arrange a meeting on IRC so I can lay out the further planning of the project.

Thanks a lot to everybody.

Hello,

Just a small update:

- I am still travelling, however I will have from now on a more stable internet access.

- I will compose this week-end the roster of all the people participating in the project since there is only 1 position to be filled in and send it to the people involved. To all the people involved please do send me an e-mail (no PM !!) giving me the following info: e-mail and name to put on the roster.

If everything goes well we should be able to start shooting in 14 days.  \\o//

No, unfortunatley not.  :(

I would like to make a small rectification. The e-mail adress which you will send me will remain entirely confidential and only your name will appear in the roster. I am just saying this since there has been some concern by some people about this issue.

Now I hope that before next monday I will have all the names in so I can start working on the roster and send out the script to everybody.  \\o//

I love the idea of a PS trailer! Perhaps one day, with enough manpower, we could pull off a TRUE trailer, complete with flashy graphics AND in-game clips....

But as of now I wish you all luck. I would love to help with voices, but unless you need a younger male voice  :-\ I'll be content with watching it when it comes out :D

after some time I finally got my new laptop  \\o// !!!!! A Macbook Pro 2.4  :D Fortunately I was able to recover most of the data. I will send a briefing e-mail to everybody involved in the project once I have a moment (end of the fiscal year, so I have rather much work as well  ;) )
The project is NOT dead !!!.

Maybe someone in the community could pick this up? Most of the team is too engaged in other duties to do it.

I'll be contacting Aznakh for any material he's/she's collected so far (i.e. scripts and ideas) as to attempt to pick up the productions progress, but not before making a brief assessment of course.

I have a question I'd like to put to you the community.

What would you expect or like to see in a game trailer?, namely for PlaneShift.

All your "constructive" feedback is/would be greatly appreciated.

PlaneShift is spelled with a capital S; first off in any game trailer I would like to see the name of the game spelled correctly.

As mentioned in a previous post, I was willing to take on this project and role but not before subjecting it to a short evaluation.
And so I regret to announce that unfortunately I am unable to continue as project leader for the trailer.

My apology's to those very few who were involved and to Xillix.

[Edit]
I would like to make it clear that this doesn't necessarily mean the trailer project is dead or that I do not wish to participate, however it does mean this project is without director.

Pyros is there a location where we can view the info about the trailer that you have collected?

At this time, no.  This is mainly be because there is no info worthy of note.  Aznakh, when he/she was the Lead Director, held all the info but as far as im aware this was never shared hence why progress is/was slow.  Despite several emails, I have received no reply from Aznakh.

To date there are only 3 of the original participants who are actively involved, myself being one of them.

I want this trailer to be perfect and I wont accept anything less.  I would like to take my time being as I feel uncertain as to which approach to take.
However based on how long this trailer project has been active for, I feel the community should or would be expecting to see results by now.

As of yet, I am shamed to say no.

Firstly I would like to apologise for the double posting ive made within this thread, and I must do so one more time but for a very good reason.

It is my pleasure to announce that the trailer project is once more back on course having at last, received the script, an IRC channel and a website to work off.

The project is with momentum at last. \\o//

Congratulations.

Don't miss my support in the postproduction ... but the planning and pre-production comes first.

I believe I wrote you some ideas per mail. Hope you made your opinion about them.

I'd like to see some of the races, e.g. Kran, Enkidukai, Klyros - moving to their destination.
And combat, of course, perhaps against a Tefusang?
The glorious city of Hydlaa must appear, maybe a pan across the Plaza?
I have many ideas, all of which I can't put into action, but since you and some others are making this, I'm eternally grateful & hopeful of the results

Which of those are open?

Anyone out there still interested in this thing?

There are some tests that I want to do with Crystal Space's movierecorder plugin soon (~spring 2009) that can ultimately be brought into the trailer project.  What I am interested in is testing the feasibility of recording trailer-quality video using compiled psclients.  psclient is capable of recording video without running a second process such as Fraps, but only if you compile the client yourself.

If you are interested in using your machine to record video of you playing PlaneShift for the hell of it, then join the #ps-mv channel on Freenode please.
