Title: Puck the talking Yulbar
Post by: emeraldfool on February 20, 2007, 09:45:27 pm
Hmm, I was wondering if it would be against the settings to have a magical familiar who could talk (seeing as how it actually has 60 charisma and 60 intelligence, which is over triple the CHR of his owner, and only 5 less INT, it seems like it would be against the settings NOT to have it charming and witty... Plus I really want to startle and confuse newbies :P)

Anyway, I know there'll be at least a couple people who are against the idea, but I was just wondering if it would be strictly in breach of the Planeshift world...

(I also wanted to be the first person to officially come up with the idea within PS, at least since /mypet was introduced, so I can say I am the godfather of talking Yulbars/Groffels :P)

It would be worth it just for that. For once I don't really care about the settings :P

Well, if it's magical... ;) Could be the spirit of a deceased mage screaming to get out. I don't see this as a breach of settings, necessarily. I do wince at the thought of everyone's pets suddenly talking - so be sure you've a really good reason for giving yours this ability. Keep in mind that Charisma and Intelligence may function differently for pets.

There's a pet-standard for stats and a player-character standard. 80 Intelligence on an Ylian is not going to be the same as 80 Intelligence on a Groffel.

:P (I'm just joking, I have a decent reason. And it's not some cliche like a spell backfiring, or a witch's curse...)

Keep in mind that Charisma and Intelligence may function differently for pets.

Thought of that too, but I figured it was a fair point :P

Also: Pets only really last for a few minutes, and then can't be summoned for ages. It shouldn't be that much of a problem... (until you can train empathy higher)

If you want a pet that can talk, you're not looking for an Yulbar, but for some kind of parrot in Planeshift.

I did that once, kind of... I named my pet Jjairr, sat it on a rock, hid nearby, and talked to passing newbies xD

I wonder if you have to be in range to issue /mypet commands, or could you use them as walkie-talkies...

Redundant, there're already the /tell commands for making "walkie-talkies", of course putting them IC for anything 'sides whispering is a little weird. Unless there are some magical communication spells, devices or alike in Yliakum.

I meant using it as an advertisement tool. Like sticking it in the gold mine, with a note tied to it, advertising a shop near Harnquists that they'll pass on their way back to sell their load... That way you can spam two sectors at once :P

Last I checked, if you said "hello", or "how are you?", they would respond.  Now were they in full sentences and completely coherant?  Not that I recall, but they did talk.

Aye, this seems to suggest that they are capable of actually communicating, way beyond what a parrot can do. In fact, I expect them to become more proficient at this when they grow, since the current stage is supposed (to my knowledge, anyway) to be more or less the equivalent of an infant.

Speaking of "magic pets" and such... going by the ingame content, each and every pet out there ATM is magical. It's spirit is bound to a ring by a spell. Plus, you can summon and dismiss them, unlike RL pets.
I'm not sure about the time limits for summoning though. Possibly it was introduced to prevent pet spamming / use as signs, so it doesn't necessarily emphasize the magical nature of pets.

I wonder if there will be "normal" pets some day (with loyality instead of mind control, etc.).

Would It actually know what it was saying or would this be  just  imitation like a parrot?

So all the times I said "You can go now", or "Go Away" to my dog, it didn't really leave this plane of existence?  Well, there goes that theory.  Now to find out where she really goes, preferably without leaving my comfortable chair.

---

Other then that, interesting.

If you assume that that for each second the pet is on our plane it takes some strain from being summoned from where ever we summon them from and away from their natural place in things, or that we have to concentrate to keep them here instead of there, then it makes some sense that they could only be here for so long, a time limit that would probably be effected by will.

I believe it's more than just imitation.  I think I recall getting different phrases back, if I said "how are you?" a few different times.  So I'm leaning toward the side of, it understands what the owner asks it, at least by a little, and is able to formulate a few different responses, rather than just giving the same response back over and over again.
