Title: Arena Training [SUGGESTION]
Post by: Lolitra, Celorrim Purrty Twins on February 24, 2007, 12:43:32 pm
As a result of the rather sad post http://hydlaa.com/smf/index.php?topic=27814.0 I gave it some thought and I like to be one of solutions rather than ranting about what is wrong... or right.

The IDEA.

If in the arena area there were cages in each of the sections from which monsters would spawn... and at the doorway was a NPC which would have a 'key' to open the cages...  he could sell the training of the creatures to individuals or groups.  Once a player has paid for the creature he has 'ownership' of it and only he can attack it [unless he is grouped], until s/he dies... if s/he dies the ownership moves to the next in the group or, if there is none left alive - the NPC who will of course 'heal and replace in the cage' his creature.

[Edit]  one could buy several creatures... and opt to fight one at a time or several at a time - building up different skills?

Also the NPC's could then have knowledge of what creatures are best to train with for what skill....  and they could have quests... like 'get eggs of Trepor in the wild' or 'young of an Ulber..' etc... which would then get players hunting in the wild too...  The NPC's could have a set stock and if that stock runs out, the quest is issued?

Also the NPC could give locations of good trainers as part of their dialog... to help the new players...

The NPC would also be a point of selling the eggs or young to.. [but the arena creatures would not 'drop' young or eggs.]

That mixed with RANDOM spawning of creatures in the wild would make for more real 'hunts' and less ooc crap of Kill stealing or what ever they winge about.

I think that this would make the Arena more IC with the setting as - one would have to pay to use its facilities...   also, it would force those without cash to go 'hunting' until they accumulate tria to use the more 'controlled environment' of the areana.  I also think that wild beasts should be more difficult to beat than the arena ones... unless you pay extra for the 'mature' range?

Your thoughts please?

It seems like a pretty good idea... but are you saying we would need to pay to fight?

The intial post is rather irrelevant since killstealing does not exist, the game mechanics work flawlessly on that part. A creature is only yours when the game mechanics say so and else there is not a thing to whine about.

This suggestion .. it's not bad but could use some modifications to make it easier to implement and also probably closer towards what the Devs already have in mind for the Arena. Gregori Stevald runs the Arena, if you talk to him he'll tell you that he sets the fights up. I expect this to really happen in the future. Fights being set up in the combat pits ... they would basically happen according to what Lolitra suggested. You pay to fight a certain number of certain creatures. You win, you get loot and your tria that you paid back ... you lose, you get to die and gain nothing.

Sparring in the arena is something different ... it should basically go the way it goes now. There are mercenaries, gladiators and other fighters spread around the arena and you can pick one to spar with. The only thing I'd change would be not letting them die. Only allow wooden training weapons to be used in the arena outside the fighting pits. Nobody dies so there will be no loot. They'd only serve for training up skills and recieving experience. Of course to prevent 'botting' a fight will only last until one of both sides are too tired to continue (stamina bar) or one side is damaged too much. Instead of dying the fight ends and the NPC will not accept a new fight until they are at full health and stamina again.

Tournaments could be set up in the Arena, from what it is suggested to be IC, characters would be putted in different categories according to their current skills, and the winners would receive some kind of trophy and a financial reward.

Or perhaps some trepors could be unleashed against those who messed up with the Octarchs or that followed forbidden religions like in the roman colosseum(But that goes in another discussion, a pretty grey area, but I doubt Yliakum is intended to be a totalitarian State).

Well, yes, in the arena one would have to... it is only logical as it is a building that in real terms would have to have some sort of revenue.

to have a general sparring area for PVP, and or against wondering NPC's would be good for free....

The tournements Idea is rather good too...

All of the above might just encourage me to use the mechanics for training more, as it would be more in line with RP.. than just smacking a creature at a spawn spot and getting into a silly argument when as Zan said the current mechanics are flawless already, either you are fighting it, or you are not... it is not your property!  [but that is not the point of this post... this is about how the Arena is used
