Title: PS future.
Post by: Volund on February 27, 2007, 05:17:53 am
This isnt a wish list thread, I wanted to know if planeshift life really continues, does it keep going or are we at a standstill?
-swords
-bows
-spears
-armor.
-magic
Thats basic medieval etc. right? but does planeshift keep going into the next age? do we get guns or new inventions.
Im just asking this but is it medieval or a mixture of that and renaissance?
[let me know if this has been done before on the forums]

I'm pretty sure they're adding rocket launchers with the next update.  I plan to use them on people who make OOC shouts near Harnquist.

This isn't going to be an evolution of the centuries - PlaneShift will forever be a medieval fantasy. No guns, but there may be several mechanical technologies (as seen by the Winch).

No.

Greatest association of RPG "players" in the world shows the might of their members, although one of them decided to play another "game" called "AK-47" for a while:

Bows would be nice.

And when bows are introduced is 'mobile combat' still going to be 'cheating' (not that it is now...)
when a melee fighter rushes to close the distance before he is shot full of arrows?

LOL.

Cavalry would be GREAT by the way. :)

Cavalry might be a long way off, it will have to include some pretty good graphics and a whole new skill/levels for to ride a horse etc.

The mongols and the scythians specialized in mounted archers... moving while shooting should take a lot of training, but it should at least be possible.

Yeah, still though horses and mounts might not be availabe until 1.0 or even longer, probably,

BTW when I said guns I meant those old muskets from the renaissance.

1.0 = all features of the game coded, included, turned on, and bug free.

I've never seen any 1.0 version of any game that didn't have at least on post commercial release patch. Most have several before they're bug free.

anyone have an estimate on how far off 1.0 is?

We're at 0.3 and PS has been in 3D development for nearly five years now. So... take a guess :]

Where does Steel Blue fit in again?
Title: Re: PS future.
Post by: Karyuu on February 28, 2007, 07:27:12 am
Steel Blue will be version 0.4 - we get a name change at every similar "milestone": Atomic Blue, Molecular Blue, Crystal Blue, Steel Blue, and beyond.

Right, but at what stage of developement will CB turn into SB?
Title: Re: PS future.
Post by: Volund on February 28, 2007, 07:30:48 am
Oh crap, by the time which I estimate is 12 years I will be im my middle 30's...no really? :(
Title: Re: PS future.
Post by: Karyuu on February 28, 2007, 07:32:57 am
I've been told that SB won't be as drastic of a change as CB was - more like features will be implemented and many additions made and ultimately you'll step back and realize that you're playing Steel Blue. There will be a new client download with more stuff, and there are definite goals to reach for version 0.4 - it just won't be as drastic of a change as the last reworking of almost the entire system.

Volund: Development is going pretty fast recently, actually. These updates we're doing every two months began fairly recently, and a good amount of work really started to be put into the game last year and continuing into this year. 1.0 is rather far to think about, but the next milestone (Steel Blue) may perhaps take a year or two. Or heck, sooner :] Who knows.

I vote that the game gets a new name every month, just to make it seem like progress is happening faster than it is.

:( I cant wait for pets, mounts, archery, and my favorite shadowy night attacks.

AND one day a cut off area will be a pvp only area, where I can kill everyone !

I like your way of thinking, zanzibar.

Atleast people will stop complaining about slow development

"I see no change"
"Look harder, any idiot can see the change"

Emperor's clothes ftw.

I remember the amount of updates in MB...we barely got a chance to play there were so many...right? :P

I vote that the game gets a new name every month, just to make it seem like progress is happening faster than it is.

Something based of the propaganda tactics that  are used by some commercial projects when they release "new" things after version 1.0. AKA: "Expansion Packs",  "Platinum Editions",  "Gold Editions" "Blablabla Edition", etc.

Just like saying:

"Windows 98 Second Edition is totally different from Windows 98"

There are no paying customers here, so using such types of tricks is a unnecessary.

noob thinks: Cool, new name! They must have made a much better game now.
noob has entered Planeshift
noob leaves Planeshift after few hours thinking: WTF? This game is the same! Why they wanna put those stupid names to versions then?

I didn't think it was funny.
But as it was supposed to be an approach on humor...

Bah same crap, this game still sux!

April

New name c00l, I wanna see the 1337 new content!

July

October

At least it will serve for something good. A new barrier for *cough*Run Escape*cough* "leets".

Still it's propaganda. Lets make each client with an number(th) and the "Edition"

Last one would probably be

Planeshift 1000th Edition  :P

Geez.. I would hope they would never add guns to the game lol...

Imagine... This old player who has not played for 2 years, and he logs in to find that his in rusting armour with a rusty sword while everyone has a tommy-gun...

Yeah that would be somthing....
Plus to overpowered weaponms at the moment. If you wanted to go hand to hand, your screwed.
it would end up looking somthing like the Indiana jones scene.

Player: /pose - does some strange pose, ultra harcore technical hand crap and looks cool with their swords

Player2: Shoots player1 and walks off.

plus with the idea of king of the hill style guild wars PVP sty;le stuff that people are interested... does anyone get a d-day image?

It used to be that melee was as good or better than swords or axe.  (Daggers weren't around then.)  The problem is that if you have someone skilled in unarmed combat and someone equally skilled in knife fighting or longsword, the unarmed guy is screwed.  It's entirely realistic.

There should be a way to make melee more attractive, and not just by adding "melee based" weapons (bit of a contradiction in terms, but you know what I mean).  Perhaps melee could be trained to a higher level than weapons.  There could be some hidden NPC on top of some lonely mountain all by himself, and he happens to train melee fifty levels past what anyone trains swords etcetera.  Of course, finding him will be a trick since he's so isolated, and perhaps he won't always be where you left him.  And of course you'll need to fetch him some strawberries before you can train with him, and they happen to only grow at the base of the mountain.

That would be good, melee is completely useless in game against a equal level in weapons. Some bronze knuckles would be nice.

(as seen by the Winch).

How about a zip line then, say between  the tall tower and the library. We can all go splat on the side of the library going 40 mph. A fun new way to DR, and an alternative off the tower to the big drop/jump.

But on a serious note, if NO on bazookas, how about a YES on jet packs? then we can /unstick from the azure sun.

Wax on... Wax off  vs sword= pick up hand off the ground. If you want realistc, make sheaths for weapons(stuff'em in your inventory) so unarmed is the only option when in town.(or in the presence of athority) Give unarmed greater dodging ability but no parry(pick up hand off ground), throw in judo in the mix by tossing your foe about, and add a pinch of TV wrestling. With that you get  a monkey punch followed by a leg toss and ending with a scissor lock, just before being split in two by their axe.

I'm gonna play an Enkidukai assassin. Enkidukai look like their specialty will be stealth related. I think this race would be the best at  bows/arrows if they put them in, as their agility looks to be highest. Heres hoping for archers in the future ^_^

I don't think guns will go well with the medieval setting, i wouldn't want to be holding a sword when i meet an RPG user lol
