Now that EVE Online was mentioned....
Space games? Well I prefer the ones like Freelancer. There is a promising project( 100% Open-source ) of a space combat game with an ample universe called "Vega Strike" that is intended to have in the future MMO support. Personally I prefer to pilot a starship than to roll some dices and clash stats. Or perhaps command a capship in grand space battles while having other players controlling the turrets.

Yeah, I thought that I would much prefer being able to pilot the ship instead of clicking stuff, but after I tried it for a bit I do like it. Personally I don't think any project without a very big budget can compete with EVE now, at least not for the same genre and style. They've pretty much got it perfect imo; no grinding, strong player controlled economy, socially based to the point that player interaction really does have an affect on the game and it's really easy to roleplay. So easy that people do it naturally without thinking. And there's only one world, so they have 30k players on the same 'server' at the same time. Oh, and QA seems pretty good. I've yet to run into any bugs and the performance is great.
