I Decided to re-download and play CB today after many months. I Found myself in the death realm, I guess that's where I left off my last time I played. To my surprise the place was much bigger and I was happy, until i realized it was also much harder to find my way out. I asked a bunch or people but no one even bothered to help me. So, I decided to try to follow people but all of them would run and since my character had low stamina they would always lose me. I ended up figuring out that i hand to fall off the path and go into the cave thing and I followed the trail from there. But, the problem here is, I died about 15-20 times trying to get out of the death realm. The Paths are simply way too narrow which make the controls seem very awkward in the situation. The controls of planeshift seem flawless out in the open city but once you begin the sensitive turning along with the awkward camera angles in teh death realm you have a whole mess of frustration just trying to figure out where you're going. I also got stuck like 8 times while in the death realm.
I think either the design of the death realm or the controls need to changed to make the death realm less of a painful experience.
PS: I had no clue if this was off topic or a wish or anything. I just stuck it in general discussion move it if it needs to be moved thanks.
PPS: I'm still stuck there. :surrender:
PPPS: Thanks for moving it to whoever who moved the thread. And good news! Efflixi made it out in once piece thanks to a helpful Enki.

It's supposed to be painful :P We want you to suffer for dying!
<.< I do anyway. It'd be really cool if we could have dynamic portals everywhere so the layout of the DR changed every hour or so xD
-
I actually wouldnt mind that as long as I didn't keep getting stuck and falling to my death.
-
The getting stuck issue seems to be fairly recent, actually. It's been reported in the BT as well - something is screwy in the latest update that's causing people to discover the world is made of flypaper.

*Cough* Really needs to be improved

Need to fixed(Something like those I guess)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hall_of_mirrors_effect (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hall_of_mirrors_effect) - Skybox HOM bug
http://wiki.beyondunreal.com/wiki/BSP_Hole (http://wiki.beyondunreal.com/wiki/BSP_Hole) - Fell off the World bugs???
Holes can manifest themselves as:
* a player can walk through walls and fall through floors.
* a spot of the map where the player dies for no reason
* an invisible obstacle

Efflixi Aduro, the controls work fine for me. I use W and S to move forward and back, and I use the mouse to turn. Set mouselook to the caps lock key, and use 3rd person perspective.
-
Caps Lock for mouselooking? What happens if you forget and start noob-shouting? :P
I use right-click for mouse-looking (I click the middle wheel for the context menu). Move with the arrows, and usually use 3rd person, though I change to 'Free Rotation' when I'm RPing so I can look around.
I rarely die in the Death Realm, and I can just about run through the entire thing, except for the winding paths and the drop. And I've only ever gotten stuck in those little holes on the bridge, which /unstick worked fine to undo.
I think you're just too used to molecularisms :P

On my computer, the caps lock doesn't affect Planeshift's chat box. I can have it on or off and type normally.

Right, but with caps lock you can have it "stuck" on just like the old days.

Actually it's anti-noob.

YES!!! If you mean what I think you do then I agree totally and I am glad that the DR is like that :)
-
I personally like the death realm, nothing more annoying than falling down a hill to die and lose all the experience you recieved all day, but not in Planeshift! you get to keep all that hard earned experience, and your weapons and armor dont decay, you dont get wounds. It is a fitting way to discourage dying without a major stepback. I found my way out rather quickly the first time, just takes a little exporing and you get used to it. I much rather have this than lose experience, or get wounds, or damage my equipment!

Is he being sarcastic or not? I can't tell.

Not. Personally, I agree with him. Aside from deleting the character upon death, there's no real IC way to deal with death - losing experience doesn't make any sense.
And when the DR's massive and confusing I think that'll be deterrent enough.
Still, I would actually like to see a different take on death for once - where it's more like a journey than a final doom, and there are things much worse out there...

Isn't that the plan?

Lots of people seem adverse to treating death like anything but how we treat it in the real world. In other words, if a character dies they expect them to be dead.
Whereas I would prefer it where you could just cut your own throat (if you had the nerve) and then travel elsewhere inside the Death Realm. (Although maybe after a while your soul starts to degrade and you become more and more evil or something...)
-
I think the death penalty is to weak now. Players should try to keep alive as long as possible.

Why would it make you evil?

I suppose it depends on your definition of evil. Mine would be someone with no conscience and no remorse, who delights in other's torment - i.e. someone who's 'soulless'... (Though having not met someone who lacks a soul, I guess I wouldn't know, but it's just fiction...)

You're throwing around a lot of assumptions. Since I don't believe in the idea of a soul in any religious sense, I don't have a preconcieved notion of what magic powers it grants so I guess I have a more open mind. But yeah, you're making assumptions.

As i said early i do like this twist on death... I think losing exp is just a stupid way to deal with it...The death realm perhaps is your souls method of trying to find its way back to your body - if you fail you die.... or put a time limit on it, if you dont get out of the death realm in less than some given amount of time your body loses any chance of being saved and then "permadeath" takes place. Another idea could be that you lose all of your equipment in the area in which you died, you were resuccitated and then have to travel out and get your equipment... if you don't get there in time and someone else finds it they can loot it - it would become free game... just a thought.
-
I believe it says in the settings somewhere (But I cant be bothered looking for the quote) that when you are sent to the DR your whole body is transported, not just your soul. This would include all weapons and armor the character was carrying at the time of death. I can see some quests being rather difficult if your inventory doesnt follow you :)

Hmm, the only way I could see that as being viable is if we are like the 'chosen ones' of the Gods, and whenever we die they 'intervene' and teleport us to the Death Realm right before we die (and the Death Realm is a place where your soul is like, kept in stasis, so you can't die inside)...
-
Doesnt have to fit in line with the reality we experience does it?
Why cant this just be the way that the PlaneShift universe functions?
I can imagine a Resident of Yliakum being quite confused over our concept of death (be it non-existance, an after-life or resurrection in something other than ones own body).
This does of course make me wonder what happens when someone dies of old age. Why are there not loads of geriatrics sat in the first room of the DR unable to get out? And also makes me think about the bit in the settings that says that the people of Yliakum have no reverance for corpses and just throw them down the trash chutes.
-
Keep your eyes peeled: answers to (most of) these questions are coming from the settings department very soon.

Excellent, I will look forward to reading that, I am as confused as everyone else about how it works. It is a breath of fresh air to have such an inventive system for death (being most MMORPG's use the exp loss). I would like to read as to how this fits into the plaeshift world as a whole and in with the setting and stories behind it. Other wise great job devs!
-
I don't believe in a 'soul' at all in RL but as I found out before in another thread there appearantly is a soul as Talad said that the body and soul travel to the death realm which implies that they are seperate entities.
As for having your inventory, I think it would be totally absurd to suppose that your clothes would go but your sword you were carrying wouldn't. I don't think naked people would sit well with the family fun aspect.
-
I totally agree Parallo. I was simply saying if the soul travels to the death realm then the lifeless body (and everything with it would remain) how that works with clothing... well i have no answer for that hehe. I just would like to read an explanation as to how the death realm works in the world of planeshift. They do say there is no regard for corpses and it just seems like there is a piece to the puzzle we havent seen yet.

Is there a complaint here or a philosophical discussion?
efflux it is much easier than you suggest. I found my way out quite easily. That is my complaint.

The difference here is you have played planeshift. I hadn't been on in months and I simply reported what I went through.
-
I think Xillix means on starting PS the way out is too easy. Not now after knowing the way.
-
Precisely, no game is absolutely noob friendly otherwise why would you have the term noob? Death Realm should certainly be more difficult IMO. The simple way out in incredibly easy to find, I wont say it here but it should be common sense. I figured it out immediately. There are many other ways in which the game is not newb friendly that I would like to address the difficulty of the death realm is not one of them.
-
Death Realm should certainly be more difficult IMO.
Not before all "fell off the world" and death-provoking bugs are fixed I hope.
About Death Realm, I took it seriously when I played PS for the first time, as in that time for me Death = Delete Character.
Only one IC death happened to one of my characters(an alt) months ago, who is still down there... and perhaps may take some more time to escape from death.

Update on my own quote: There are now answers available on the DR. You just have to know where to look. :)

Lemme guess...... DR NPCs? :)

I was annoyed by the DR when I started, it doesn't bother me too much now but the one that I absolutely hate is the broken parts of the catwalk that if you fall in you usually need to /unstick to get out. They wouldn't bother me if you just had to maneuver to get out but sticking to the geography is just not on in my books.
-
and... what about those black doors in DR?
It would be nice if we can use them as random teleporting doors inside the DR... (emphasys on 'random' word).
anyone remember the labyrinth on Monkey Island I, the one below the island ? (I'm too old, I know :-[)
When you cross a door you're teleported, but if you cross back that door, you'll be in a different site than first.
