Hello there everyone!
I am Proglin as a player, and Yill as a Game Master. Two seperated characters that both have a love for organising things. With Proglin it's guild quests and the tournaments I used to do. And with Yill it's the GM-events I organise together with the entire GM-team. These events are purely intended for you all to enjoy and give pretty shinies as rewards.... or not. I organised and wrote quiet a few now, and would like you all to tell me what you want. To keep it simple and understandable, here's a multiple choice sheeth for all of you. Please take some time to answer them and help me and the rest of team out when it comes to creating, hosting and organising these events.

a) GMT+0/GMT+2
b) GMT+3/GMT+5

a) Yes
b) No
c) Some of them
d) A lot of them, but not every one of them.
5) What do you dislike most when it comes to events?
a) All the walking
b) OOC intteruptions
c) The length
d) the times when they are hosted.
e) Other..................
6) GM events are made so that the players have a 99% chance of winning. Is it a good idea to lower this chance, making it so that a player can loose?
a) Yes, it increases exitement.
b) No, I awlays wat to win.
c) Sometimes
d) Other............

e) what's a GM event?
9) GM events are random, cause otherwise it would be OOC. Do you prefer random events, or would you like to see a forum post announing one?
a) I like it random, just as Role-play is supposed to be.
b) I like them pre-announced, so I can join in the ROle-play.
c) Couldn't care less.
10) And at last, rewards. What do you tink about the rewards in the events. Think realistic for this one.
a) They are good as it is. No wonder you don't get a suit of heavy armour from a mushroom collector.

Hmm, sure, okay. I know how much my opinion is worth :P
1) What time-zone do you live in?
a) GMT+0/GMT+2
2) How many GM events did you participate in as a whole?
b) 1-2
3) What type of events do you prefer?
a) Role-play
4) Do the events last too long?
c) Some of them - I tend to link-die a lot (on average once every 30 minutes), which means I get cut off sometimes...
5) What do you dislike most when it comes to events?
d) the times when they are hosted.
6) GM events are made so that the players have a 99% chance of winning. Is it a good idea to lower this chance, making it so that a player can lose?
a) Yes, it increases excitement.
7) Small events always tend to be more realistic. Big events are always... big. Do you prefer Big epic events, or small events such as a woman in need of herbs?
a) I prefer big, epic events
8 ) If you joined in one, do you enjoy GM events?
b) Yes, quite. There's always much more order and direction to them than regular role-plays...
9) GM events are random, cause otherwise it would be OOC. Do you prefer random events, or would you like to see a forum post announcing one?
b) I would like them pre-announced, so I can join in the Role-play, simply 'cause I always miss out because of my time-zone, which is just as OOC as announcing it - it's logical to assume my character would stumble upon these events even when I'm not plying him...
10) And at last, rewards. What do you think about the rewards in the events. Think realistic for this one.
a) They are good as it is. No wonder you don't get a suit of heavy armour from a mushroom collector.

7) No preference,
8 ) B,
9) A - Even though I always miss them,
10) A
(Nice idea to survey people in this way, I would like to say that using yellow text is hell for those who use the 'grey theme' and that 8 ) becomes 8))

*A lot more smaller than larger but, they should both be present.
**[Though, there should be larger ones with IC forum posts announcing them. If a large army was advancing on Hydlaa, I'm sure we would know about it IC a few days before they got there, for example.]

3) e)
4) c)
5) e) Other. That they seem detached from all the other day to day events that take place. Plus, they're really irrelevant as people usually forget what happened as the plot rarely contributes with enough to make things felt overall, and they usually (those I've seen) don't take advantage of things that happen in the past.
6) d) Other. Events shouldn't be done keeping in mind anyone's chance to win. They should be planned, a lot of outcomes should be predicted and they should allow equal chance to each of these outcomes. That's how Game Masters usually plan their roleplays in the ancestral Pen & Paper roleplays. It's hardly about winning or losing, more about what actually happens and how fun it is.

Well put questions.
I am UtM, as many of you know. As a character... well as at least twelve characters, I tend to play the 'normal' folks, more like NPCs than heroes. I also am an organizer of events, and a director from the shadows. Some of you have knowingly participated in events I have created and anounced. Other times you have been my unwitting victims, as the RP was never anounced as mine, or anounced as an event at all. I see events as a way to create, or add to the existing and evolving flow of your character's life stories. So, I answer these questions from that perspective, and will make a few comment of my own.
1) What time-zone do you live in?
e) GMT-5/6 (damn the daylight savings)
2) How many GM events did you participate in as a whole?
a) 0, But I have watched a few small ones happen by Harn's. Never been on for the 'big' ones, so can not comment.
3) What Type of events fo you prefer?
a) Role-play
b) Fighting, hacking and slashing.
c) Riddles and puzzle solving.
d) Scavenger hunt, collecting items and bringing them to the characters requesting them.
F) All of the above. An event can have aspects from all mentioned choices. By a) RP, I assume you mean a bit of drama/comedy/emotion/story/etc. All events should start with this, or they feel like pure fluff.
4) Do the events last to long?
e) other. The small events I have seen lasted little more than five to ten minutes, and generally involved a group of characters being lead around by the nose by a GM. They seemed short and forced to me. The large events last hours (I have heard), and if you get disconnected, you miss out on things. So, it is actually a hard question to answer. Both are actually too short for most players to get a taste of.
Anyone who knows my RP events knows they last weeks and months, not hours. But there is always a way to get caught up, and one can join any time without knowing the entire story.
5) What do you dislike most when it comes to events?
b) OOC intteruptions
d) the times when they are hosted.
e) b, d, and Other. The second a GM comes into the scene, they are often surrounded by people who want to be in the event. Something just feels off about this to me.
6) GM events are made so that the players have a 99% chance of winning. Is it a good idea to lower this chance, making it so that a player can loose?
c) Sometimes. Some events should be set up as 100% chance of completing. Others -talking from the evil side of the Moon- should be almost impossible to win. I did this in my RPs. Sometimes bad things happened that players could do nothing about, no matter how hard they tried. The Un-Common Cold was actually set up so that if done wrong, players would have lost terribly.
7) Small events always tend to be more realistic. Big events are always... big. Do you prefer Big epic events, or small events such as a woman in need of herbs?
c) A mixture of both. You know how much I like the huge story events that last weeks (though GMs can not do this yet), but I also like to set up small senarios with some of my unknown characters. Sometimes it is as simple as asking directions to a certain place, others it is running around collecting imaginary bugs *grins*. The point of these is just to liven up the place, and have a little fun. Ah yes, and since mushrooms are back, perhaps a certain Menki will be retuning to start serving up the 'Quest' again.
8) If you joined in one, do you enjoy GM events?
f) From what I have seen, small GM events seem too forced to me. I could have taken part, but seeing all the other players there made me want to stay back. They have the feel of /GMevent <stuff happens> /endGMevent. Too cut and dry, with no past, nor future to them.
9) GM events are random, cause otherwise it would be OOC. Do you prefer random events, or would you like to see a forum post announing one?
e) Both. Small events should not be anounced, and be done at a GM's whim. They should be pure RP, as if playing a character. It might even help if the GM used a non-GM character, so players did not know they were in an event.
Large events, on the other hand, should be anounced in a better way. Little hints and clues could be dropped in the game, or in the forum. I am not saying to say straight out that <this> will be happening at <this place> at <this time>, as that robs some of the mood from the event.
10) And at last, rewards. What do you tink about the rewards in the events. Think realistic for this one.
e) I do not know what rewards are given. Frankly, if a reward is needed to get people to want to be in an event, then the event has something wrong with it. In my mind, the event, and the story it creates, is the reward. Nothing more is needed for most events.
Many of the above issues could be solved with better GM tools. Controlling an event from single/first person(or even third) is a hard thing to do. GMs need the ability to control more characters at once on the fly, see what is going on in large areas, maybe even more than one map at a time, and have better tools for single use NPC triggers. That way, GM NPCs could help run the events, and events can go on even if all the GMs log off. Events -could- last weeks, then, and it would be far easier to step in and out of the event.

-
1) What time-zone do you live in?
d) GMT-1/ GMT-4
2) How many GM events did you participate in as a whole?
b) 1-2; 2 events focused on roleplay to be more specific
3) What Type of events fo you prefer?
a) Role-play - simply put, fetching items is a big cliché on CRPGs that is really tiresome, combat is not a good choice because the current combat system is alpha and also because it encourages Power-levelling. I simply don't like riddles and guessing games, and although I like logic puzzles, there is little support for puzzles on the sense that you need to combine/use certain items or operate something to achieve something like in those classic Adventure games ( Not sure if putting some aspects of Adventure genre is intended as well ), except if using /me , /my , etc.
4) Do the events last to long?
b) No, most of them last little, but I guess it is not easy to make a GM Event in the same way of a PnP Module campaign with a DM.
5) What do you dislike most when it comes to events?
e) Other: Most of events are or at least look like too much predictable, scripted and linear, I would rather a lack of linearity, more than one way to solve things, some plot twists and several branches of possibilities in the end of an event. My suggestion its that GMs reduce their control over the outcome of the event to the minimum possible as let the players "hijack" events for adding to it, and that "evil" characters do something to add some color to these events as well. As both the community and the GMs need to work together for achieving this.
6) GM events are made so that the players have a 99% chance of winning. Is it a good idea to lower this chance, making it so that a player can loose?
d) Other: Chances of success should be based on a realistic approach, as this is a RP based game, no big luck or big jinx. I would suggest that GMs have some command to read the stats and skills of other characters to define the chances properly. For example, a charismatic character would have a better chance of convincing someone to give him something without doing another errand, etc. Also each event should have higher or lower chances of success (Something that is also known as Difficulty level in other games)
7) Small events always tend to be more realistic. Big events are always... big. Do you prefer Big epic events, or small events such as a woman in need of herbs?
a) I prefer big epic events, a RPG should have more thrill than real life, I am with most and would like to have opportunities to roleplay some kind of "hero", although "A pen and a speech can be more powerful than a sword" and thus "heroic deed" not necessarily is something on the lines of "killing/destroying evil cult/invasion from Stone Labyrinths/ etc." Also perhaps a smaller event could develop into something bigger.
8) If you joined in one, do you enjoy GM events?
b) Yes, quite. Still I would enjoy a lot events that are less predictable on their outcomes and that are non-linear
9) GM events are random, cause otherwise it would be OOC. Do you prefer random events, or would you like to see a forum post announing one?
a) I like it random, just as Role-play is supposed to be. But they should happen more frequently
10) And at last, rewards. What do you tink about the rewards in the events. Think realistic for this one.
f) Some of them are unrealistic and questionable IC. Simply put, most of rewards on items seems to be OOC. The classic example is chain mail pants that someone won by doing an event. Why in the death realm would chain mail pants be so rare to the point only one person in Hydlaa has them? Items that are given as rewards should be considered IC as rare items, unless they can be bought somewhere else(And chain mail pants being a rare item IC is simply absurd).

Both a and c make sense, they should simply be realistic.

I cant, im used to the Gms giving me links to type out a,b,c,d,e Im sorry. I dont want to write that all out. Make the events a bit like the ojaveda invasion, and if you do a scavenger hunt put a sphynx giving riddles or a boss who will challenge you to a duel.

It's really easy, quote it, take out the unneeded top and bottom and then just delete the answers you don't choose.

Negative of me, but yeah, I dont Gm events much if it concerns working hard.

Why post in this thread if you're not going to take a few minutes to do what's asked, though? It's like saying "I'm too cool to do this survey; I don't care." Seems like a waste of effort, and then you get people like me bugging you about it.
Next time consider if it's really worth it.

b) 1-2
3) What Type of events fo you prefer?
a) Role-play
4) Do the events last to long?
a) Yes
5) What do you dislike most when it comes to events?
e) When everyone gets involved in one GM event because they know there's a reward in it for some lucky player. For example, one GM event had a Carak...Carkas...Carac...well...the death realm flying monster appear on the Plaza. Everyone swarms round this poor mage whos magic went wrong and everyone shouts at once. "Are you OK?", "Do you need help?", "Are you in trouble?" and "OMG! There's a death realm bat in the smithy!". It then takes about 15 minutes to work out what the GM wants from you and then...everybody runs away. But realisticly, not everyone in a 100km radius is going to drop everything and look for this guys antidote.
6) GM events are made so that the players have a 99% chance of winning. Is it a good idea to lower this chance, making it so that a player can loose?

1) What time-zone do you live in?
a) GMT+0/GMT+2 --- GMT+2
2) How many GM events did you participate in as a whole?

3) What Type of events for you prefer?
e) No preference. --- Any of the events mentioned is nice.
4) Do the events last to long?
c) Some of them
5) What do you dislike most when it comes to events?
a) All the walking
b) OOC interruptions
c) The length
6) GM events are made so that the players have a 99% chance of winning. Is it a good idea to lower this chance, making it so that a player can loose?
a) Yes, it increases excitement. --- It's about the story, not about winning or losing. But it's just like in a movie, when you expect a happy end, rescuing someone from the deadly claws of [insert thug/monster here], probably people expect to achieve that.
7) Small events always tend to be more realistic. Big events are always... big. Do you prefer Big epic events, or small events such as a woman in need of herbs?
c) A mixture of both --- But I'd go with long epic ones really which span for days or weeks even, in real life. They don't really need to start and end in the same day, although small things like clues and prerequisities can be given in a short timespan, by the way of mixing.
8 ) If you joined in one, do you enjoy GM events?
b) Yes, quite.
9) GM events are random, cause otherwise it would be OOC. Do you prefer random events, or would you like to see a forum post annoucing one?
a) I like it random, just as Role-play is supposed to be. --- Besides, consider this: a casual person in Yliakum needs help and and all of a sudden all the would-be adventurers just loom up around his/her place? Has to be IC and random to make it believable. As a general advice, try to think of the fun in the events, but also the target for them and the way it's presented. Just like UtM said, they need a background story, a beginning and an end which overcome that "feel" of suddenness.
10) And at last, rewards. What do you think about the rewards in the events. Think realistic for this one.
d) Some are good, some are not. tough question, dunno. --- Not sure about it myself, but yes, they should be as close to reality as possible, in terms of the rewards themselves (whether it's money or anything else), and of course... not all events need to have several winners.

Just would like to give a big thanks to all that participated in this seriously, it'll help the GM's and their events a great deal. You all are allowed to post for a little while longer and when we have enough oppinions I'll present you with avarage results and the plans on how we as a team plan to go about events after reviewing the answers you all gave me.
Thanks peeps! :flowers:

Thanks Proglin
I have no doubt you are going to use this information to make GM events better, I for one, have enjoyed a few of your pre-GM events and I know many others did aswell. It seems you 'get it' when it comes to events, not that other GM's dont :surrender:
Cant wait to see what you come up with :)

3) What Type of events fo you prefer?
a) Role-play
b) Fighting, hacking and slashing.
c) Riddles and puzzle solving.
(All three are good, in mediums. Not too much of any one, balance in everything, and all that. As a player, I don't find searching for items all that much fun (unless it's getting it from a person), and as Garon, scavenger hunts that don't promise large rewards would be OOC to take part in... for instance, helping a Wizard or rich merchant find something promises a good reward, but Garon wouldn't help some old lady without good reason--if that old lady happened to seem to be rich however...)

5) What do you dislike most when it comes to events?
d) the times when they are hosted.

6) GM events are made so that the players have a 99% chance of winning. Is it a good idea to lower this chance, making it so that a player can loose?
c) Sometimes
(Only when it's realistic that they would lose, for instance it's unlikely that they would lose a mushroom finding scavenger hunt, but it's more likely that they would lose a war)
7) Small events always tend to be more realistic. Big events are always... big. Do you prefer Big epic events, or small events such as a woman in need of herbs?
c) A mixture of both
(Epic events can be made realistic, you just have to have them few and far between, and have them easily accessable to all who want to take part, because of their rareness)
Cool If you joined in one, do you enjoy GM events?
a) A LOT!
9) GM events are random, cause otherwise it would be OOC. Do you prefer random events, or would you like to see a forum post announing one?
a) I like it random, just as Role-play is supposed to be.
b) I like them pre-announced, so I can join in the ROle-play.
(Depends. For Epic events, as I mentioned earlier, such as the rogue invasion, it would've been nice to have notice... I nearly died when I came to Ojaveda on a trip to visit Trasok and a shadow rogue came after me, it would make sense that ICly, Hydlaa would have posters noting the Rogue invasion and town criers spreading the news... some way to get it out to all players that "Ojaveda has uber rogues in it that will kill you if you aren't good at running away or really really really strong", however, for things like collecting herbs, that wouldn't really get town criers and the like)
10) And at last, rewards. What do you tink about the rewards in the events. Think realistic for this one.
a) They are good as it is. No wonder you don't get a suit of heavy armour from a mushroom collector.
(More events that give out suits of heavy armor would be nice, however, especially since the rich are much more likely to try to get someone else to do their work for them... the poor are much more likely to go and get something themselves then some rich merchant is)

2) How many GM events did you participate in as a whole?
I've been in a grand total of 1 - one of the first ones that happened. It was to collect x number of ores. After time passed, I sent the GM a /tell to see if it was still running or if I was just wasting my time. The GM didn't write back. I got the ore, came back, and the GM told me that the event had ended and he or she just didn't feel like answering my /tell. Thanks a lot.
They're never happening when I'm around, or somehow I end up "missing" them through no fault of my own. It's peculiar.
3) What Type of events fo you prefer?
No preference since I haven't been able to participate in enough to know.
4) Do the events last to long?
No clue!
5) What do you dislike most when it comes to events?
That I always miss them!
6) GM events are made so that the players have a 99% chance of winning. Is it a good idea to lower this chance, making it so that a player can loose?
First off, this simply isn't true. Of the events which I've seen, many of them had only a single winner of all the participants.
Secondly, I think failure should be a possibility but there should also be multiple quest endings. I gave some quests to Cha0s a while back as examples of quests with multiple endings.
7) Small events always tend to be more realistic. Big events are always... big. Do you prefer Big epic events, or small events such as a woman in need of herbs?
I prefer anything done well.
8. If you joined in one, do you enjoy GM events?
If it's done well, sure.
9) GM events are random, cause otherwise it would be OOC. Do you prefer random events, or would you like to see a forum post announing one?
This seems like a stupid question. Why do things need to be random to be IC? RPing is "random"? I must be misunderstanding you, because that seems like a really foolish thing to say. Roleplay doesn't need to be random.
10) And at last, rewards. What do you tink about the rewards in the events. Think realistic for this one.
They need to be realistic and they need to be fair. They should not give participants strong advantages over non participants.

3) What Type of events do you prefer?
a) Role-play
4) Do the events last to long?
No idea. I haven’t participated in one yet.
5) What do you dislike most when it comes to events?
The lack of prior notice that there will be an event.
6) GM events are made so that the players have a 99% chance of winning. Is it a good idea to lower this chance, making it so that a player can loose?
There does not always need to be a “prize”. Some events require a prize, a role play event can be rewarding on its own merit as a role play event.
7) Small events always tend to be more realistic. Big events are always... big. Do you prefer Big epic events, or small events such as a woman in need of herbs?
c) A mixture of both.
8 ) If you joined in one, do you enjoy GM events?
Not applicable in my case since I haven’t participated in one yet.
9) GM events are random, cause otherwise it would be OOC. Do you prefer random events, or would you like to see a forum post announing one?
I have to agree with Zanzibar on this one: I’m not sure why a forum announcement puts an event in the realm of OOC. An IC "role play" event does not necessarily have to be entirely random.
10) And at last, rewards. What do you think about the rewards in the events. Think realistic for this one.
No idea.
