Title: A sad new complaint.
Post by: bilbous on March 11, 2007, 11:52:47 pm
I'd like to complain about the people who think ridicule belongs in the complaint department. I understand that I was wrong to complain about the ridicule in the mining complaint thread but feel that my complaint was genuine and so I re-iterate it here. I would like to suggest that for every 5 posts you have deleted you get a one-day suspension. Having a post deleted is seemingly not sufficient punishment to return order to the forum. Sadly even such a rule is unlikely to be too effective as extra accounts are easy to come by and relatively few people have static ips.

Silly ideas get ridiculed... therefore we should ban people at a one day per five deletions ratio?

Further, posts aren't deleted to punish people.  They're deleted to clean up the forum.

New banning rules (http://hydlaa.com/smf/index.php?topic=27887.msg320876#new)

I believe that what Venge proposes here will be more than enough.
Small bits of ridicule aren't too bad aslong as it doesn't grow into something more.

When older members take it upon themselves to compete to see who can provide the most ridiculous hyperbole in reply to an innocently intentioned posting by an new member no matter how inappropriate that posting might seem, it does not provide a very welcoming atmosphere. Moreover it will tend to blacken the reputation of the game itself as some of these people will just leave and tell everyone wherever they go "Oh Ya, What a bunch of Putzes. You don't want to try that"

Now I  am an ornery kind of guy and I took my lack of welcome as an excuse to fight, heck, I argue with Zanzibar so much I might as well marry him! Other people are no so disposed. You want to pick on the people who have been around and shown a willingness to fight back be my guest but lay off the newcomers (even if you think they are just somebody familiar's sock-puppet.)

EDIT

I'd even make the 5 post deletion limit retroactive and forgive you 1 deletion per day served or deletion free upon your return despite the fact it would affect me. That way if you have 100 deletions you'd be gone 96 days and have 4 deletions left on your record when you were allowed back. Of course I do not think this will be adopted.

Then I guess it's a good thing stuff like that doesn't happen here!

PS is very welcoming ... the fourms are not .. matter of fact I post so little because of this. To bad, cause in other fourms I usually have one of the highest post ratings and post daily. I just read this fourm from time to time to see what's going on. If I find somthing I can comment on with out being yellled at then I will post. Heh  :P like this one.

tssthorn,

I hear that a lot from many different posters and it's something I hope I can change with time. I think we go through phases, almost seasonal in their nature - there are times when everyone is really friendly and welcoming, and times when people are surprisingly willing to crush each others' lungs. I think right now the main thing we can all do is encourage proper etiquette (http://hydlaa.com/smf/index.php?topic=22698.msg273553#msg273553) whenever the need is present. I do wonder if I will cross an invisible line in actually enforcing people to act nice ("I don't wanna and you can't make me!") but I do agree that a more relaxed attitude would be very welcome here.

*edit*

Actually, I can enforce acting nice...

It should be reciprocal.

And I wonder why the complaining for adding more rules when the current ones are being enough for the needs.

But I think this "Complaint Forum" may be considered as the equivalent of Windows' recycle bin on PS Forums

If that's the case, it is so done by the players - not by the developers.

As much as you might want to be the wicked step-mother, Karyuu ain't Cinderella. I am sure she and the other mods have better things to do than clean up posts that shouldn't have been made in the first place. I admit I go off now and then but I doubt very much I am the number one contender for the junk-pile king.

@ lordraleigh I think the complaint forum has a valuable purpose. I think the forum as a whole has the same. I try to make thoughtful posts but consistency has never been one of my strong points.

Hmm yes I certainly understand what you mean. This isn't to bad though I have been on a few forums where I would never post again ... ever. I know a few fourms out there where if you post i the wrong section just one time you get baned for the day, not very welcoming especially if your new to fourms as well.

Now you know very well I cannot point at those posts /me points at the cinder bucket beside the fireplace
So instead I'll point to this thread  (http://hydlaa.com/smf/index.php?topic=27431.0)as many of the quotes were for your benefit

No, not at all. Many people enjoy a good pun, otherwise Piers Anthony would not have written a bazillion Xanth books. I was just trying to make the thread educational at the same time.  :innocent:

I still think ridiculing people is bad form and not good for the forum in general, too much testosterone flying around has made it hard for me to get many good recipes to try.

I'm just saying that one sign of trolling is to make a statement that attracts attention or riles people up and then to duck out when someone asks for an explanation or proof.

This is not going anywhere anymore. Please refrain from jabbing at each other or I shall put you all in corners.

Somehow, I have a feeling that was more of a psychological tool: "You guys better watch it or Venge is gonna ban you!"

4 days later...
"Whuh? Someone call me...? ZZzzzzzz"
"Venge, that was four days ag-"
"BLAH! I'm awake, I'm awake, eh... just resting my eyes... I was... Zzzzzz"
"Ugh..."

Ahhh, how much fun it would be to moderate ;o)

I dunno K, what with my manopause requiring a manssiere, I don't think I fit in a corner anymore. One of these days, hopefully soon I'll learn to stop responding to nonsense. As for this thread it's usefullness ended at about two-thirds of the first page. I doubt anything more relevant is coming. It would be nice if we could lock topics we started when they get too far off track as some people see a becalmed thread as one in need of a mighty wind....

If something on the forums needs my attention, Karyuu has ways to alert me.

Deletions and Bans do not have to be done in real-time to be effective.

There is still some pointless back-and-forth, such as Zanz and Bilb in this very thread :-) but in general it is a lot better and I think the forums are better for it.

To be honest, I haven't noticed any difference.  I'm not a mod though so my attention doesn't get called to the problems before they get cleaned up.

Becuase, you know, I don't actually exist and I'm really just a split personality of Karyuu.   :P
