Title: Enforced reading of certain sections the manual
Post by: Derranae on March 15, 2007, 10:14:28 pm
I've not been playing Planeshift long ('bout a couple of weeks), but I've found myself helping people to do things, often the same thing over and over.
For example, I've been asked about 5 times 'How do I train?' While it's possible to explain this, it takes some doing, and invariably leads to demands like 'Well, show me where I can learn axe then.'
I think it would be great if summaries of some sections of the manual were included in the character creation process, to avoid repetitive basic questions.
Even if nothing else were included, how to 'level up' would be great, as whether it's desired or not, there will be power-levelers in the game, and it's better to avoid them asking questions all over the place.

P.s. hello forum!

Hello Derranae!

I've always wished that in order to create a game account, you would have to take a short quiz on basic game actions. People might complain, but they'd also be forced to learn things. Perhaps I'll bring this up again internally :D

Something's just occurred to me. If you want to make it less unpalatable to people, add small stat bonuses if they get it right. It'd convince me!

I don't think boosting stats based on a quiz is a good idea.

It is an OOC problem, and should be fixed by a solution that brings no changes In-character(Stats, etc.)

And anyway, unless the quiz questions are changed regularly, some people would have previous knowledge of them through friends that play the game, and it would promote Powerlevelling as well.

I don't think the point of this suggestion is to prevent "powerleveling." It's to enforce people to read manuals and know basic controls before they enter the game - which is what they should be doing for any application they install.

I'm not sure that people should read manuals before they enter a game or use an application. Many times these things are poorly written, focus excessively on the hype and leave much to be desired. I find it is usually better to get in and see what the interface is like and whether the developer's idea of ergonomics is at all similar to mine. The proof of the pudding is in the eating. It is good to have the manuals handy to refer to as needs crop up but I for one do not remember much useful just from reading a booklet.

Such a system as advanced in this thread might also include questions about the development as a nod to those MB/AB relics that are still around. I would hope the questions would be of a multiple guess nature so that everyone has the opportunity to learn the proper responses.

I agree with you Karyuu.  Not only will it help this problem, but may deter some of those who may be too immature to play a game based on RPing constantly.  [what kid int their right mind would want to take a quiz to play a game?]  It would test some patience.

Count my vote in for this one. The pre-game quiz test sounds awesome and it may even reward the player with some... skills maybe? ;)

I think this is an excellant Idea.  I know there is a bunch of people in game that are willing to help new players but must drop out of character to do so.   But if this was implemented I belive it would continue the rp in the game.
