There has be soooooo much whining on this that I get toothaches when I hear talks about it. Time to go to a dentist it seems, because I'm about to post one about 'em too!
MAP FEATURE IS IN THE GAME NOW!
Don't expect too much though. It's not an automap, it's a sketchbook, thus giving way for the a new skill - map making or cartography, call it whatever you like. That one is still yet to come, but I have a feeling it's going to be in soon.
And it's all thanks to Vengeance!
Where to get it? Sorry but that information I can't share on the boards. However, I can tell you that it's in the exact place you'd expect to find one. As a matter of fact the NPC who talked about them mentioned he had a few lying around. To be able to use a map you need to acquire one from him.
Features below:
Press...
F2 - To toggle map editing on and off
+ - To add new items, press the key.
\ - To add an endpoint (used for drawing lines ---- )
T - To add text
PgUp/PgDown - To cycle though items added (yes, you can change the icons and there's quite a bunch of them)
Arrows - To move items around, one pixel at a time
Mouse - To move items generally, or modify the endpoints on the lines ( ----- key bind: \)
Small possible bugs (not sure if they really are) :
- Can't move the Sketchbook from its position (locked in where it first appears).
- Map name is "Generic map". If I buy another one, it will be yet another generic map. Perhaps we should have the ability to modify the map name so that it appears "Hydlaa Map" for example?
- No "save" button. The map saves now only when the map editing is closed. Maybe it's not a bug, just the way it's supposed to work.
- If I move an item on the outside of the map, does it disappear when it saves? For example, I can create a small house, move it on the outside of the map, and it will probably stay there.
/later
After checking, it does appear to be saved even outside its boundaries, the small figure appearing translucent above the main screen. You can check this my moving a little house half in, and half out of the sketch, then close it and reopen.
For the sake of the game, please do not use them at this time due to an ugly bug (http://www.hydlaa.com/bugtracker/bug.php?op=show&bugid=2515).
-
Thats great of course, but i wonder:
Are all these keys customizable? Because it happens that all of these keys besides 'T' I have already assigned to something else and I rather change keys for the map making, rather these i have already set ;)

\\o// Great job!
This is one of the best and most usefull additions for a long time.
-
ooh somthing to play with, I got bored of making up stupid games using the goffel toe board.
-
Spoke to soon apparently .. all maps are being asked back for now. :P

Apparently I spoke too soon.

Ah so that's the reason why my map never stayed the same. Either way, I noticed all generic maps being replaced by Ojaveda maps and are uneditable right now.
Edit: Never mind .. they can still be edited.
-
Dont edit the maps unless you want your map to be the same as everyone elses all edits are global.
-
haha this global map thing is loads of fun :P
-
Yeah! Finally we can write letters! \\o//
-
*lol* I did the Oja map...didn't know about the bug...

Global email... CC: Everyone. Meet here -> for party. ByoB.

If anyone is interested, I have hand-drawn maps of Hydlaa and East Hydlaa (In Character). I plan to draw Ojaveda soon. They are saved as PDF files.

Such maps are not allowed on this forum - they are spoilers. We do not allow out-of-game maps with information on trainers, mining locations, etc. Please take those down from your site!
-
I humbly apologize for my error. I was just trying to help and it never occurred to me that they were spoiler material.
-
It could be worse.. I found a supposedly full guide to PS via google not too long ago (it was only about 30% complete though!! .. and the people who'd made it had stolen the maps that I'd made!! - very entertaining!!).
Thankfully that site is now down.
As far as I know though... you're okay to keep your maps, guides, spoilers, etc. for your own (and your guilds) use... just not publicly, and preferably under some sort of password protection is good.

Only because there is no way to control it.
Nice permission^^ as you put it.

preferably under some sort of password protection is good.
I actually thought that was a mandatory requirement.
-
I was under the impression it just had to be non-public.
But I also think password protection should be mandatory.

Drah, our guild has maps given to us by someone that was probably in your guild. We of course published them within the guild. We did not alter the maps however. So if you put a copyright or at least your name on them, it was not removed.
I believe in getting permission where possible. If you want to check the maps we have to see if they are yours, send me a pm and I'll send you a link to them. If they belong to you, then I'd like your permission to use them and will credit you in full.
I'd hate for you to think we stole from you.

I have a great deal of respect for this game. I really like all of the efforts to keep role playing alive. I have a friend that plays WOW and I asked him if people role played. His bewildered response was..."What do you mean role play?" I was in shock. Why is it called a "Role Playing Game" if you don't role play? Without role playing, it just becomes a MMOKATMG (Massive Multiplayer Online Kill Anything That Moves Game).
Thank you for correcting my error and not belittling me as a n008.
-
They are called MMORPGs, because this title sells better ;)

Having just picked up the two in-game maps, the Hydlaa map and the Generic map, I thought I'd bump this thread and ask for a status update. The Hydlaa map seems to to be static in that an attept to open it for editing received the "you will only damage the illustration" warning and the Generic map has "do not use this map ... GM Caarie" written on it. I guess that means it is not yet usable either.
I had hoped to be able to use one of the maps as a writing surface, i.e. inappropriately ;) but I guess the issues remain and these are still not ready.
So how is it going? Is it simmering on the back burner, boiling on the front or keeping warm in the oven? :detective:
-
So far the Generic map can be globally edited as you can see by the note. I personally think it is better to not use it till we get maps that each player can edit and share for a cost and not one map we can all edit and see what has been done on.
-
Fair enough and of course I just wanted it for passing notes behind teachers back ;)

If my character was asked if she had a map of the city to sell, and the offer was reasonable, I wouldn't block an IC reaction of my character due to an OOC arguable definition of what is a "spoiler". Although this immediately would block most of "n00bs" from such transactions(People may complain about what I'm about to say, but I think that the "helping n00bs" concept is in most cases OOC and poorly roleplayed on). Or is this a 100% OOC "skill" designed just to help the players behind the characters? ???
-
I worked on it before .018 but it went on the back burner when all the inventory dupe cheats came out. I'll get back to making it a "final" feature in a little while.
-
Considering maps to be drawn with ink, but anyone can delete them at any time...
will those Generic Maps keep that feature?
Would like to suggest, for anyone to discuss, that Generic Maps may be fully editable by the maps owner, but by others only by adding stuff the most!
