Title: external stats - web based
Post by: JaseyWasey on March 21, 2007, 02:59:30 am
I have an idea concerning the stats and skills,

as a guild you are urged to have a website for that guild, somewhere to chat to guild members and so on, which is all very good, and at current we can tap into the planeshift site and see who is online, I have written a script on our guild site that takes the information into an XML parser and only shows members from our guild.

What would be great though, is if we could have some kind of XML or RSS based stats/skills system, so we could pull out stats of an individual player into the website. and maybe out of the guild system too. at current we have our guild levels on our site, and this has to be updated manually, so if someone is premoted, we then have to login to an admin panel on the website, and update the players level there, if we could pull that from an RSS feed it would be much better, and if we could do that with player skills and stats, again, we could then show those on the guild site - I also don't think everything should be shown, and I don't think anyone should have access, for instance, it should maybe only show info for members of the same guild as you, so that this way, you can only display information you want to display on the guild site, otherwise you may get people looking at your stats, and then trying to challenge you because of them.

Its just a thought I had, so that we could maybe display information about guild members on guild sites without having to manually update them all the time, as some things go up quite quickly so the guild site would be outdated in no time atall.

i understand that Numbskull, this is why i think maybe there should be an option in-game of "export my stats" and also why I don't think it should show everything, just some things, for instance Joe bloggs is good at crafting swords, he has level X in swordmaking, so other guild members know who to goto if they need a weapon, and bertie bassett is good at making ingots and stocks, so sell him your ores, i don't think there should be any stats available that would make the player vulnerable to attack from another player, for instance HP level, and sword/axe/dagger skill etc.

I also don't think it should be active for all players, and by default for a player, should be set as "don't show my stats" so if the player wishes, then their stats could be exported.

the main issue on this, is when there is multiple servers, and a few thousand "active" players, within guilds that all want their stats exported, the server load on that might not be too healthy.

It was more of a though than anything else, just to see other peoples views on it.

We had this sort of thing in the past. It basically was a top ten list in the various main stats. One of the most un-RP things in PS since the crystal hunt. Obviously, like any such system, it instantly degraded into a ranking platform, with players competing for the highscore.

So my view on this basically is that I'm grateful that this horror is gone, and I definitely don't want it back in any form at all.

Lastly, PS is also striving to eliminate numbers from the game (as the CC shows), so this would be the opposite of the goal.

OOC measures for IC activity are bad, specially for character stats as they encourage powerlevelling.

But perhaps having an internal "guild power" percentage or value, once there are actual ways in the game system for guilds to acquire power in all forms ( Economic, political, public influence/popularity ) would be interesting to keep things on track. Although to keep this measure as an IC value characters would be more or less aware of, it should be a very innacurate measure instead of numeric values(something like for example unknown/known/famous/notorious for fame or poor/well supplied/wealthy/mogul for economic and powerless/influent/decisive/gray eminence (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gray_Eminence) for political power and hated/untrusted/neutral/popular/loved for popularity or lack of it ). But I dunno about it, as sadly this isn't an (empire/business/etc)-building game. Still having such ratings would be interesting and give some guilds more reasons to exist and progress.

Added:

Of course in secret organizations, being "unknown" while being a "gray eminence" would be much better than being known, thus the lower values on the spectrum would not necessarily mean an inferior "guild".

Absolutely horrible idea.  It would place emphasis on levelling up as opposed to developing your character.
