Title: PlaneArt - PlaneShift Fan Art
Post by: Josellis on March 31, 2007, 07:04:26 am
PlaneArt (http://planeart.byethost7.com)

After a while of development, my website is FINALLY OPEN. You can visit it here (http://planeart.byethost7.com). The URL is this:

http://planeart.byethost7.com/

you can also visit my website here (http://www.planeart.tk), however, it contains adds. The link is this:
http://www.planeart.tk

---------------------------------------------
Old topic was:

INTRODUCTION

Early last year (I think), I made an attempt to create a website related the PlaneShift, however, I was unfocused, and the website had to real purpose. This year, I am going to try another attempt to create a website. As you would have guest (from the title), it will be to host PlaneShift fan art. Of course, there is already a fan art forum on this site, but it is just one section out of a whole website. What I would like to create, is a whole website dedicated to PlaneShift fan art. I would also be able to host projects (like the Klyro's city project, which seemingly died).

PURPOSE

As mentioned before, the website's main purpose will be to host fan art project. It will also have categories of fan art such as Characters, Maps/Areas, Objects, Buildings, etc.

Although I hope it will have extensive amounts of art and ideas, it will remain a FAN art, and the PlaneShift team is not obliged to include any of the art work on the website. However, having said this, I am hoping the PlaneShift team will be able to get ideas from my website.

QUESTIONS

Now here comes the purpose of this post. Although I have already planned my website, I would like to know what YOU would like to see on it and also what you would hate to see.. Any ideas/suggestions are good.

I am also looking for a good name for my website. I have an idea of what I would like to call it, but I would like what you want.

Thank you

I would like to see a non planeshift related section for art unrelated to planeshift and a tips section. How long do you plan to take making this website? Can we see any of your previously made websites to get an idea of what to expect? Maybe something like Paletteshift for the name?

I would recommend using Drupal to create the site  -  a CMS will drastically lower your site development time.  My PlaneShift site uses drupal: http://vaalnor.mine.nu/psdoc (http://vaalnor.mine.nu/psdoc)

There are some great modules for integration with gallery2 and the like so I'd think this is a viable approach which in the end will prove easier to manage.

Also, I am not going to give you a sneak preview of my website. It's a secret ... :)

My website has a section with tutorials, help and people could also share model, drawings, pictures. I guess I could create a section for non-planeshift design, but it wouldn't be quite as big as the PlaneShift section. (A bit like the hydlaa plaza in this forum, maybe a bit bigger).

I have never used Drupal before, so I might just try it on this computer. If I like it, it will take a little longer to create a template, and set it up.

Also, My website should be ready in 1 to 2 weeks.

Please remember that if you have maps up they can not be maps with the npcs on them or you will be required to remove them from the site as they are spoilers

Caarie, the website will be about fan art. So some fans might want to post maps that they invented, with NPCs, shops, quests, etc. if they want, but it would still be their own creation. It will not be a map of the current areas within PlaneShift.

If you are planning on hosting tutorials I might suggest not to - if you have tutorials written or to write, we could collaborate.  My site is totally tutorial oriented and used by many in the community.  We could keep tutorials there and keep your site for fan art once its been created.  We could add links to each others sites.  It just doesn't make sense to have several sites in PS with the same content.

That said I can't force you to give me your tutorials :D

Let me know if you need help with Drupal - its fun and very powerful but can be a bit tricky to get setup just right.  I've been using it for a few years now and know a bit about it so I might have useful knowledge for you.

My website is mainly fan art orientated, with some tutorials, but I'll be glad to put a link to your tutorials.
Narure, my old website, as said in the first post, didn't turn out well, and the website is down now.

Also, I would like your ideas on what you especially want, and especially, on a title for my website, I only come up with names that I don't really like.

so your website, is really just a forum? I think people were expecting a proper website.

Yeah i was expecting a deviant art style thing just for planeshift art. Or maybe somthing abit more unique. I'm in two minds whether to use it though becuase i think there is still a better chance of my art being view here. (which reminds me i should clean up my art thread)

well, you can always make feedbacks on what you would like to see. But I was mainly thinking of it as a PLANESHIFT fan art website, not a PlaneShift FAN ART website, if you see what I mean...

Also, a forum is much more interactive then a simple website ...

Well I think it's a good idea, and I think we should support this.

I'm in two minds whether to use it though becuase i think there is still a better chance of my art being view here. (which reminds me i should clean up my art thread)

Well of course it will, every community project starts small, it's up to us to make the website worth viewing. And there's nothing stopping you from posting both here AND on the fan art website.

I would agree however that in order to draw more attention, I think a little more than a forum is needed. I'm thinking maybe a CMS like Joomla. I'll PM you with an example Josellis.

Just wondering, how do you find the style of the website?
And also, what content would you like me to put on?
and how will people "share" their artwork?

by the way, A forum can be also used as Content Manager, I'm trying to create a "Knowledge Base" on the localhost, however, it becomes fairly tricky (and would have taken way too long). But because of the lack of interest in my website I stopped the development.

Also, register, and start posting :) It will continue looking empty until someone posts, and it's only then that it will look much more attractive :)

I like the style, it echos the planeshift forums in someways, making it seem fimiliar, which is good. I don't think you can really add to it. If you're going to stick to the forum idea then perhaps you should create a showcase forum, for all completed works to be posted, and where you're not allowed to post comments.

As for sharing content, perhaps you should make use of the creative commons licences, just a thought.

creative commons license??, is that something like GPL or GNU? or whatever the term is ...

Yeah it's something like GPL, just a little more dynamic... have a look http://creativecommons.org/
