Title: How was your first hour ingame?
Post by: Excentric on April 21, 2007, 08:45:43 pm
Mine was quite fun...

After logging in I entered the starting town, unsure what I was supposed to do I just walked around and after a while I came accross something that looked like the sewers so I entered it.

After walking around in there for 5-10mins I encountered my first mob, "goblo" or something, so I tried to kill it. I wasnt sure where my hp bar was, but from the chat I could clearly see it was owning me so I desperatly tried to run but somehow I failed to do that and I died.

Now I respawned in what I now know is called the "death realm". I wasnt sure what I was supposed to do in there but I just followed the only path I could follow and managed to get to a dead end without falling into the darkness.

Now I was like "wtf" a dead end? You can imagine I was getting a little irritated so I decided to walk into the void. I surely thought I was gonna die again but instead I saw my character kept trying to walk into a wall, I tried to press nearly every key on my keyboard but nothing worked, my character was still happily trying to walk into a wall.

I was getting a little bit angry but then I saw "help" button on chat interface, I explained my problem and someone told me to type "/unstick" so I did. Yay, I had no idea where I was now but I could move my character again!.. well thats what I thought.

In front of me I saw other players walking into a big opening so I decided to do the same and started moving forward but unfortunately I got stuck again. I have no idea why, there was nothing in front of me that could stop me from moving forward so the only option was "/unstick". I ended up on the same spot but I was still stuck so I typed "/unstick" again and again and again but it didnt work. Nothing seemed to work so I tried the help function again but no answer came...now I was getting really pissed and I kept spamming "/unstick" with the keyup+return combo. After like 30 times the game started running a bit slow and looked like it was about to crash so I stopped and came back to my senses. So I thought maybe logging off might help so I did, I also restarted my pc because my mouse had gone wild in the process.

I logged back into the game to find my character was still stuck, I asked for help again but no answer. Now I started to explore the ingame help function looking for something that could help me. After a few minutes I found out about a new command that could help me "/die" with the description "use this command if /unstick does not work".. . Ok cool, so I killed myself and I was back at the beginning of the death realm.

Ok I thought, im gonna try look for help from another player to get me out of here... like 10 players passed by me as I was asking for help but they didnt even stop. So I got the message and started walking to the dead end again where I saw players jumping off a bridge so I did too. Anyway to make it short I finally managed to get out of there after falling into thin air a dozen of times.

I ended up in the same town, went to the sewers again, attacked a smaller looking creature "rat" which killed me again and I logged out.

Is this game supposed to be like this or is it just me?

I'm sorry that you haven't begun with the best experience there.. :)

PlaneShift is a game in open development, only at version 0.3 at the moment. Features are incomplete and there are many things on our To-Do lists, so it can be quite the test of patience sometimes. That's why we have lots of guides and information both on the website and on this forum, which we recommend you take a look at before jumping in and trying to guess what button does what. Always try to read the manuals first, especially if a game is a work in progress.

Escaping through the Death Realm becomes easier after time - you'll reach a point where you could almost do it blindfolded ;) It's very simple once you know the way, although I do understand that it can be challenging if no one around you stops to guide you out. There's no problem with just following other players out.

Read through some of our guides, figure out the interface and controls, then give it a try again :) It will be better.

It's very easy to die in game when you are new. If you made it to the sewers before dying you did better that I did at first. I died almost instantly (I fell of a ledge and died). However it gets better with time. You just need to learn what to avoid, give it time it will get better.

It's just you.

Aaaanyways, my first hour.

Let's see, I got online and shouted "I'm a newb, help me" somebody replied "Do you really want that to be the first thing you ever say?".

I went and talked to them, and they explained the basics, which, at the time, were right click crystal, left click hand icon with the optional left click crystal /greet before it.
The rest of the hour was just talking with them, then finding Nilaya trying to scale an absolutely flat wall (tower in the plaza) and chatting with her for a bit.

(Karyuu, Illysia, look at thread title.  Please, try to stay ontopic :P)

My first hour was spent wandering along the bottom of the death realm and looking up to see if I could find some stairs that went up. Not to mention marveling at the Carkarass stuck in one of the bases of the structure. It was fighting me from behind stone and it was winning!  ::|

Always happy, have everything I want <.<

But yes, you have satisfied my need for ontopicness :P

Steuben: I loved the caves there, so many fun times **pokes somebody to remind them**.

I just wandered there in confusion, felt from a ledge and my first(now forgotten even by me) character died, as I thought that the "Death Realm" was a place from where there was no turning back(both in game and Settings-wise), I deleted this character, uninstalled Planeshift due to frustation and went back to Neverwinter Nights and FPSes. 1 month later(not so sure anymore, perhaps more... I remember a weird day last year when character models were turned into monsters a little after the time I created my account. I thought it was a server-side bug instead of an event due to Halloween :P) I returned and created a new character(a dermorian), making money was tough, I deleted him and made another with mining skills due to it(a klyros). I got bored from the  :beta: fighting and mining systems a long time ago, now I just roleplay and none of my characters has reason to pick up people to fight as well, so I just push their relationships, and I am looking forward for the time when soontm from certain features comes.

I ran around for a bit, found my way to oja road (which was where the BD road is now...).

Fell, died.

Fell in the death realm, found 2 others wandering around down there, one of whom had been stuck for a week, apparently.

Eventually figured out the "help" tag, /died, found sewers, killed rats with bare hands.

I can't remember very much.  I can't remember any of it, actually.  But the music from the character creation screen still has this weird effect on me, and it was definately a part of my first hour with the game.

I remember dying and not being able to see because I still had my old monitor.  My solution to the death realm was to remake my character a few times.  Then I found my first guild leader, and he taught me how to mine for platinum... but it was mostly exploring, and the music.

If I recall right, my first hour was spent with Drey in Oja killing rats for golden falchions. I think i still have set of those somewhere.  Unless they got wiped at some point.

My first hour went quite good I think.
I chose an Enki character and started in Ojaveda. I ran arond a bit and explored the town, then I tried to talk to some NPCs and that was a bit strange, cause they didn't answer (I didn't figure out how to use the NPC tab). Then I found a rat and was quite happy killing it some times with bare hands. When it got boring again, I ran around and then found the first player in game, Meowkun. He was also new and we talked a bit (OOC, of course, about the game and so on) and I showed him how to kill rats. After some time, we met another player (can't remember her name), who showed us where to sell our hides. Then they both had to log off and I was alone again. I found a hammer on the ground (for crafting) and decided to use it as a weapon (which makes no sense, what I know now, but later I got two daggers for it) I left town and saw a rouge. I tried to talk to him and he sent me to death realm wit one strike. I got stuck in DR and gave up after a while, but the next time I luckily found a friendly player who showed me the way.
Well, probably that was my first 3 hours, I think :whistling:

::) Aahh! My first hour, I remember it sooo clearly:
I said "Hi" to a fellow player, I had my first conversation (about a month later I fund out people call those 'OOC') after he was gone I attacked my first rat!
I felt glorious, the way I defeated him with bare hands! But I got too cocky and attacked a rogue... Blackness, the next 15 minutes I spent trying to kill the Death guardian. I called him names and got my first warning (looking back I feel ashamed  :-[ ) I got back by following a lizard and the next lot of days I spent killing rats, rats, rats and doing 2 quests. I handled myself pretty good I think  :innocent:

Actually, other than dying from excessive fall damage, these stories sound pretty good to me.  :-)

It is going to be a bit bewildering to enter a new world and not know anyone or anything about it.  That is half the fun of playing imho.  I think PS could use a bit more guidance for new players, but overall I think these stories are consistent with what I've experienced in other games.

Perhaps disabling 'fall damage' for the first 10 game hours could help a bit... although being a bit unrealistic of course.

Of course it would be account-based the game hours measure, not character-based.

They already removed fall damage, basically.  It used to be that you'd die from falling three feet!  Just jumping on a spot would cost you half your HP points.

I just nerfed fall damage some more.  The fall threshold is now 5 meters, and dmg is reduced overall by about 30%.  Let me know how that goes and if it eliminates the most stupid fall deaths for newbies.

Is it supposed to be possible for a newbie to jump down the well? The thugs were one of my favorite trainers. It has been impossible for the last few weeks. I just managed it now but I hit an obstruction half way to the first platform and took 2/3 damage, if I had not I think I would have died.

hi  :)
i just started last friday and i spent the first hour getting external errors and game lags/freezes (i read somewhere in the forums that it probably was caused by my video card, or lack thereof  ;D)...

anyway, i got to play for a straight hour without interruptions and i spent it searching for the tavern (harnquist wanted me to bring him apples). i wandered through town and i found myself in the sewers where i killed a rat and ran away from a fanatic... i got bored and decided to try my luck searching for the tavern. the game suddenly crashed again so i had to stop. maybe i can try again this week...  :)

ahhhh, the memories. I remember spawning, then in moments I discovered the Tavern. I was quite pleased with myself so I decided to run back down the stairs to see what other fantastic things I could find, imagine my suprise when I ended up dead at the bottom and quickly discovering the Death Realm. Then that consumed the rest of my 1st hour online. Well, signifigantly more than my 1st hour actualy  X-/

I started playing this game quite early on and it was quite unusual to log into a MMORPG for the first time and not immediately start killing rats :), although they fixed that later!

There were gems to collect back then as I remember, and they were far and few between.

My first post shall be about my first experience with this game.

After downloading the game, installing, and starting it up, I was rather annoyed by the fact that the game wasn't fullscreen, as was taller than my screen was, so the bottom bit got cut off. Well, I started the character creation, decided to go the custom way, found that this game already had a lot more depth than I realized, something I enjoyed very much so. Not to mention the music was strangely enjoyable.

Once in-game, my computer lagged massively. At the best getting 3 frames a second, it would still often lock completely for about 10 seconds. I recalled glancing over the recommended system specs of a 2ghz processor and a gig of ram, which my laptop barely meets. I decided to deal with the horrible gameplay due to lack of decent computing power, and just continue on trying to play. I wandered around the town for a little, and then found a pathway out that led to some large tower where I wandered around until I eventually got too lost to find my way out. I attacked a monster that looked like it would kill me thinking I would go back to town, and ended up in the DR. I spent a few minutes in here until I got completely stuck, called for help to get unstuck, not knowing about the /unstick command, but it stated that there was no one available. I let the help request sit for 10-15 minutes and just exited the game.

At this point, normally I would've just gave up, but I decided to read the forums and see what the game was really about. All that I've read, the game being in development, and the very heavy RP-based community just makes me want to keep giving this game a chance. Well, the next day (this morning) I read more on the forums and decided to attempt to let my laptop try. Conveniently I found the settings and went fullscreen, which helped a little for my wee laptop, but gameplay is still shotty for me. I decided to start a new character and at a later point get my first out of the death realm. I logged in and spoke with the NPC smith, whose name I cannot recall, and asked for a quest. He wants some steel, and this character I wanted to be a merchant type, but I have no money to buy a pickaxe. [e sad. I wandered around until I found the sewers, killed a rat, rather happily, and went looking for more one-eyed beasts. Every rat after the first, I attacked, and then suddenly stopped attacking and couldn't start again. Got lost in the sewers for a while until I found the exit, went back into town.. wandered... and exited.

Went back to reading the forums and here I am... I know that's far more than an hour, but oh well. I am probably going to read the forums to continue learning about the game, but not play it as much, as my computer cannot handle it. I may have to wait until I get a job and can afford to build myself a gaming rig to try to play this again.

Well, I was pretty interested in the game, a friend had showed it to me via a role play forum which I was quite active on. Made a dwarf, and began wandering about. I don't remember a whole lot, I got lost in the plaza... Watched as people went by not noticing me mutch at all. But then I came across a diaboli on the other side of hydlaa (Near the diaboli spawn point) I asked him for directions (keep in mind I was a role player before hand, and still role played through all of this, not once in ps had I been out of character without brackets. Kudos for me eh? ;)]

This kind diaboli asked if I was a 'n00b' which I replied, "Well if thats what a new commer is called then yes I am. (at this point I had not read the forums or the yliakum history so I didn't bother saying where I was from.) He showed me to the sewers, which I was more then pleased to find... Killed rats with my bare hands, and for some reason Saved up trias to buy a three rivet shield... (I figured i could use a bit of defense ;))

From here on out things got hairy... I died, and in the Death realm I was like a fish out of water! My computer was naturally dark, and I couldn't see the stairs that led out of the death guardian's chambers!..... I tried at it a little, took small steps (remember I was basicly blind)

I kept moving until I had unknowingly fell off a glitch point, yes, I was now on the very bottom of the DR! Although I did not know this, and fumbled around, somehow believing I was on the right path to the exit, every now and then I saw a pillar, and it had some light near it, I ran towards it swiftly, encountered a carkarass and killed it on the skin of my teeth, I also met some other lost souls, all were too busy to chat...

I gave up on planeshift for a loooong while, I was bored with it and went back to my RTS and TBS games... as well as my role playing forums.... but then my sister saw the game, and wanted to check it out, she was sooo interested she copied off the history of yliakum from the main site and read over it well, obviously this attratced my attention too! I really enjoyed the story of it all, and took an interest, I even picked PS up, at last though I decided to change characters, I delted my stonebreaker, and made an enkidukai.

This enkidukai could argueably be my first real character, I trainned him well, and even learned via a new friend I made how to lighten up my monitor! With my monitor lit up I could navigate the death realm with relative ease.

Today I have retired to a simple citizen of Hydlaa, a hard working Ylian. Though if it wernt for reading the history of Yliakum I might not have decided to pick up the game again. And as of now, I have no intentions of leaving planeshift!

(Yes, this is a bit more then my first hour, but it is my first steps in yliakum. :))

I wish they had logs back when I started...I would love for nostalgia sake to go back and see who I talked to first and what my first words were.  I remember that we all spawned in the same place by the statue and did so in mid air.  My first 15 minutes or so was just hanging there as I looked through help to learn the controls.  The lag was staggering.  Once I got the hang of that I went all around Hydlaa to learn the layout of the city.  It was all on a flat plane back then.  Exploring an unknown world was the best part.  I knew I just had to keep walking and sooner or later things would start to look familiar.

I met a Ynnwn who showed me crystals.  I wish I could remember his name, it was Japanese sounding and started with an M.  Then I met a fenki named Savarin who showed me how to climb to the rooftops.  I couldn't do it at all at first, I kept getting stuck under the ledge.  Boy did that change.  Ah the days of no fall damage and MB were quite special.  Later that day I met another fenki named Karyuu who had started a few weeks before I did.   :D

I learned about PS from an article in a Linux magazine and decided it looked interesting and worth trying out.  My first hour in game was pretty good actually, I did end up in the death realm but I followed people out slowly after wandering around for a bit, most seemed as lost as I was but I eventually made it out. I did learn it was better to follow the people who moved with purpose, though running through death realm is not the easiest thing.  :whistling:

Other than that, I met a lot of interesting characters who were very helpful to a new face in town.

I've been here just over a year now and I don't intent to leave any time soon, if ever.

My first hour was very nice, perhaps it helped that this was my first ever mmorpg. Anyway, I spawned in Ojaveda and walked around a bit, marvelling at the scenery and /tell'ing a friend of mine who had also joined. I couldn't understand why I couldn't find him untill I realised he was in another town. After a while another player, Nuthedie, came up to my and started talking to me, I quickly got the hang of RP and we had a pleasant chat. I was enjoying myself so much, but I didn't notice the Rogue coming up behind me.

Nuthedie shouted "Beware!" and next thing I knew I was in Death Realm. Nuthedie kindly /died and came after me. He told me he didn't want to show me the way out yet and that I must try and figure it out on my own. I wondered around Death Realm in awe, I was really very impressed with the way it was built, and the fact that I didn't know where to didn't bother me at all, because I was enjoying the scenery so much.

Eventually after much wondering about I spotted another player going the right way and when I saw where he went I thought to myself "Sneaky buggers!" and followed him. After a quick experience in the black nothing, I /died and went back the same way, after that it was smooth sailing to the end. When I got back to Ojaveda, Nuthedie had to go, so I decided to try and travel to the other town and find my friend. At that stage the Ojapath wasn't so long, but I was still nervous, seeing trepors and rogues. When I reached Hydlaa my jaw dropped, I was like "woooow". Anyway, not much more to tell. I found my friend, who eventually quit PS and never came back... I, on the other hand, persisted, and I'm still loving it.

I remember my first hour in-game. I was very confused and didn't know what to do. I started asking around for help and Monk obliged. He bought me two swords, showed me the sewer, showed how to navigate the DR, and also taught me a little on how to RP. I also witnessed the Dwarven star vs Dwarvesbane war on my first day, a huge battle outside the gates of Hydlaa. The rest of my day centered around killing rats if I remember correctly...

I did get stuck with my first char and tried to use the /unstick command but it didn't work so I did use /die.
And now I was in the death realm, I couldn't get out so I created a new char.

And this is where I am right now, I'm still looking for my first quest but I can't find any.  :-\

no complaints really..  I spent a bit of time reading guides and posts from others to see what they had done wrong..   so already a couple hours in game, have NOT managed to die yet, and have killed a few rats...    I know this is a total RP game, but, in the starting city, an overhead map, or even just a crude drawing with a legend explaining what characters are where, what they will buy/sell and what quests they give would be an immence help, and may keep a few more "noobs" around longer. Having said that, ive enjoyed the scenery so far and am looking forward to seeing more of the game.

There is no starting city.  Some characters start in Hydlaa, some characters start in Akkaio (then move to Hydlaa the first chance they get).  There are actually a number of people who are pushing for a town just for new players.  A small town would be good anyway just to give some contrast to how big Hydlaa is.

Untar wandered into the city as a young, innocent , and somewhat odd elf with a high level of empathic powers. He paused as he walked past two men talking in the road, not five minutes after entering the town.

The wind told him the first man’s name was Cadoras, which seemed odd, as the man stated, “Cadoras is no longer here.”

The Menki the stones said was Satayne looked at Untar with a disturbing gaze, which the elf returned shyly. Satayne then looked closely at Untar's ear as Cadoras gave a greeting.

Untar asked, “ Sir? Is there something wrong with my ear?”

Satayne response made Untar shudder, “Mmmm, they look so...tender.”

“You would not bite a simple poet, would you?” Untar asked with worry in his voice, causing Satayne to shake the impulse off.

“No,..of course not…” Satayn responded, just as Cadaoras asked, “Poet?”

“Oh yes.” Untar answered as Satayne continued his thought.

“…No more than I would a bard.”

“Oh dear me,” Untar said quikly, “A bard? Not my worthless self. Just my words and a few scraps of paper is all I have.”

“You are a poet yet cannot sing?” the Menki asked.

“Words.…“ Untar breathed, his eyes looking upward, “That is where my heart resides. I wish for no more.

Cadoras said, “Hmm, no. The heart is here.” He taps his chest. “But you’re funny.” he continued with a chuckle.

Untar was confused by the nature of these two, and continued trying to explain, “Ahh, but to give life to a word. Have you never done this?”

Cadoras reaction was unexpected, poking  Untar's ears and stating, “You look funny.”

“You startle me sir.” Untar said. But Cadoras  seemed confused, so Untar asked, “It is kind or ill to poke ones ear?”

A few more words were exchanged before Cadoras and Satayne strayed off on their own business. Untar did not seem to notice much, as he had taken to listening to what the stairs had to say. In wandering about ten minutes later, he ran back into Cadoras again.

“It's the one with funny ears,” Cadoras said in greeting.

“Oh dear,” Untar said, reaching up to touch one, “I have funny ears?”

Cadoras nodded with a murmur to confirm.

“But, I have had no other.”

“Yeah. But they are funny.”

“I am glad they bring you a chuckle.”

“You are nice.” Cadoras admitted.

“A simple poet must be, or who would he give his words to?”

The two chated for a bit more before a lovely Enki approached. The building to the right told Untar her name was Maelgwyn, while the building to the left said she moved as if dancing, thought she just walked. Untar had to agree.

“Hello,” she said simply, “How are you?”

Inspired, Untar answered in prose. “Hello, my dancing lady. You move like liquid music.”

“You are funny Mister Untar.” Cadoras said, .

“ I only can say what I lay eyes upon,” Untar said simply, and meaning it.

“It would seem you have some competition Cadoras.” Maelgwyn said with a grin.

The conversation drifted off, and Untar once again found himself wandering. What an interesting first hour in his new home. He hoped all the following hours would be just as fascinating.

The only talking rocks in Planeshift are the Kran.  I also doubt that Untar was your first character... maybe Untar was a time traveller with both ESP and schizophrenia?

Casting my memory back...

I'd read the player guide whilst the game downloaded, agonised over my character (though the Kylros looked cool!), and was totally bemused when I couldn't get a quest out of Harnquist (this was back when there was only *one* quest in-game, and the advice in the Player Manual was to ask Harnquist for a quest. Found out later that at the time, it'd been disabled for bug testing...)

Found the sewers, killed some rats, bought a sword, tried to kill a teffie, and ended up in the DR. It was much easier to escape from in those days.

That's probably the first few hours actually. That character got lost in the last wipe. My first hour after the wipe (and after time away from the game) was a lot less confusing.

My first hour.

I made a Dwarf called Yalfi Kellp on my first go. I decided that due to my limited patience with these games and general lack of skill that he will be an Apple Merchant.
I seem to remember logging on and thinking...'Oooh...this is different'. Believe it or not, I had actually read the roleplaying guide  :o
Of what I remember...I walked around picking up apples...and started trying to sell them around the Plaza. Then...I think it was Xillix that came up to me and told me that I must go on a dangerous quest for her to find Rathien at the Bronze Doors for her along with her friend. Xillix then payed me 2000 trias in advance and told me to naff off to the BD. As a newb I was completely disorientated and confused by this sudden request from a complete stranger and did what any self-respecting n00b would do...and log out with the money. :D

If you read this, Xillix. Sorry! Even if it was about a year ago.
