Title: A new game
Post by: Garile on April 25, 2007, 12:20:36 am

I have a friend who is trying to make a game from scratch al by himself. So far I think he is doing terrific. Would never have thought he has only worked on it for just over two months.

Anyhow he is looking for some people to give him feedback so who better then nitpicky people from Planeshift who know where to look for bugs. *giggles*

Have a look and let him [Kronon] or me know what you think.

*disables images* Hmm. Unreadable text. On the join page, "these rules" should be distinct from "about". I spent a few moments going "What rules?"

There's no background behind the text after submitting the form to create an account... :/

Right, not supposed to be critiquing the website :P (it's also all done with tables, and the submit button on the contact form is missing a >)

Ahh...There's no manual!

On this page-
http://www.voidofspace.com/omnipedia/tech.php?id=5
"there" really should be "their"

Game looks interesting. It would be nice if there were more detailed pictures for the buildings and surface, though. .. And a manual. I still have no idea what I'm doing.

I know what you mean about the manual, but seeing he is still heavely updating every week or two he hasn't made one yet ;)

PS: Kronon said he has a friend working on the pictures on the planet so might be updated soon (no TM)

This is actually quite an addictive game, although slow to play. I've been checking back every day to set stuff building. I wish I knew how well I was doing.

The wallpaper he used is something I could probably get off of google. He needs to fix it in place so only the boxes of text scroll and not the background with it. The background also has the website he got it off of written on it, it's in red so it's hard to catch, but it's writing nonetheless.

You are third in the rankings so seem to be going well Kiirani ;)

PS: changing the number of the game-id to see the other games is what I useally do, but there is a score menu at the start ;).

It reminds me of Master of Orion (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Master_of_Orion), of course different concepts on a same area(4x space empire-building), but that one was a great game and a true classic.

P.S.: I feast on Wiki Links :P

Fans of Master of Orion should seriously play Galactic Civilizations (http://www.galciv.com/)

There is a certain amount of players who can join a game depending on the size of the galaxy I believe. When enough players have joined or there are no longer any free systems the game closes for new players and a new game is opened.

You sound like a "Momentum-style" one, not the "Builder" type(I usually stick with "Hybrid" play on my Civ and AC games).

You may beat one or two, but nothing can beat the army-building power of a well-developed infrastructure :P

hm. It would be nice if technology research were saved, so you didn't have to re-wait for it to go when you switched for a while. It would make more sense, too, because I mean, switching to something else doesn't lose the research you've already done.

That way if there's 25 minutes left on something, and I want to go to bed, i can put it on something else overnight, then switch to the 25 minute one in the morning.

Queueing technologies would be nice also.

Glad to hear that people like my game:).
Suggestions are alway welcome.
The game should be more like a mix of pax imperia 2 and ascendency but ofcourse still different.
I must say that I like the ideas that have been posted here on  research, so I've put it on my todo list:).

PS. The first part of the manual is out. It is still a bit  :beta: but atleast every one will know what they are doing;). You can find it on the main site.

From old Civ

What would you go for here:

Infinite Colony Sprawl(Smallpox) or "Largepox"?

Quote
# Smallpox (spox)- Freeciv term for Infinite City Sprawl, see ICS in general glossary, although 'smallpox' usually refers to building lots of cities with no city improvements very close together, while 'ICS' usually refers to any tactic that relies mainly on building more cities rather than improving existing cities.

# Bigpox (Largepox, lpox) - Freeciv term for strategies involving improving a few cities and building in depth rather than expanding. Bigpox games are games where the rules are changed to favour such strategies.

I am wondering how to speed up Tech research ??? Once you have 4 or five planets, wouldnt research time be reduced as long as you had 3 or 4 research centres on each ?

I like your idea Kiirani, it makes perfect sence.

A question to my fellow space heads :P Does anyone have something other than a ceramic hull yet ?
Title: Re: A new game
Post by: Garile on May 08, 2007, 01:17:32 am
well sceince is determined from how many science points you get from the science building, but ofcourse as you advance the technologies will require more sciencepoints to be completed ;)

You'll have to ask Kronon for the specifics ;)

Crystal will get you the new hulltype Laragorn ;)

Possibly, I'm not really keeping track.

Are sensors supposed to be able to view the surface of other people's planets?

And wouldn't it be neat if we could colonise suns XD

Why is it that the build time is so long when you have items in cue?

example; lets say you are building a research centre and select a mall to be built in the next building sector. The build time shows something like 3 days and 21 hours, but if you cancel and select the exact same sector and building type, the time goes down to a more reasonable 3:41:00

Anyone know ???

The systems doesn't like you?
More seriously, I think you pointed directions to a bug:(.

"Fly school" has been added to the manual. So if you want to know how to move your ships, you can read it there:).
Combat will be next, you will only read that it's automated:P.

okay, so im a bit confused about the technology part.  Once you have trained the technology, does that mean you have it always, and if so, where can i see or check that?  If not, then I have just finished training my first technology, and it has disappeared from the technology tab, and says none selected now.

Check the "Omnipedia (http://www.voidofspace.com/omnipedia/)" of it to know what new features each tech adds to your empire. Once it's researched, you have all its benefits.

Hmm. Problem with a tech that provides new buildings coming up is I don't want to waste my money on more of the current ones, as they'll just be replaced. I also don't like leaving my planets idle.
Title: Re: A new game
Post by: wither on May 10, 2007, 09:03:55 am
personally, i think this is a great game, but i think that technology research needs to be sped up some, 8hrs to research one of the earlier techs tends to make the game a tad bit boring, other than that, im liking it

Drifting Offtopic: I have to be glad I didn't have a anti-ad banner-blocker for the first time in my life! A banner in Void of Space has shown me a MMO game I would definitively put above anything else on the genre :)
While browsing some banners, I stumbled into this (http://ng.neocron.com/)...(Definitively not mainstream, but up to my tastes)

A (PG 18+) Cyberpunk MMOFPRPG, with real combat instead of *yawns*  "kill mob a 1000000x, click on tougher mob b to attack it with your now levelled character" of crappy MMO(RP?)Gs, where you can conquer territory like in a huge "Battlefield 1942" game(And that from some reviews, is some kind of  "Deus Ex MMORPG" (http://www.gamespot.com/pc/rpg/neocron2beyonddomeofyork/player_review.html?id=285903&om_act=convert&om_clk=gsreaderreviews&tag=readerreviews;continue;5))... if I only had the money and bandwith for lagless netplay...

For your luck(or lack of luck), I don't, otherwise I would probably say: goodbye Planeshift!

P.S.: Of course I would like some serious reviews of this Neocron first, but after reading this one (http://www.gameogre.com/neocron2review.htm) I got both happy and sad as well as I can't afford it

Some of the stuff that got me really willing to try it:

Quote
A detailed political system, that you can choose to be a part in or not, gives way to warring, allied and neutral factions, supply raids, corruption and just about as much complication as you could come up with in a real political system.

Quote
The HackNet is a kind of matrix, a three-dimensional virtual cyber-net where hackers fight security programs, viruses or other hackers with different types of software...
- Last time I saw something like this was on an old Genesis RPG named "Shadowrun" and on "System Shock 1"

Perhaps it would need more refinement, but MMOFPRPG is a definitively promissing genre, and have much more appeal to me than MMOTRPG(Massively Multiplay Treadmilling Roleplaying Game)...

I really loved this quote from an user's review :D

Quote
"Definitely beats seeing elves (sp) and killing rats!"

Quick turn back to topic:

If you didn't notice already, Void of Space is a great game for the casual gamer, you don't need to spend too many continual hours playing to succeed, 1-2 hours per day, or the occasional minutes on several points of a day are more than enough.

that game looks good, but ill hold out for the server myself.

As for void of space, i did get that it was casual, its just i have all this spare time with the servers being down, lol, its all a bit sad really.

I am wondering the same thing. The scoring system seems to change almost at random sometimes. A new colony should increase the score, and sometimes does, but it ussualy drops ???

A breakdown of the score tally would be nice to see ;)
Title: Re: A new game
Post by: kronon on May 10, 2007, 03:34:49 pm
The score system is pretty simple. It uses (income, expenses, science income) * factor (i). I know that the scores could be calculated "more precise". But I haven't had time for that, so I came up with this simple system.
Must say that the score gives a pretty good indication, but it may bounce a bit.

Hmm. My score in game 7 is way down. I've been given the smallest system possible :/

I did, however, get Automation in game 4! After a few days of researching :/

For scoring system, shouldn't there be different categories ? (Here's where the fact that I'm a huge age of empires fan comes out)

It's just I think what about a military score, an economic score and a technology score. That way getting I guess the "full game experience" achieves a higher score than just colonising a heap of planets and building buildings on them to raise your economic income (which is all we're scored on at the moment)((So far, from my exploration of game 4, this seems to be Pestilence's strategy.. Still looking though)).

Things like size of fleet, number of planets colonised, average level of buildings, yes, economic income, too, KILLS/INVASIONS - LOSSES, Technologies researched, with perhaps a bonus if you've researched all. Systems explored, players discovered..

Edit: Ehhh?! I dropped 200 points!

I like that idea Kiirani ;) I am not sure how hard it would be to impliment ???  but it would give a much better look at ones progress.

I have seen your home system, and it is kinda small :D but you are doing very well for such small start. I am still trying to figure out why our scores sometimes drop for no aparent reason. Maybe our extra income becomes to low, and we are penalized for it ??? I dunno

It isnt to hard to regain your score this early in the game. You can see that in game 5, I dropped right down after over extending my finances :( but I came back fighting :P so rest assured, you will rise to the top in no time ;)

Any more thoughts on the image?

I see that some people want to know why there score drops. I don't really know why, but I can show you the score calculation.
Quote
science * 9 + income * 4 + outcome * 6

The idea behind this is the more load you can carry the stronger your empire is.
All in all thats true, but when you colonize a planet your costly colonizer is removed from your outcome.
This gives score drops.

Yup Yup

Colonizers give you a pretty big score bonus i the beginning so if you colonize planets your score drops, but ofcourse it's an investment for when that planet gives you more income ;)

Ahh. So the more money I'm spending, the HIGHER my score is. And here I was thinking I needed to bring a lot more money in before starting to build ships.

Sigh. I'm at a point in game 4 where I really need to leave everything alone for a few days to make more money. (Heaven forbid I drop below 14k.. k? )

I had those couple of days where I couldn't play. Anyway, it's in the earlier game. I think I have about 8 in game 5.

Too bad money can't be used to rush building like in some Civilization games...

I agree with the money issue. I'm trying to find an sollution for it. Funny thing is, at the beginning there whas an opposit money problem.

*Off topic* My computer works again!  \\o//It was broken for almost a year now.

Can citizens grow on colonised planets? Like, mine seem to be stuck at 3.01k. Why don't I end up getting more (and more..) as I build more and better buildings? Buildings that don't require citizens to operate wouldn't add to the count. That would be nice.

Thats a good Question, I just noticed that as well. Only the original planet is at 5k ???

Another thing I noticed is the time it takes to build anything, Once selected everything is rounded up or down (usually up) to be in sync with the other items being built.

Does everything work with the same timer, or is this a glitch?

I might not play much for a couple of days. Got other stuff going on.

Actually the game is tick based. The timers are just there because people don't want to calculate the nr of turns back to the time they take.

I've also added new ship images.
Hope you all like them.

Here is a development screenshot of the planet display.
Please tell me what you think about it.

I had a guy who would make images for me. Bus as it is taking a real long time for him to make some. I have created some temporary ones.

P.S. I know that building 27 and 28 are in orbit;).

My balance keeps sliding down into the negative even though I have a positive income, bug or player influence?

Balance = Income - Expenses. So you will get an negative balance when you have more expenses then income.
