Title: Combat System
Post by: lilmonkeyguy on March 12, 2003, 12:03:17 am
Yes. I think that the combat system should be controlled by the character so its is NOT turned based but more like a first person shooter. That way, levels don\'t matter in who can win but personal skill does. Level should only determine strength, speed and stuff like that. That way, the game will be NEWBIE-Friendly.

I would like having a fps style to it so the peroson with the best artifact does not womp. Instead the game should be much more balanced across the board (no god items) and personal skill should determine who wins the fight.

I heard the combat system would be like the ole d20/D&D type system, which is kind of bland, and getting old for MMORPGs already, but It really wont stop me from playing.

Gothic (http://www.gothic2.com) had/has an incredible combat system, which really relied on the player to perform moves, isntead of just pressing a button, and letting your character do the work.

An advanced system of that would be great, but I doubt anything like that will be seen in MMORPGs for a little bit, as the d20/D&D system works fine.

AC2 had a nice advanced way of the turn based style, though thats about all the game could be recognized for, besides its pretty graphics.

*Sarcasm* Yay! Twitch system!

In fact, what you are discussing has already been discussed. You can find it here (http://planeshift3d.com/forum/thread.php?threadid=2504&boardid=11&styleid=2&page=1#18) .

Also, if I read correctly, personal skill matters. That is NOT newbie friendly. Newbies are not exactly good at twitching their fingers, and are new, which means they do not know many things.

By the way, their will be no \'levels.\' It\'s called experience. At least I think so.

I\'m all for FPS controls so that having actual skill helps alot, it gets boring when you just keep un clicking a button to hurt somone and the person who either is \"luckier\" or has spent more time clicking on some beasts wins.

A FPS stlye would also make the game more life like and as the other person put it newbie freindly so that I can just load the game up and have a chance of winning a fight against a character who has more skill points

Is FPS controls not just clicking a button?

All I can remember playing UT2k3, is pressing the left and right mouse buttons to fire. The skill came in dodging, and making sure you dont have terrible aim.

That would work well for Archery, and your characters skill would then effect how well you could do that(i.e. reload, how far you shoot without going out of control, running and firing)

But for wielding a sword that way... its just simply clicking, and clicking... and clicking, strafing is good, but its mainly just clicking when it comes down to it.

you guys have to realize that it would put a huge strain on the server ur sum\'n if they put in fps.

I for one want this, but it would probable be to much for people with a 56k or atleast thats what i hear anyway.
And who knows, maybe they\'ll make a different version on a different server with fps/fighter instead of this turn based stuff.

No, no turn based...I made sure to ask that when I first came here

turn based is probably the most boring fighting system I have seen

on second thought... scratch what i\'ve said.
I\'ve actualy played endlessages and it was a flight sim/fps genre mix geared toward 56k users...

If you guys want twitch skills and FPS-style fighting, you are on the wrong forums of the wrong games.

hitman, i think the word you\'re looking for is \"lame\"  I have seen some very impressive turn based games, but i have no idea how a MMORPG would incorporate true turn based combat. wouldn\'t it be more like structured real time?

Jessyn

EDIT - how\'d I get to five yellow stars, I had three before this post.  huh. :)

The last thing we need in this world is another \"turn-based\" RPG game.
This isn\'t Dungeons & Dragons, nor is it Final Fantasy! I can understand if they used it ten years ago, but it\'s time to aim for something new. X(

I don\'t think that I\'ve seen, or heard of, a turn based mmorpg. Maybe I just don\'t look around enough?

Rubies of Eventide had turn-based in early beta (they sent me the cd) i\'m not sure what it is now...but I quit playing because it was so boring

**sets turn-based combat on fire**

Whenever I hear turn-based, I think strategy games. I haven\'t looked at Rubies of Eventide, I\'ll have to check it out to see how you could even have turn-based mmorpgs. Doesn\'t sound like it would be very enjoyable though.

It\'s really horrible, which is why they might have changed it...but sometimes you were fighting like 8 thugs and had to wait around 10mins just to get to your turn.

I never said it was turn-based.

How about a Combat system like Morrowind that worked well and as seeing that so many people have made the Plane Shift = Morrowind Online assumption it couldn\'t hurt to make em happy
Title:
Post by: cmhitman on March 14, 2003, 04:54:35 pm
then what is it?
I mean logicaly you\'d have to have an fps style if its gonna have projectile weapons.
Title:
Post by: kyp14 on March 15, 2003, 03:28:14 am
That\'s what I thought but if they use a system like Morrowind that works with projectile weapons + swords and includes strafe and jumping to dodge things but still keeps the RPG stlye combat feel

Well, I\'ve said this many many times before, but if you want real-time do NOT use a FPS view in a Fantasy game. All melee fighting will be completely useless. Use third person, and incorporate a sort of fighting game style in. Like say, forward-forward-punch will make your character pull off the \"Twisted monkey bolt\" move that you earned by gaining, say, 500 experience. Besides you get a better view of any magic spells from that view point, and archery is still possible.

I heard they already have a combat system though.

Peace 8)

Morrowind was also single player, not massive multiplayer.

the view should stay toggle able like it is, because of dungeons and stuff where u need 1st person view because of the walls.

but a good comabt system for me is some mixture between morrowind for archery and the diffrent attacks and something like DAOC/EQ where u get styles and u r able to make combos out of them...

I agree it would be cool to have this a fps type game. If not that then have it a 3rd person type and you can go to first person for ranged weapons.

I do like the idea that your own skill should play a part in determaning the outcome of a fight. Without that, its simply just run up, point, click attack, sit and wait till it dies, and move on.

Much like neocron. It was a fps game, and you had to have some skill to accualy kill people, but your character strength also played a large roll in the outcome as it should.

Post by: Vengeance on March 15, 2003, 11:35:53 pm
You guys, this is not a first person shooter.  Nor is it going to be.  I\'m sorry that is what you seem to like, but we are not building one.  There is also going to be no car racing, no air-air combat and no space invaders component.

MMORPG has RPG in it, which means your stats are what most heavily affect your outcomes.  There will be tactics and strategies of course, so some players will be better than others, but that is not going to be because of faster reflexes, more practice or better ping times.  It is going to be better assessment of when to use what spell, knowing what armor resists what types of weapons and spells better, etc.

I was serious before... if you don\'t like this you should really go find a free open source FPS and make suggestions on their board because they are irrelevant here.

Vengeance, we\'re just saying that we hope that the planeshift team will make this like Earth & Beyond where you control the character during fighting instead of just giving commands. Cool down.... we saw all your posts and I apoligize for those of us who ignored u.

Hey sorry to, I just get abit carried away being a Dues Ex freak and all I can\'t help wanting to mix genres its just this thing I have kinda got, like when you go to a party and mix 10 different fizzy drinks into the same drink trying to find somthing that tastes nice :D

I too am a friend of fps style, becuase I want to have the control over my chars movment and doing especially in such an important thing like fighting. For me its the most important part of a mmorpg so not haveing control there wouldnt be good. And a fps system might not be newbie friendly but I prefer a system where u can turn around things not only by ur chars skills but by your own.

well, it appears the combat system as already been decided and that it won\'t in fact be a first person shooter, so just chill and deal with it.
