Far from normal :) Can you tell us what graphics card you have, and perhaps check if you have the most recent driver version? If you're not sure where to see that, type dxdiag into the Windows Run command and take a look at the Display tab.

I had this same exact problem when I switched platforms but it was so laggy that I couldn't get a shot.  I had logged in just inside the BD area but I don't think that was the cause of the problem because when I suicided it was the same in the death realm.  I also noticed the texture abcence at the spot where you pick the character to login with. I tried again... and I noticed an alert at the top of the very first load screen when the game starts up. The alert said "Hardware acceleration not found".

Then my previous post would apply to you as well - check your graphics card and driver version.

“No Hardware Acceleration” usually means you either:
1.) Have very outdated drivers for your graphics card
2.) Have a very outdated graphics card, or
3.) Have a distinct lack of anything that could be considered a graphics card

Solve this by:
1.) Updating your graphics card drivers from the manufacturer's website
2.) Buy a new graphics card, or
3.) Buy a graphics card ;)

I'm having the same issues, same error message on top of the initial screen, saying I don't have hardware openGL acceleration.
(if you're wondering: windows vista, 2 gig ram, ati mabolity radeon X1600 intel core duo processor T2300 1.66 GHz)
and I can say that having the latest drivers doesn't change anything at all, I checked it out, found out that I had all the latest, tried to run ps again, but gave the same result... (btw, there is another topic concerning this very same problem (http://hydlaa.com/smf/index.php?topic=28876.0), in which it was suggested to edit a file r3dopenGL.cfg in the /planeshift/data/config folder, to turn off the texture compression, that didn't work either...)

edit: the error I'm getting in the first screen is:
Quote
crystalspace.canvas.openGLwin:
no hardware acceleration!

To find drivers for a Nvidia GeForce graphic card, you should look at http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp (or on the homepage of your specific graphic card manufacturer). Current drivers are ForceWare Version 93-94 for GeForce 2-7 series, or version 158 for GeForce 8.

To find drivers for an ATI Radeon graphic card, you should look at http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.html (or on the homepage of your specific graphic card manufacturer). Current drivers are Catalyst Version 7.6 for modern (9###, X###), or 6.11 for pretty outdated generations (like that 7000).

Looking at any generic 3rd-party website is usually not more recommendable than looking at the graphic chip producer's site, because you never know how old those other sites are, and if their "detection software" for new driver versions is really so much smarter than your brain, when you select matching options on a web form.
