Title: Easy Hacking Loophole
Post by: Ahriman on June 22, 2007, 02:18:20 am
Just a few days ago I saw a dermorian running at a very quick speed. It was NOT lag, I could see his animation clearly, walking about 5 times my speed. No stuttering.
I hope I won't get in trouble for this, but I tested a program called "Speedgear" on PlaneShift for about 3 minutes. I successfully speedhacked the game without any difficulty. Of course, I didn't continue doing that!

There should be a hacking resistance in PS. I don't know how to implement this, but it would be useful. Programs such as SpeedGear, CheatEngine, etc. should be banned.

Phew, when I readed this I thought that it was about another duping exploit (http://www.thenoobcomic.com/daily/strip249.html).  :sweatdrop:

It's unavoidable... to make an exception to my personal rule regarding ther Complaint Department for the 2nd time.

If you didn't get it, what I mean in a less than serious way is that it is entirely impossible to make a game 100% cheat-proof, but it is possible to deal with the cheaters properly.

No system is perfect but some are much better than others.

For example, there was a problem with cheaters using SpeedGear and CheatEngine in WoW for slowing down the buff duration, so the buffs lasted longer. This has been fixed by moving the buffs on the server side. If you visit SpeedGear and CheatEngine forums, you'll see a bunch of cheaters whining about how useless those cheat programs are with WoW now.

Of course, Blizzard constantly bans accounts that use bots for power-leveling and so on. With over 7 million subscribers, you can expect that there will be a lot of cheaters in a game like World of Warcraft, so making SpeedGear and CheatEngine users whine about how useless those cheat programs are shows a lot.

Move as many critical things to the server-side as possible to avoid rampant cheating.

What kind of loser do you have to be to cheat in a game that has no winner?

To Cheat in Planeshift is like ..........well you get the point
It is like cheeting your self out an experiance of saying you did it your self with out help of any kind
It is sad to think this game is too hard for some that they have to cheet or exploit the system
shows the Intel of some people
Besides what does one gain from doing such?
a bad reputation in the community
"Thats something i always want to get" /me being sarcastic mildly

There are already measures in place to prevent 'speed cheating' such as running faster than is allowed, etc.  I'm not sure whether these options are currently turned on in the server and being monitored by somebody, but its definately in the code.  If you have the name or a screenshot of who was doing this you could contact a high level GM about it.

Granted, none of us would think to do this, but that doesn't solve the problem.  Its a fact of online games that people will try to cheat.

I'd agree, But then again, Some cheaters do it because they are jelous of others, If someone had better armour, they would cheat to get the same without spending time to get it properly.

Could Paladin be tweaked to catch this in any way?

I know it apparently was designed to (among other things) catch unusually rapid increases in height (to catch jump-velocity exploits) and had just assumed it would catch this type of cheating too.

I'm guessing SpeedGear tells Planeshift that more 'ticks' have passed than actually have, effectively speeding everything up in the client??

Maybe there's a way for the client to compare apparent 'ticks' with the local system clock to detect if the game is being deceived in some way.

I might be wrong though, I'm just guessing how it works. ;)

Palladin does catch high velocities. No idea if someone watches those reports though.

Nothing like cheating at solitaire to make you feel a part of the world of people.

*massively multiplayer* solitaire!!!  :-)

Yes, PaladinJr does monitor these things and logs them, but nothing is looking at the logging right now.  One day, those people will start getting auto-banned and there will be much weeping and gnashing of teeth, I predict.

hehe it would indeed if autobanning would be implemented now. Just imagine a bug makes people run faster then normal. Everyone is running around so everyone would be banned *smiles mischievously at the idea*

As for now winner? Ofcourse you are w inner. Not a winner of the game, but a winner of respect and a winner of less annoyance probably and the winner of the feeling to have outsmarted everyone else. Don't say thats just sad becuase I remember the Toda bug well and remember just how many people were using it. I know I even tried it just to see how well it worked.

People enjoy having an advantage and many will use an advantage they know to be a bug if presented with one. I believe we had a certain littering action not to long ago that should have reminded people of that.

 :innocent:

wel honestly i think it was nice that this fellow or whatever took the time to go and find out about it so he could report it. a lot of people would jsut have taken advantage of it.
at least he had the decency to mention it.

and it mightve been old news but obviously it wasnt to him, and id never heard of it either before. so then its not really such old news after all.

and your signature is sweet :)
