Title: For your Amusement
Post by: Radiant Memphis on June 22, 2007, 11:51:24 am
Here is a new funny/not so funny topic. Video game addiction: A new diagnosis? (http://health.yahoo.com/news/176635) As a mental illness...pa-shaw that's silly. I agree most with the last statement. This one ranks right up there with the funny Lunix (http://www.adequacy.org/stories/2001.12.2.42056.2147.html) letter floating around.
"You could make lots of behavioral things into addictions. Why stop at video gaming?" Brody asked. Why not Blackberries, cell phones, or other irritating habits, he said.

Well they are not called crackberries (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CrackBerry#Nicknames) for nothing ;)

And don't forget we are supposed to get 'violent' by Video games, as from 'movies' and 'metal'.
Anyone heard of "manhunt2" being banned from the UK?
First they say it's addicting, then it makes people violent.
You know what made me addicted to violence? those people  (jk, I can be nice to them  Cause my granny is one :P )

Mostly I think it's because 'those' people would 'like' to see 'everybody' do as they do, if 'they' don't play PC games (or console whatever) then the 'others' shouldn't too.
>.> It's all about control! <.<

Not video games as a whole, but I don't think we should ignore that in fact there are World of Warcrack Junkies and the "Evercrack (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/8/88/Evercrack.jpg)". What I don't understand is why something as boring as the level treadmill became so addictive for the leet audience.

P.S.: Got two damn good spell checkers for both my native language and English(US), so I won't commit too much grammar mistakes anymore for the nitpicks to complain about :P

Wiki on "Game Addiction", but of course, focused on the MMO"RP"Gs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Game_addiction)

Actually it is more of a "gaming isn't mainstream" question. Nobody raises heated discussions about gambling and card games(I mean poker, blackjack, not tragic: the garnering :P ) anymore, or about alcoholic beverages, because they were more or less "accepted".

It's not, imo, the leveling that's addictive - more progressing your character through the various stages of the game, finding/exploring new stuff, perfecting techniques killing new bosses meeting new people. I don't get why people call it an addiction, its a hobby some people play sports... i play WoW. I also don't get the whole "RL before the game" crap that people chat. WoW is part of my real life, its something i enjoy doing and choose to invest a lot of my time into. I also have some great friends i've met through WoW whether we're raiding or just all sitting on TS listening to socky's bad jokes it's great fun.

Last night i spent about 7 hours running about in WoW with my guild in a raid that finished at about 2 am, is that addicted? just bloody brilliant fun tbh.

I know I don't make much sense but its like half three and i cba to explain it better but what is basically comes down too is "I like WoW I play a lot of WoW, I'm right and don't care what others think"

Yes, I often get the uncontrollable urge to shift to feline form, grab my swords, and go out to hunt down and kill a tefusang to the strains of an Ozzy Ozborne tune.

Sorry people need to get a grip,  I got a lecture from a work buddy about FPS shooters and how they incite violence etc.  He came to work the next day with a black eye it seems he was "sword fighting" with his 10 yr old with wooden swords when the boy got him in the head,  so who is instilling violence in their kids?  BTW my kids barely get to play on the computers,  they do basic point and click paint by colours and thats about it.

Oh and no playstations xbox's or nintendos here either.

The thing that i dont understand is why its the video games. Maybe your life is ruined becuase you have no self discipline...
I mean id love to play planeshift all day, everyday and into the night but does that mean that i do? no...it means that i play when my RL allows me to have the time...and when the servers are cooperating  ;) i just get sick of people that bust their butts to find anything and anyone to blame for their problems but themselves.

You know after reading the "report" again, it makes me wonder why they haven't said such things about sports as well. I have seen people just as obsessed and sometimes violent over sports games or teams as has been purposed with video games. Of course I suppose sports are to well publicly accepted and liked to even shutter at that though. Of course here in Pittsburgh, Pa. in the U.S. ask any real Steelers/Pirates/Pinguins fan if this is a drinking town with a (American) football/baseball/hockey problem and most will laughingly agree that it is. This may well just be a local thing though; still a funny notion none the less. This (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OnEMs6jlRfo) and this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=68GPPl7ETIc) is what it looked like when the Steelers won the last Super bowl near where I worked. Notice the riot gear?

:Note foul words and such:

lol this better be fake how in the world of crack addicts can they accuse a game for nerds problems.
"my son shot himself cause he was playing a game"  heres an idea DON'T LET YOUR WATER HEAD KID PLAY WITH GUNS! >:(
tards i swear if we think about this logicly, how did the kid get a gun?
why would the parents allow a gun around their water head, suicidal kid?
heres a idea instead of blaming games try blaming the real problem, the parents. they are the ones that let their kids get like that, it doesnt happen over night it takes along time to get in one of those states, but when the kid was being quiet in his room the parents just ignored it.
