Hail all,
Recently there are some discussions internally about age dependand content, features, the age limit for the GM team etc. and we've been wondering how many people there are at which age.
This poll will run for 60 days. You can see the results after you have voted. You may change your vote after you submitted it, in case you hit a wrong option.
You don't have to post any explanation for your voting or anything like that. The results of this poll are used only for statistical purposes.
Thanks for your (hopefully truthful) vote and with kind regards,
Your PS team

between 21 and 25
between 25 and 30
OK I'm 25. Wich one should I chose? ;)
-
well as I am 21.7something I chose 21-25
and yes the poll is confusing in that respect.
-
hmm yeah chose 25-30 aswell seeing the age isn't going down *smiles* but still ;)
-
27 here. Born in 1980. Year of Mount St. Helens, Night of the Twisters, and Reagan taking office as President.
-
OK I'm 25. Wich one should I chose?
Read it like that: 21<X<25 OR 25<X<30
and take the numbers as fixed limits, not as span.
In your case that'd be "between 25 and 30" then.
-

-
Hmm the only problem with this is the people who will end up lieing about age anyways. I can definately understand why its being done but always remember that age should not determine maturity ;) .
By the way im 20 but I wish I was still 5 ;D
-
18....and a half... :D
-
16 since 10 days ago!
-

Go late teenagers!
17 :D
-
I'm 15. I started playing at 14 though, which I assume would be useful information as well.
-
14
-
i'm on the wrong side of thirty. so all you yungin's can get off my lawn.
-
17...still...but won't stay like that long :P
-
23 WHOOOO!!!!!
Bring it on you youngins!!
-
33 yep I am on the down side of 30 as well
-
What this poll is telling me is that we can include PG-13 content, but not R-rated. :D
-
players below 13 must ask their parents before voting :)
-
I'm still amazed at how many of us over 30's there are, I was reasonably sure the balance would be to the under 21's
-
No no, there are a ton more people over 21 than under. It's just those under 21 are double or triple the awesomeness of those over ;)
19, if you're curious.
-
* Fozzie sighs
I'm 41 ... :woot:
oldest so far ...

Who chose the bins? As is, the bins produce a bimodal distribution which probably isn't accurate. By definition, the bins should all be the same size within the area of interest. I guess in this case, judging by bin size, the area of interest is the teen/tween population? If I were to make the bins, I would make 5 year bins from 0 to 100. That way I get a clearer picture of the true distribution. Then bimodal distributions (or other statistical anomalies) would actually be of interest.
-
if it makes you feel better fozzie I'm 43
-
23 :)
-
I answered the poll for myself. I want to point out though that there is another person in my household who plays under another account, and that person falls into the "under 13" category. We do have some yunguns playing PS, and they may not be looking at the forums.
-
and they may not be looking at the forums.
Their loss/me laughs ;>
-
13 and a half..guess I'm the youngest :P
-
Oh boy, I am so old ... it is the first poll in this board I found in time to vote (missed the first Guild Spotlight)... But 32 should be a good age to found a family, right?!
And now I understand the "quicksilver" character of Pirill! :P
P.S.:
What a shame Bobuzz isn't here anymore. He'd beat you "so far oldest" easily.
-
30
-
Well, I'm old enough to vote here and post things :D I think that says a lot :P
-
uhm i put 19 since ill be nineteen in early august....
tee hee hee
that counts right? :flowers:
-
22 and going strong. [I sell knives for the summer! Awesome Job.] PG 13 stuff sounds good to put in here.

Age is not the optimal criterion for a level of adulthood. Unfortunately, just the only (quickly) measurable...
-
I am 16, will be 17 in December
-
23, although after a good tennis match I feel about... 57 or so.
-

In the MMORPG public, I think it is at least partially accurate. 25 years old "leets" are the exception to the rule, as 13 years old roleplayers are.
-
A great many people I have met ingame do not use the forum. This can be seen by the 24642 forum members, and the 400,000+ game accounts.
-
im 22
and i dont have any witty comment to make so im just gonna leave it at that

Large scale surveys are rarely all encompassing. You take a sample and work from that... That is what they are doing. The age range of the game will change depending on the content you add anyway. I don't think the content should change depending on the age range. That would be very ridged. But at the same time I would hate the game to be marked "mature" so I am being slightly hypocritical but I'm sure you see my point. Even if I'm in no state to convey it eloquently.

"Mature" content doesn't attract mature people, instead it actually attracts teenager 1337s with their hormones blowing and perverted degenerates(among other dregs of the Internet, including even criminals). In fact Second (http://www.gamespot.com/pc/rpg/secondlife/player_review.html?id=433652&tag=readerreviews;continue) Life (http://www.gamespot.com/pc/rpg/secondlife/player_review.html?id=407730&tag=readerreviews;continue) is a fine example of what "Mature" content attracts. For me, truly mature content is based on complex themes like philosophy, religion, politics, moral dillemas, among other things that are too mind-challenging for the average "leet" who wants only another "pwnage" and "phat l00t". In other words: Civilization IV is a mature game for me, while Playboy Mansion isn't. I don't want PlaneShift to degenerate into this.
Review 1 of SL:
Being a strong follower of fantasy fiction role-playing and Sci-Fi, these were going to be my targets (or so I thought) for the next few days... Then I walked outside of the home, and what do I see? Rows and rows of signs for everything that your mother told you to never say/think without going blind. This pattern repeated itself with over 85% of the places I looked for to do with anything rpg/sci-fi/fantasy fiction...
So this is pretty much what the community in Second Life is, smut. A simple look at the most popular places in the sim will result in - porn, casinos, porn shops, strip joints, more porn, more strip joints, etc. A good majority of the community is very creepy...
Review 2 of SL:
...it is pretty much moderator free...So that means that tons of sickos get to use the property they buy to store child pornography and copyrighted material...
P.S.: If you really want "mature" content, you should buy certain magazines or visit certain sites, otherwise I think the game won't be playable as one would then be too busy with is own hands to use both mouse and keyboard, if you know what I mean(and if you don't, don't ask!).
I want Mature content in PlaneShift, but I do not want "Mature" content!
-
Unfortunately a very small percentage of the population find things that challenge the mind in any such profound way fun. Least of all the mass of people on the internet and the only thing the Devs get in the way of a signal of how "well" they are doing is the number of players going up.

Im 52 and my wife Ama (Rybbamma in game) is 30

I completely agree with Raleigh on this one. 'Mature' for me has more to do with the things he mentioned, rather than showing more skin, gore, or the use of...well -immature- language.
If you don't mind, could you list what more 'mature' content in PS would constitute?

There are already some hints. Owning houses should be more complex than just grinding to get the gold and buy them, and of course, there are taxes, but there should be opportunities of tax evasion as well that could then lead to deeper plot lines and allegiances with less than honest underground organizations, for example. Certain types of guilds should have need of financial support and could go bankrupt, an economic model with believable IC inflation could exist too. Persuasion should require more than just rolling dices with stats, roleplaying a "fast talk" could be important as well(this already is possible to happen in player-to-player interactions, though I would like to see it more, it's quite rare the use or respect of PCs charisma around that it makes all my charismatic characters seem useless, perhaps a "you evaluate" message or alike could indicate the first impresssion your character according to the other one's charisma?).
Every single gameplay mechanics and plotline that has a bit of complexity instead of being a thing a 13 years old boy can do, understand easily already makes a game more mature, as it does things that the younger audience won't be interested into(this is quite visible in books. Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings, though dealing with similar themes, are focused on completely different age audiences for example). Of course, I would rather to see it as the focus, not as the only thing. The game could still be accessible for younger people, even though I suspect those few of them who are interested in roleplay instead of "l33t l3v3ls" and "ph4t l00t" are usually those who have more maturity than the usual crowd of MMOs and wouldn't have much difficulty digesting the more mature themes("mature" is another thing). Want a minor example of slightly mature themes?
The old SNES Final Fantasy III, although being PG-10, has an history involving power, empires, cities being razed and occupied, unethical exploitation of its magic, and some references to massacres as well, and even without gory graphics, it can create a quite desolate feel in the later stages of it. Suggested violence and the psychological outcomes of violence instead of the act itself with all that hollywoodian/doomesque violence is a sadly underexplored theme and it doesn't alienates people from what violence is.
Deep NPCs and different reactions according to what you say to them(Being very polite would be seen as good for a noblesse type, while the rough survivalist would see it as wimpering pamper, for example), though those things are ahead, for now the charisma idea isn't bad, as long is it isn't badly used and you don't make an ugly uneducated dwarf that can draw more crowds than Jesus or Gandhi.
-
27. I always thought I was an old man compared to a lot of you, but I guess not :D
-
I'm feeling pretty young too with my 23 years of experience in life :P
-
Nice to know I'm not oldest for a change lol \\o// ~~~~31

-
Personally, I think it would take more maturity to run a RPG free of violence.
-
Maturity. In mind. Not necessarily in age. ;)
-
Well im 37 and most of my guild is between the ages of 20-45. This was done on purpose our guild is fun and peacful because of it. And those that are younger are respectful and kind.
-
Hey I now know that I'm not in the oldest group! Woohoo! I'm young!
-
I'm 19. I have no interest in obese treasure, nor elite implements of destruction. Nor the various other "immature mature" stuff previously mentioned. On the other hand, I'm not really that into role playing either :whistling: Some roleplaying is fun, but I don't like having to pretend as much as Planeshift currently requires. I might as well just turn off the computer and imagine I'm playing it (not that that isn't fun too, but it's a different fun). I'm sure it will change as more is added to the game though.
I do like exploring though; exploring the terrain, exploring the setting, and exploring the new features Planeshift comes out with every so often. Just watching it grow is kinda fun. I don't play much so it doesn't really get boring. And I do a little questing too.
The fan-art section has also inspired me a little, and if I can get more of the loose ends on my other projects tied up I might try my mouse at some contributions of my own. Blender gets easier every time I run it, and my Wacom tablet is begging me to give it something to do...

I'm one of those who's age flls into the last category available, mature enough to know better, still young enough to enjoy life, and wise enough to see the potential of this game, (anyone who has witnessed the breathtaking beauty of the bronze doors should know what I mean).
Age is only a number i've been told, and although over 45, ( i'm 46 ), I still enjoy exploring new experiences, nice to see that most of those who have responded to this poll are in the upper reaches of the age range ( so far ).
I would love to see Planeshift develop into a more mature product, getting away from the endless 'hack and slash' of other MMORPG's with their emphasis on killing each other for 'fun and profit', in fact it was this very feel to the community that attracted me in the first place, ( ok, so the rat killing to make enough early start up trias might be seen as hack and slash, but it's only a start), that and the generally mature outlook of what is really only a 'tech demo' rather than a finished, (or even beta), game. Yes there is a long way to go yet, but it already shows so much promise, an adult game, yes, but not in the sense that it contains 'adult' content, in fact I haven't seen anything I wouldn't allow my kids to see.
I hope that this poll and some of the replies in this thread will show that computer games are for all ages, and that it's not the elite sparkly weaponry, or the showing off the top armour to the noobs that makes a game, it's the players and the developers, working together that makes it.
Like others, I was also put off by the emphasis on RP, however I can see the sense in it now that i've explored some of the world we have so far, it gives more depth and richness to the experience, although my characters will always be a little taciturn, and seem less involved, since i'm very much a loner, preferring to see what is over the next hill, or around the next corner.
Did I mention just how awestruck i'm feeling today after my first trip to the bronze doors?
-
I like you.

ok, I'm feeling old now, 44... :-[
Where/who are the voters over 45? ;)

well ya can't be too much of an old fart since you married a "younger woman" :P
(I'm only 36 ... nee-ner)

*does a little counting on his fingers*
I'm not all that surprised by the bias to the older age groups. The fifteen year-old hack-and-slashers would have gotten bored within fifteen minutes, realised that whilst there is potential for massacre, it'd take far too long, and buggered off. Please note that I was not implying that *all* fifteen year-olds are of this nature.
Look, I can draw you a Venn diagram, or do some nice logic arrows.
???
-
I'm 19.
-
I'm five. Beat that.
-
Am 25.5, so i picked 26-30 (someone said it, we don't become younger, but older....darn, am becomming old....oh nooooo :D)
-
I'm five. Beat that.
I don't beat 5 year old...
:P lame
-
27, close from 28 by now, a matter of days.
-
[Former age shown was uncorrect and was a lie posted by my brother, sorry. True age shall not be revealed. :)]
-
14 and pround! :D
(I know its too late to vote, just thought id get that in there)
-
15 :sweatdrop:
-
aha... is this poll closed or something?... I can't vote...
Anyways 16
-
This really should be unstickyfied now
-
yes you're right
-
pale i look forward to your diagram
-
My diagram? *checks up a few posts* Oh, ::)
Have been dealing with teenagers recently, can revise my statement that "not all fifteen-year-olds are instant-gratification-seeking hack'n'slashers" to output "true" p < 0.05 for a chi-square test. Definitely statistically significant.
Yeah, someone shouldn't let me near my computer before I've (a) woken up (b) had some tea ;)
-
Looks like I am to late to vote :(
-
I'm 23 . \\o//
-
twenty in two months yesterday! (good lord I'm getting old....>.<)
-
I'm 14, and been playing the game since I was 12. My guild is made up of 14-25 year olds, and I know quite a few players who are around my age. I agree with the idea that there should be mature content, and not "mature" content on PS, because not only does it make a game more interesting, but I do love that kind of thing! :D
-
*smiles at Liadan*
Don't worry I'm still older and always will be till either of us leaves this world for the next ;)
-
19 in 2 months!!! woohoo!!! \\o//
-
Looks like I am to late to vote :(
fixed !
-
I will come clean and tell the truth about my age now. I am 12!
-
God, am I so old ?
Why am I 25 ? I want to be 12 again !! :'(
-
ok...i will say teh truth aswell, I AM ALSO 12!!! :woot:
-
/me thinks, "No wonder he's so immature." :P
-
i'm sparti^H^H^H^H^H^H 12!
-
* Raa thinks, "No wonder he's so immature." :P
*Velh can't but to grin amusedly*
-
say, are there any peopel who are under 12 years old here?
-
So the post has been inactive for a while, but I was curious and happened to find it. :whistling:
I'm 27 myself, and must say I'm impressed by how many '25+' players there are here... they are a rarity in most games, and I think it speaks very highly on this game as a whole.
-
18, but people tend to think I'm >30 on the 'net. Of course, it's different in a community where just about everyone uses proper spelling and punctuation in complete sentences.
However, there's one point in every MMORPG where I'm tempted to use the "How I mine for fish?" joke.
-
15 an lovin it. lol. That's right folks, the hormonal teenager is coming to town.
-
Dude! I thought you were older than me! I guess you're just that convincing of a roleplayer. :P
-
26 here
-
However, there's one point in every MMORPG where I'm tempted to use the "How I mine for fish?" joke.
Please, please - play with us! Purrties love fish and ch... ahm, jokes! :D
-
I may want to add that I'm 456... Just so I don't forget. ;) Getting hard to keep track, you know?
-
Dude! I thought you were older than me! I guess you're just that convincing of a roleplayer. :P
lol, its just my charming and witty personality. :D
And its nice to hear I'm at least moderatly convincing. ;) I thought you were older as well to be honest. Most of the other people I ever rped with were in the midst of their mid life crisis. lol, and people wonder why I don't qrp.
-
Bah, roleplay's for all ages! I've been at it since I was eleven or twelve!
...I think twelve. That was when LotR came out in theatres...*had a stereotypical elf character*
-
364.....in dog years. Man it's a long run to The Bronze Doors for a Klyros my age........
-
I'm 16, with 14 years of experience.
-
I'm 17, though I found out about this game 2 years ago. Today I just happened to remember about this game, and decided to check out how it's going. A lot has changed since then, mostly for the good, but I do miss a few things.
-
fourteen here, hooray not mid-life crisis yet!! :D
-
I'm actually fairly surprised that it's more older people on here...most of the roleplay games with actual roleplaying I'd done before were more HS and college kids...y'know, people that have shorter days/more days off and/or can shuck their work more often than those doing the average 9-5 grind (or in my case, crazy schedule that doesn't work for any party involved because the store is only a few days old D: ).
-
36 and been playing RPG's since i was 10 - just to prove candys point.
RPG is for all ages :)
-
I'm surprised most people are from ages 31 to 45... Kind of creepy.
Don't most people start young? I mean, when you play games when you're a little kid and make up a character, isn't that technically LARPing?
-
I'm surprised most people are from ages 31 to 45... Kind of creepy.
Why is it creepy? ::| You do know you will age right Raa? ;D

:) Ya, I started young. It was called Atari (released in October 1977), then it when to Nintendo and Sega. The internet didn't exist when the "older generation" was super young and it only became known in the early 1990's. So the "older generation" didn't have what the "newer generation" does when it comes to online gaming. Wait ... why was I typing this? Oh ya .... because fo the question "Don't most people start out young ......?" Well I didn't answer the question that you were really asking but ah ... there some useless info none the less.
-

Well... compared to my age... it's a bit creepy. And then when you consider the... Nevermind. :-X

I mean Live Action Roleplaying. Example: me and my friends would make up elf/dwarf/orc/whatever characters and go down to the river or run around the neighborhood and fight with fake swords, axes, spears and all that stuff. I don't think Atari, Nintendo, and Sega really count. :P
-
I started young. I remember playing cowboys and indians in the early 60's among other assorted things including Monopoly, Parcheesi and whatnot. That faded, as it always does and by the early 70's I was a hardcore pinball freak which led to the early video games such as Pong and Asteroids. Then there was DnD and Board Games unlike those kiddie ones such as Tactics II, Rail Baron, Sniper and many many more. Eventually the video games killed off the pinball and when computers advanced to sufficient power the board games became computer games but of course that completely ignores the role of Nintendo and other console games.
Well how creepy is that?
-
/me screams.
:o
-
I don't think Atari, Nintendo, and Sega really count. :P
Well not unless your using them, pretending that they are part of a spaceship and it's controls. :P
Pinball! Pinball is great and one of my favorites. (Now that I understand the question Raa was asking...) I started out young too. My step father built me a shield and sword out of plywood. I also had alot of dress up clothes and we would use the type of clothing we were wearing to determind the type (theme) of game we were playing. I used to use sparkles and throw them as I was casting spells so it looked more realistic. Oh fun times!
-
I roleplayed that I was a cat for a few years.
If I knew then what I know about furries now, I'd have immediately moved on to my scientist/archeologist and/or detective/spy phase...D:
And of course, there was playing House and the like, but I preferred to throw in fantasy twists like having a pet dragon or playing as a family of giants. I also played console games, but started out with Crash Bandicoot and Gex. I didn't discover Final Fantasy and Zelda 'til after I found online play-by-post.
-

Live Action Role Playing is cool, i attended an event called the gathering a few years back - you get about 6000 people crammed on a field for 4 days with a big battle on the last day - run by an organisation called the lorian trust i think.
As for being creepy - get down girl *slaps her about a bit with a latex sword*
Who you calling creepy - what you got to remember is that RPGS started when we were your age and at that time were generally left in the hands of adults to organise the games. Makes sense that in a role play enviroment that the sons and daughters of gary gygax are found here :)
