Ever write a post that seems like an infomercial?
Right, take two.
I've been drawn back into writing lately. The urge to create characters and have them kill each other has been growing exponentially. Now, when it comes to writing, there are a couple things I've noticed. 1) I'm terrible at writing posts like these and 2) I'm easily distracted.
I imagine most people are when they try to write directly onto the computer. Whether by PlaneShift, IRC or some very annoying paperclip. Which is why I went a-hunting.
Anyways, long story short. I found Dark Room (http://they.misled.us/dark-room), which is a very ironic name for an app that helps you write considering it's bloody hard to write in a dark room. All that aside, it's a wondrous app that helps you focus on writing and not get distracted by those annoying whelps on IRC.
It is, above all, simple. It's there for writing and nothing else. Try it out, you might like it.
Dark Room is PC only
If you are on Mac, then there are half a dozen apps for you, writeroom (http://hogbaysoftware.com/projects/writeroom) being the best known.

I like going outside with a note pad (actual paper, not a computer). That way I'm so overwhelmed by things to distract me I don't get distracted.
-
Paper is good, but too easy to lose--that and my writing hand gets tired quickly. Normally I start out on paper when i have the initial idea, and then move everything to the computer when I go back to it.
Waylander, I"ve been looking for an app like that for a while. Know any Open Source ones?
-
No, I'd be pleasantly surprised if there was one.
Dark Room is free, if that's all you are looking for but, I searched for a good ten minutes looking for opensource ones and couldn't find any.
Oh, right, and there is Writer (http://writer.bighugelabs.com/). Which is the same but internet based. Never used it, so, your own risk and all that jazz.

I just use nano on a free shell...

My husband swears by yWriter3
It enables you to plan stories, map time lines... and produce quick synopsis too, at the same time as develop your characters...

I need something that will run under Linux. I will look at Writer later. I've been trying to develop my own SQL/ruby on rails project to this same end, but i'm too busy/lazy/uneducated to get very far.
-
@ Rayken it will apparently run under Wine so when I get an answer to an email asking about the license I'll give it a go
