Aeshion once again returned to the city of Hydlaa for a short visit. Her flower shop on her home level was doing just fine, but she had hoped that perhaps the flowers of the First level had finally begun to bloom. She had been told of their great beauty by many a person before her first travels to the city , and that was indeed why she had come.
On her first trip, she looked around the city itself, and even as far as the hills near the city everyone called ‘Oja’, but no flowers she could find. Mushrooms she did find aplenty, but no one in their right mind would want to buy a bouquet of fresh mushrooms. Just the thought had made Aeshion cringe.
Now on this second trip, she still had yet to locate even a single bloom. She asked around as best she could, though that did not come easy to one with no voice. None of the people she met and asked had ever seen a flower in the lands, and many of them had gone much further than her. In fact, no one even seemed to notice the lack of flowers until she brought the subject to light.
Aeshion began to wonder what curse had befallen this land, so that the look, the smell, and the soft touch of the gentle bloom had vanished even from the people’s minds. Sadly, she began to wonder if it was once again time to go back to her home. Even more so since Einnol, the one she had really come to see, seemed to have vanished. Flowers gone, Einnol gone, and a foreboding feeling kept creeping through her skin.
Perhaps there would be a miracle, and Einnol would return to tell her nothing had changed with the…thing she feared, and the flowers would burst into full bloom. Perhaps…
[[Yes, I know this is not the storywriting forum, so on to the art! Your challenge is to put a smile on Aeshion's face by transforming this:
(http://img167.imageshack.us/img167/3210/grassjo0.th.jpg) (http://img167.imageshack.us/img167/3210/grassjo0.jpg)
into something more like this:
(http://img167.imageshack.us/img167/8096/wildflowersgl7.th.jpg) (http://img167.imageshack.us/img167/8096/wildflowersgl7.jpg)
Or something of your own choice or vision.
To make it a little easier, this is the original texture (in PNG form, the newest client has it in DDS, grass_short01a.dds):
As grass makes for poor flowers, please make your textures as much from scratch as you can. if you want to go to the extreme, you can make an entirely new sprite model. Bonus Moonpoints to someone who creates a hold-able flower out of one of the equip-able items, or makes flowers bloom at the Magic shop.
Timeline... well, you have until Aeshion decides to leave again. So, she could leave anytime, unless something comes along in roleplaying to make her want to stay longer. Good arting and RPing!]]

Would indeed be nice to see some flowers. Though, if you want the grass to be kept, and just some flowers to be added to the grass-model, the poly count will shoot up immensely. What would be the highest allowed amount to aim for?

There's the flower I would like to make holdable but I can't get Blender2crystal to work. :(
-
If you're thinking of flowers that will appear in groups and patches for a field or garden, they need to be made of flat planes and transparency. There's really no other way to avoid immense lag and polycounts skyrocketing. If there are going to be 3-4 flowers in one area overall, they can be made of some geometry. Otherwise though, stick to planes.
-
Anyway you wish to do it is fine. Keep the grass and add flowers, or start from scratch with your own grass and flower texture. The challenge is to create a new 2D texture for the 3D two plane model, as Karyuu stated. If you need the model to be taller or wider, or have a special 'flower' plane, you will have to change the mesh to fit. I do not recomend using other than the two or three plane vegitation models that are used in the game now.
From the top, a two plane looks like an X. A three plane model can be used to add a horizontal surface across the X if you need to look down at the model.

I've tried to change the grass png a bit, and this is what I've got:
Changed PNG:

As you can see, I've added two flowers and made the grass a bit more shiny.
Difference between the old grass and the new one:

Xayton,
your link brings me to some italian site=/.. maybe you can convert/save that file as png and then use Imagehoop (http://www.imagehoop.com) or some other free-hosting site?
-
Ok, now the images are hosted on imageshack, thanks.
Is the DDS link working? If not i will try to host it somewhere else (even if the dds can be made from the png).

Here's my humble try of a holdable flower. (123 verticles, 194 faces)

Replaced the rockpick with it, and now alot of people are running around with flowers ;D

I know, I know, the model is not quite in hand, but it will be hard to tweak that in the file code by hand. :surrender:
Anyway, just a first try.

/me starts laughing.
Ha! I love it. The Laanx temple looks so much more friendly now, and a Kran with a flower.... what can I say? Priceless. This is looking to be a good start. Keep em coming.
-
If you're making petals out of planes, remember that you can use transparency to give them more shape and save polys :) Take a look at the flower models in /art/items.zip for examples.
(And don't go over 100 triangles for these.)

The power of paint! ..and a person with too much spare time..

Hmmm.... Tanner, something about your irks me. The flowers don't seem natural and seem to stick out more than flowers should. True, the colors of flowers stick out in grass, but it shouldn't seem separate from everything. Xayton, yours is very nice, and the two holdables seem quite nice as well.

it is not ment to be good lol i spent 5 minutes making it on paint, and did you not spot the fruit in the background ^^

I know it, I'm a pixel artist, though my creation lack background so even I had to use the 'old' gras for it ^^ But if you look good enough you'll see the green sticks of the flowers (hand made) ;)
>_< I just can't get the stampers right, well, If 'you' can, Please modify mine, then it's perfect for me to use :P
:flowers:
and At least I can say, mine is the most colorful :P

I think UTM's version fits better, even though Socius' and tanner's look more worked through. Socius' somehow reminds me of the lolipop guild...
-
Either I'm being stupid or you need to read more carefully Baldur.
-
Now what.
Aha, pardon. Xayton, not UTM.
-
So far I like Socius' the most. My only critique point is that the grass is a tad too green, especially since there's a huge contrast to the ground now. And yes, it's also a bit too colorful all in all. Maybe one set of flowers less would be good, or just less flowers overall.

...
So nice! It would be good to see it in game, we have got useless pies, we could have flowers... any hope?
-
Please note:
The foliage in "Serious Sam: Second Encounter" (v1.5) is one that looked rather perfect to me. One reason will have been that the transparency starts smoother than in PlaneShift. We should have a way to modify the start and end range of the transparencing zone.
The most important drawback is probably that the edges of the opaque texture part is sharp. So a huge color/brightness difference to the texture below does a lot harm. But I am not sure if soft edges are supported well for this effect (technically: not DXT1a, but DXT5 would be nice).

Take a look at /art/things/items.zip :)

:D Well I've kinda updated mine previous one, This one is totally hand made, coloring pixel by pixel (And the use of some gimp filters) I've made this and i think it's fair to say it doesn't look anything like the original one (With that I mean the original game texture)
PNG:
Shot:
(http://img338.imageshack.us/img338/6775/shot47we6.th.jpg) (http://img338.imageshack.us/my.php?image=shot47we6.jpg)
PS: To make it work in game I've done this:
Open the abocve PNG file with Gimp (http://www.gimp.org/).
Then go to your PS map, art, world and unzip/unpack the hydlaa_ plaza.zip file.
'Save as' The PNG file in the unpack hydlaa_plaza map as "grass_short01a.dds" (please note that you will need the dds plugin for Gimp (http://registry.gimp.org/plugin?id=4816) to do this).
When you do this a window will pop up asking for the Compressing type (I used none) the format (I used default) and two tags, Click the tag saying "Generate minimaps" and then hit 'enter'.
Woopi, the file should be saved now :P if not you've done something wrong ;D anyways then you will have to 'repack/rezip' the whole map again (Note that you do NOT put the 'map' hydlaa_plaza in the zip file, but JUST 'the content') Power up your client and TADA there they are, Socius's smelly flowers :P
