Title: The Steel Market
Post by: Tolol on August 21, 2007, 09:44:04 am
Heya ... I don't want to start another thread about the economy ! (or the lack of it)

Just a simple question:

I reached a point where I'm up to decide about Tolol's business-future and I would very much like to get back to steel business.
I yesterday spent some time at Harnquist in Hydlaa and tried to watch what I call the steel market.
As far as I could see, there were only a few crafters at the anvil and I heard nobody calling for steel.

Is this a result of the everywhere discussed economy-problem (this could make this thread end here) or are there other issues that just let me see it like that ?  (maybe timezone related?)

I would be very grateful, if some of the crafters could tell me their short opinion about how they see the steel market in the near future and if it makes sense for me to start steel production again.

Thank you !

Well if I remember correctly , the steel stock market is doing quite well ,  for those that make steel stock, such as the Imperial Trades. So it can be quite profitable. But it takes  some organisation and time. Because you have to mine coal ..then you have to mine iron then you need to put them in a furnace ect. ( I don't know the exact process:P)

But if your willing to commit some time to it, then you can be very wealthy. If you know the right people to sell it to,  I think (I think ....not too sure :P) steel is used to create weapons, so they're  many  weapon crafters around , just got to find them  ;)

Thank you Roberet for answering ...

/me ponders about this thread and its (only) answer ...

Are those crafters still there ?

Do crafters don't read the forums ?

Do crafters want to keep their work as a secret and don't tell me if or if not they need steel ?

Would it be seen as a spoiler to tell me so ?

Or did I just ask a stupid question ?

Well thank you ...

The steel stock market is, in general, a pretty profitable area to be in. The Imperial Trades doesn't, by any means, fulfill the demand that exists, though I am currently unsure of the state of that demand since the reduction in gold production and the IT's own production.

Reasons for little replies to your initial question are a few. First, in my case, Roberet already replied it correctly enough. He has been a part of the IT's chains in the steel stock businesses and as such witnessed a good absorption of our production by the market. Since IT's birth, actually, the steel stock may as well be the only stable business that we've ever had.

Second, yes, there are crafters, though they are, apparently, less these days. Some of them don't, indeed, read the forums. Some of them don't feel that good about sharing information of the market. And in the end, the economy still has few people that are really dedicated to it and it only. *shrugs*

Thanks again Roberet, thanks Natrina ...

I restarted steel-production and I hope somebody will buy it at a serious price.

@Reyna

Congrats ...

If you had read the inital post, you'd had known that it is a question, I asked, that wasn't asked before ...

but you did right, post as post can (it was your 27th by the way)... even if it's more redundant than .... ahh

Yliakum has never been a "steel" economy, because of several issues that I have noticed with crafting:

1. Few Crafters since crafting is considered such a grind that only a few brave souls venture there. It is "elitist" but will take only a serious powerleveler with a diehard penchant for swordmaking to go there.

2. The stablity of the system puts a lot of strain on this lot, with horror stories about steel stocks turning to piles of dust due to server crashes.

3. Several who started on this path have given up because of the above difficulties.

4. It takes a long time to really reap rewards of gaining craftmanship. You can predict the quality of sword and swords less than 200Q are hard to sell.

5. Now, with the "Gold" economy going bust...the market for Crafted Swords have shrunk to only a few "richies" who can afford it. In fact, loot weapons also dont fetch much money these days.

The cycle of demand-supply has never been completed, to make a steel economy possible. Gold was the abundant source of funds, but its dried up. Guild wars are far and few and not a happening thing, to kickstart a demand. Its the same with Duels..with points reset.

Seems Yliakum will never be a "Steel economy".

I was selling steel for 2500 trais earlier. Now, I can squeeze only 1000-1500 trais. Thats because of few crafters and how much they need to stock up.

I remember when myself and Hwnae began our first attempts at selling steel we got 500 each and we were happy... And we had to walk 50 miles to sell them in our bare feet and snow up to our waists...

But seriously, markets shift, especially now. Just stick to it and you'll make a living, sometimes great sometime minute.

steel is profitable only if you can turn it into extremely good weapons. otherwise, ya, gold is the way to go
