Title: Transparency glitches- cross-platform
Post by: plattypus1 on September 11, 2007, 12:07:35 am
Hi there all, sorry to make my first post a support request. I'm having evil horrible transparency issues in the game client. Not on other players, mind you, but objects. Barrels, doors, carts, tables, stairways, etc. I've never traveled outside of Ojaveda, but it sure does happen there. I've been able to verify this on my primary workstation, Ubuntu Linux 7.04 on a Core 2 Duo 1.6Ghz w/ 1GB of RAM and an nVidia 8300 GS w/ 512MB of vRAM, and on my web server, a PPC Mac Mini running OS 10.4 on a PowerPC G4 1.4Ghz w/ 512MB of RAM and a Radeon 9200 w/32MB of vRAM. (The second isn't really "playable" but I can log on for testing purposes.) Screenshots follow.

In case it helps, the issue seems to occur more in daylight, and less at night. Console dump contained no interesting messages to my untrained eye, but can be provided on request.
Thanks!

Welcome to the Hydlaa forums.

I remember someone had the same issues; was it Irri or a similar name? She reported transparent rocks near the Magic Shop. I am almost sure an ATI was part of that as well.

I am having those issues as well. I am using ATI too. I have seen those issues with the open ATI drivers, the free ATI drivers and under windows. I can try to play around if I get this issue with -fullbright and play around a bit with settings. Funny thing is, its not reproduceable. Sometimes rocks are rock solid, in other times they are transparent. I never found a way to say when it happens and when not. I only can say that some sort of objects are more prone, others are less prone.

Can nvidia users confirm they never seen this or a similar behaviour?

I can confirm this for NVidia card too. This happens most times when a label comes between the camera and the object. As far as I know the issue is known and will be fixed soon.

I have an Nvidia, and it happens as well, but it usually happens when I'm not directly looking at it, so I figured it was supposed to be like that.

If you'll notice, this is happening on two machines. One's got an old Radeon, the other an nVidia 8300GS. It's not graphics-card specific, nor OS specific. And I tried patching a driver information file as well, per forum searches, which failed to produce results on either machine. Pardon my ignorance, but I can't see how this is a "label" coming between the camera and object, unless there's one big, huge, massive label covering all of the Ojaveda town square. This issue occurs not only in the square, but in the tavern, and with the massive doors between areas. (Just my $0.02) It also happens for me whether I am looking at an object or not. It's constant, easily reproducible (happens every time I log in), and playing around with graphics settings hasn't provided a fix for me yet. Hopefully you're right though, and it's a known issue.

You are talking about a different issue.

One thing is: Gradually transparent objects, related to lighting, partially visible from any angle. This is the topic of this thread.

You talk about disappearing objects depending on the viewing angle. That is a different issue. And probably easier to fix: It appears to me that the "bounding box" around objects was used in visibility calculations, to exclude objects from being sent to the graphic card at all. A way too optimistic approach.

I myself am talking from transparent objects, like the rock in the 'diamond mine' in laanx dungeon. Rocks in general tend to turn transparent for me, but not depending on the angle I'm looking at them from. Sometimes they are solid, sometimes they are transparent; and stay that way until I log out.

Many other objects are affected by transparency aswell.

Funnily enough I saw this on by dual boot PC, in the windows client i have only seen transparent objects once, however after trying it on linux it was affecting a lot of objects in hydlaa, barrels outside kada-el, some of the debris in the sewers, and a pillar or two, also in the sewers, I am running an Nvidia MX400 with 64Mb, both windows and linux have good up to date drivers, and as it's the same machine I suspect it's actually a driver issue, since after i downgraded my linux drivers i had no more problems in linux.
