Title: Clash in the Wilds
Post by: Rongar Elani on September 16, 2007, 03:26:29 am
As you're strolling across the plaza, you see a small piece of paper dancing in a balmy evening breeze. Your eyes being caught, you halt watching it winding throught the air, until it finally lands right to your feet. You frown and bend down to pick it up. Giving this piece of paper a baffled look, you realize that both sides of it are empty, except for a black border consisting of clean, curved lines on one of these sides. You shrug, cogitating if this piece of paper happened to be a torn out page of a blank book from Jayose, and you almost threw it away again, when suddenly...

[OOC]

'Yet another stupid duel tournament, *yawn*'

If that's what you're thinking, don't bother reading any further, 'cause you're right: It is indeed just another tournament. ;)

To everyone who is still curious:

This will be the first event I'm going to organize, and thus, I want to keep it simple, so that it's going to run as smooth as possible and without any complications. My next one will be more sophisticated, I guarantee you, but with this one I want to gain first experience in organizing. Nevertheless, I think it'll be thrilling to participate and watch.

The rules:

Like I said, I want it to be simple; and the simplest tournaments go by the following rules:

1) No potions
2) No magic
3) Any armor
4) Any weapons
5) Jumping rule (jumping 3 times before the duel begins)

*6) No use of bugs or glitches, such as the instant-hit-bug.
*7) During the preliminaries, there will be a time restriction for each fight. If the battle hasn't ended after even 5 minutes, it'll be considered a tie, no matter who has more HP left.

I'm sorry to disappoint all the mages, who are starving for another great tournament such as the one, organized by The Way of the Hammer some time ago, but since there are a few bugs related to magic, I decided to keep any spells out of the fights, that could make someone call another person a 'cheater'. My apologies, but I was highly interested in avoiding such ugly and disturbing happenings during the tournament.

The mechanism

Part I ~ Preliminaries

The tournament is dimensioned for 24 participants in total, who are going to be put into 8 groups of 3. In part one of the tournament, each member of a group will fight 2 times against the other 2 members. For each win, they'll get a point. The best 2 of each group will be allowed to enter the knock-out rounds, the 'third best' of each group drops out.

Part II ~ Knock-out rounds

The 16 fighters who were successful in the preliminaries are going to fight eachother in K.O. rounds, which means that a loss will be the end of the tournament for them. The 2 participants of each K.O. round will be determined by principle of contingency. This means, a die roll will decide who will fight against who.

The entry fee

Yes, there will be an entry fee, and with 25,000 trias each person, it might seem somewhat steep at first glance. But please think it over, 25,000 trias is not that much money. A set of plate mail costs about the same. However, the entry fee was purely made up to assure great prizes in the end.

The prizes

With an entry fee of 25,000 trias given by 24 participants, we have a total of incredible 600,000 trias, which are going to be split as following:

1st place:  300,000
2nd place: 200,000
3rd place:  100,000

You see, if you are confident to get a place within the top 3, the prize you'll be rewarded with will be at least 4 times as much as you gave for entering the tournament, so I think everyone who serioulsy thinks to be not too bad of a dueler, will be willing to risk the 100 circles it takes to enter. C'mon now, make an effort. :)

The location

The location, and name giver of the event, will be the wilderness. To be exact, the tournament is going to be held on Ojaroad 2, right behind the green corridor, when coming from Hydlaa. The reason for why I chose this location for the venue, is that I have been looking for locations with little or no lag to begin with, and the place I chose, happened to provide no lag at all.

This doesn't mean the tournament is going to be free of all lag though, because the only lag I can avoid, is client lag, occuring due to too many objects in a scene. The server lag though, is unpredictable and has nothing to do with the environment, it can happen all the time.

Date and time of the event

I'm aiming for the event to be held on SATURDAY, 6th of October at:

19:00 GMT (UK)
21:00 CET  (Central Europe)
12:00 PST  (Western US)
14:00 CST  (Central US)
15:00 EST  (Eastern US)

(Someone correct me if I converted incorrectly.)

If we don't get 24 participants until that day, the event will be postponed 1 week, time will remain unchanged.

Things that are still missing

At least 1 camera guy, who records the whole event and either cuts it to a great (official) video himself, or passes me the material, so I can do it.

>Assigned to Restound<
-----------------------------------

2 judges, who hold the entry fees and make sure that all fights are going by the rules. (A GM would be appreciated)

>Assigned to [blank]<
-----------------------------------

A bunch of people, who take responsibility for the catering of the participants and the audience. (But without flooding the ground with pies and such, since many objects create the lag I tried to avoid)

>Assigned to Erisnas and his catering service<
-----------------------------------

The sign ups

Now to the sign ups. If you are interested in entering this event, please leave your name here and/or contact me ingame. Once your entry fee was paid, your name will be added to the list at the end of this post. I hope many people are interested and going to help me with making my first event a good one. Thanks in advance!! :)

The timing of the words appearing on that paper was perfect. Well done. As for the tournament i have no characters particularly well trained in fighting but watching is always fun. I'm not sure about the camera man getting tria though  :-\. Good luck

Kezar reads it quietly peruses itself.
I will take part to line up against the best ones of the best Yliakums.
I hope this tournament becomes really very nice ;D

I shall help cater, my little business should have enough staff to set up a booth that people can buy their food from, that way we wouldn't have to have it on the ground.  If you don't mind we will sell some novelties as well.  Would that work for you?  I believe I have enough staff to cater the entire thing, I await your reply so I know if I need to start gathering food.

Anarkia stares at the paper, more concerned with how the letters appeared than about the tournament. Her confusion subsides and she decides to join the audience, but is unsure of when the event will take place.

"This looks interesting. . . ."

Indygo squints with a bit of skepticism as the words flash accross the page.  He looks to his left, and slowly scans accross the plaza to his right searching the citizens, perhaps Xylaal is up to her antics again.  Seeing the people of Hydlaa to absorbed in their daily activites Indy realizes it is genuine.

As he rolls the paper up and sticks it in his belt, he cracks a devilish grin.  Indygo takes a deep breath, patting his belly he says to himself "Time to get in shape ol' dwarf..."

[I would love to participate.  Sounds well thought out and I think it will be a good time.  If there is anything I can do to help behind the scenes pm me  :D  Good luck with the event Rongar.]

Post by: Proglin on September 17, 2007, 12:08:10 am
Proglin dashes to the plaza hearing a story about a tournament. Quickly he grabs a piece of Paper out of a Krans hands. Quickly he starts reading. "Thwack!!!" a sudden bong on the head with a stone object. "Go get your own" the Kran says after having hit Proglin on the head and grabbing back his  flyer. But Proglin has already seen enough. With his head hung he opens his notebook and starts thinking about new dates for his next tournament.

[Wonderful :) this tournament, as opposed to some others, looks promising :) I hope you pull it off my friend.]

[Great to see the first replies! :) And even greater to see your good wishes and offers to help out. Many many thanks for that! :)

Feline: Do you think it'd be inappropriate to pay a camera man? I mean, sure, it might be a novum to pay someone for doing it, but it's not only the recording, he would also have to cut it to a nice vid, and I think it'll be worth the trias, if it happens to look professional in the end. I'm not planning to assign the job to more than one person though, so whoever is interested in the job, and somewhat experienced with recording&cutting, leave your application here.

Erisnas: I'd surely like to have your team around. One question though, are you going to charge anything for your service, or do you plan to get your trias by actually selling the stuff to the people?

However, if there are any questions left concerning the tournament itself, don't hesitate to ask. :)]

We will not charge to cater the event, and food will probably cost less than the NPCs sell it, all around 1 tria, so we don't lose to much.  We plan to sell some other things though, to make a profit on, or at least to cut our losses.  Money isn't to big at this point, only getting our business known.

My issue with paying the camera man is its pulling OOC things ingame. Forum recognition is usually enough incentive anyway.

Ah, I see. That's perfectly fine with me.

Sounds about right, but it'll make it harder to find someone for the job. Even with the promised payment, no one has applied yet. :-\

-------------------

However, there are still many tickets available, and naming date and time will probably get me in trouble, but well, I heard some approximate information would help to gather more people, so here we go.

I'm aiming for the event to be held on SATURDAY, 29th of September, at:

20:00 GMT (UK)
21:00 CET  (Central Europe)

Well then, I wanna see more sign ups, folks ;)

[IC]
Mordaan sees the piece of paper and his eyes light up as the words appear.  He holds it at arms length fearing some sort of black magic is at work, but once he realizes its a tournament, he reads it more closely.
Hmm, interesting.  He thinks to himself, "Do I once again take my chances in such an event, risking humiliation of getting pummeled?  ...yeah, why not?"

[OOC]
I'm in!  I love the intro...great job.  If the tournament is half as organized as your announcement, it should be a great success.   :D

"This event looks very well organised" Lolitra says as she surveys the pretty sign "and I like the artistic touch to the flier, most delightful" she smooths her dress a little and lets a contemplative smile, "perhaps I might watch this tournament..."

[ooc - god I hope I don't miss it, if it is as organised as it sounds - it will be great!]

As Jolilok walks trough the Hydlaa plaza, he watches the tournament invitation.

Jolilok smiles "It will be a nice one, I won't lose it"

[Rongar, I wish you good luck in your first tournament organization  ;) , tell me if I can help you with something. Best regards!]

Excellent! 13 people so far, thus we are on a very good way. If it keeps going like this, the event can forsooth be held in exactly one week from now. :)

PS: It won't happen overnight, but anyway, when we've got the 24 participants, sign-ups are still possible. It's always better to have more people available, for the case, someone from the core suddenly calls off. However, those who do not partake - for one reason or another - will get their entry fee back, of course. ;)

*Edit* Update to the rules: See first post.

Post by: Nefert on September 23, 2007, 09:21:28 am
Nefert cannot help but notice something flapping in the distance as she is talking to some friends in the Plazza. Just as she finishes her conversation there is a heavy downpour and whilst everybody is running for cover Nefert decides to go and see what it is. She picks it up but it tears as it is so wet. She sees that something has been written but she cannot make it out. Intrigued by this she leaves the torn pieces to dry out. On returning after placing the pieces together she starts to read although with great difficulty as the ink has smudged badly but is able to see enough...she smiles and decides to think about it.

(ooc)
I loved the way you presented this, well done.

Well then, it would need a small miracle to get 10 and more people signing up within a few days. New date for the tournament:

6th of October, time schedule remains unchanged.

One participant stepped out, so there is a total of 17 now. Everyone who wants to hop in, I'll give you time until friday (October 5th). If we don't have 24 participants by then, I'm gonna cut the starting field down to 18 and make some modifications to the mechanism. :surrender:
Title: Re: Clash in the Wilds
Post by: Rongar Elani on October 06, 2007, 12:16:47 am
Well then, 18 participants have signed up, and the date for the tournament is tomorrow, 19 hours, 43 minutes from now on. Now since I don't want to postpone the event yet again, I am forced to make some changes, like stated above.

The new mechanism

Part I ~ The preliminaries

The starting field is now cut down to 18 fighters, who are going to be put into 6 groups of 3. Each member of a group will fight 2 times against the other members. Points will be given depending on the outcome of each fight. The best 2 of each group forthcome.

The 12 remaining fighters will again be put into groups, this time into 4 groups of 3. And again, each member will fight 2 times against the other 2 members. Points will be given depending on the outcome of each fight. The best 2 of each group will then enter the finals.

Part II ~ The finals

The 8 fighters who were successful in the preliminaries are going to fight eachother in K.O. rounds, which means that a loss will be the end of the tournament for them. The 2 participants of each K.O. round will be determined by principle of contingency. This means, a die roll will decide who will fight against who.

The points

For each win in the preliminaries, the fighters will get 2 points, but like I said, the fights in the preliminaries are restricted to a maximum of 5 minutes, If none of the fighters have defeated their opponent by then, both will get 1 point. This doesn't mean though, that one could just run away for 5 minutes. If there is no action being taken to actually win the fight, a disqualification will be the result.

So, to summarize:

A win = 2 points
A tie = 1 point
A loss = 0 points
Run away for 5 minutes = disqualification

The prizes

Even though we didn't get the entry fees of 24 participants, the prizes will remain unchanged. Promised is promised ;)

1st) 300,000
2nd) 200,000
3rd) 100,000

That's all folks. I hope I formulated everything well enough to be understandable. I'm sorry for the inconvenience, but not everything turns out how it was planned in the beginning. Acts of god, you know. ;) Anyways, good luck to all the participants, and to a hopefully good show!

PS: Sorry for triple-posting. :whistling:

I will not be able to attend this event, however if you are on in a few hours I may be able to supply food for you to use.  I may be able to get some staff there but no promise.  Lets just hope that the the event goes of without any problems.

ATTENTION!

I made a mistake in converting the time zones! >:(

The tournament will begin at 7PM GMT, not 8PM GMT!

Please, if you are one of the participants, or know some of the other participants, tell them! I would do it myself, but I have RL issues that hold me from doing it.

Again, pretty please tell everyone that it will start at 7 PM GMT, which is in about 5 hours and 50 minutes from now on! Thanks a bunch!

/me curses timezones and the daylight-saving-time crap!

A BIG thank you to everyone who attended, be it by participating or by watching!

It didn't really turn out how it was planned, and the server wasn't in the ... best condition. Nevertheless it went not too bad, although it was quite some stress to fill the holes that appeared due to about 6 or more people not showing up ;)

Anyways, I had a good time, and hope everyone else too.

Here the rankings:

5th place: Akashani, Ribenoly, Tomislav, Sakmette, Quarry and Plank
4th place: Shalier, Kemedes and Jolilok
3rd place: Vesego
2nd place: Stylee
1st place: Rongar

Congratulations everyone! It was a great show, thank you!

(*cough* Yes, the worst case has actually happened, I won my own tournament.)
