If you have a video card with 64 or 128 meg video ram then there is a way to improve speed (and also lag) when running MB.
First tip is of course to upgrade to the 007 release. If you can\'t use the updater then check http://www.planeshift.it for more info about that.
But there is another thing you can do. In c:\\Program Files\\PlaneShift\\data\\config\\opengl.cfg you will find the following four lines:
Video.OpenGL.SuperLightMapNum0 = 12
Video.OpenGL.SuperLightMapNum1 = 148
Video.OpenGL.SuperLightMapNum2 = 48
Video.OpenGL.SuperLightMapNum3 = 0
If you have 128M ram on your video card (NOT main memory. I\'m talking about video card memory) you can change these values to:
Video.OpenGL.SuperLightMapNum0 = 15
Video.OpenGL.SuperLightMapNum1 = 185
Video.OpenGL.SuperLightMapNum2 = 60
Video.OpenGL.SuperLightMapNum3 = 0
This will enable MB to use more video memory on the card for textures and it will improve speed. If your card only has 64M RAM then those values may perhaps be too much and decrease speed again. You\'ll have to experiment but if it is not optimal you might try something like 14,160,55,0 for example.
A very short summary: the first number is the number of 128x128 textures used for lightmaps. The second number is the number of 64x64 textures and so on. Every pixel of a texture takes 4 bytes memory so you can calculate yourselves to how much memory that corresponds. Also keep in mind that the video card memory is also used for other things. Don\'t use it all up. I recommend using perhaps half of it for this.

Well like I said. Edit the opengl.cfg file and change the values like I explained in my message above.
Greetings,

Nice tip Jorrit thanks, I\'ll try it next time I\'m on.

Huh? He just explained it step by step in his post. You have to open the file \'opengl.cfg\' in Notepad or other text editor and then make the changes he suggested - does that help?

i know how to CHANGE the veluse
but i dont know how i find out wat\'s best

I have one simple question what does MB stand for. where can I find a link or a thread explaining the terminologies used here?
Thanx

is it worth it at all to try and tweak that file on a 32 mb video card... i know you said 64 or 128, but could i improve at all? or should i just leave well enough alone?

I assume by him talking about tweaks for 64mb and 128 mb means that it is already tweaked out for a 32mb card. Speaking that the majority of the population is still using 32mb.

MB = Molecular Blue
Which is the game that this forum was made for... How did you get to the forum if you aren\'t here from the game page? Just curious.
-
Many Thanks My GeForce 3 is all the happier

I thought this game was Planeshift
-
The Games name is PlaneShift and the current version of PlaneShift is called Molecular Blue,and the next version of PlaneShift will be called crystal blue at least that\'s what i think its called anyway I say it again thanks jorrit the game runs that much better now
-
My gfx card is a Geforce 2 mx/mx400 and thats 32 MB, can I still use those same values to tweak the card? Sorry if the answer is wrapped up in here somewhere, I am a bit out of it.
-
lets say i have 16mb of ram for video, which is below the requirements... in that case should i concider lowering the numbers ? heh
-
In that case you should consider getting a different card.
-
ya but i cant. cuse iam using a laptop. and i would have to replace everything cuse its on the main board
-
What do we do if our card is larger than 128MB?
-
Great!! I have 128mb!
But I hope you\'re not expecting evryone to do this at the final realese, the games should change these values by itself.
-
how do u check ur card?
-
Jorrit,
I assume these changes only take effect when you restart planeshift correct?
-
lol, yes of course :)

If your on windows right click on desktop and properties and then settings...........you will see your card name....

The only thing I see in \'settings\' myself is resolution, colourdepth and the Advanced button. :P
Not that I don\'t know how to see details for my own card, just pointing out that this is all you see if you use Windows 98.

Question on the math.
128MB card settings:
128 x 128 x 4 bytes x 15 = 983,040 bytes
64 x 64 x 4 bytes x 185 = 3,031,040 bytes
32 x 32 x 4 bytes x 60 = 245,760 bytes
16 x 16 x 4 bytes x 0 = 0 bytes
Total memory usage = 4,259,840 bytes or about 4MB
This is no where near the \"half\" of video memory you recommend using. So, is there a flaw in my math somewhere?
Does anyone know?

Um.... experiment?
Whats up with all the questions? Im tempted to say something mean but I wont. I think the original post is quite explicit.
Awesome tip by the way. I would post elsewhere so the developers know, this would be something good to have auto-detected in the next release.

:D :D :D :D Make a backup. :D :D :D :D
-
thats good advice, but not that important in this case.

OK let\'s just straighten something out... Anyone who has successfully tweaked a 64meg card using this can they post the numbers up? Jorrit, You said you were going to tell us how to tweak 64 megs and you didn\'t. That was mean.
