I was thinking about medicine in the middle ages, and how many diseases and sickness that went around back then.
how would people react to this in Yliakum?
would a doctor be helpful?
would everyone rely on magic to clear up illness and disease?
would there be any point to herbal remedies and home recipes for certain ailments?
a few questions i have, keeping doctor in mind for my next characters proffesion. i wanted to see what people thought about the idea of sickness in Yliakum.
-
I think it is a good idea, although some people won't like it. Also, this could be much work for the devs. Perhaps have potions that cure them, but you have to take them in the right order, or something.
-
I guess i didnt specify what i meant.
what im talking about is in a roleplaying fashion, i mean, how would everyone react to what i said above, if it was RPed.
would the response to a doctor be positive or would it not be worth it, because of the use of magic.
and perhaps people who are content with their character never having any ailments or problems with their bodies.
-
Well, some illnesses may be curable by magic, but others may have been caused by that itself and are not affected by other magics. Therefore herbs/remedies would be required. As we know, viruses and bacteria mutate to fit the world around them, as do the creatures who are afflicted by them. Then there would be some immunity to previously experienced illnesses, which would be matched by newer diseases caused by mutated viruses/bacteria.
Uber scholarly tone there.

other than the magic part, are you sure you didnt get that out of a textbook somewhere? ;D
that changed my entire opinion on things, i didnt relise that magic could also cause problems, rather than only cure. :sweatdrop:
i guess my future as a doctor might be entertaining after all.
-
Well, I've seen roleplays in which magic caused sickness, but I don't know if the PlaneShift team is up for things like that... Just a suggestion.
-
well not only internal injuries, but external as well. broken bones, scabs, rashes, etc...
-
shame you can't get crippled limbs that lower your fighting abiliys or slows your movment entill they recover over time or are magicly healed
-
It is perfectly alright to RP that though.
-
It is perfectly alright to RP that though.
exactly my goal. :D
hopefully enough people will play along.
-
oh i would do that but i would be rp to an empty city it seems people are never around when i am.. >.< iv not seem a rp in months
-
exactly my goal. :D
hopefully enough people will play along.
I just hope you don't go totally medieval and perscribe leeches for everything!
-
haha, is there even leeches in Yliakum?
-
*/me hicups then checks to make sure Ethero dident see it* :sweatdrop:
im sure there is a nice swomp some where filled with them
-
sure there are leeches in Yliakum... just goto the plaza and stand next to harquest.. the leeches will come to you asking you for trias and weapons.. just kidding
-
Excellent!
'You have the flu? Let me just attach these begging noobs to you.'
-
I already know some guy who roleplays a doctor. He's pretty good at it... except for the high prices.
-
medical attention doesnt come cheap you know.
perhaps i can meet this doctor and learn some trade tricks.
-
if your on the cheap and you need medical help contact your nearest drunken dwarf [by drunken dwarf i mean the first dwarf you meet]
-
How much medical knowledge do they have in Yliakum? Do they know about germs and viruses or just use the healing properties of the crystal and crystal way to heal people?
Is there anything similar to latex or silicone in use in Yliakum?
Some, but not a lot. Healing isn't just for the Crystal Way, but for alchemists and herbalists as well. In addition, there are barbers who double as surgeons.
They probably wouldn't know about germs and viruses, only that someone is sick and they might know how to cure the sickness.
Heres a present from the Settings team.

Rping a doctor sounds intresting. I knew a guy who was doing it recently (haven't seen him in a bit) who was trying to start a doctoring busniess. I'm sure people would accept your rp with open arms. For those who act skeptical about it just use game mechanics to back it. You might not be able to make potions but if you have high cw, alchemy, or herbalism you'll have the stats to justify the claim.
Or you could always be one of those crazy doctors who actually have no idea what they are doing :P
-
i had a thought about a doctoring firm, which rips people off and gives false information to scam money.
but then i thought about how many people would take it OOC and tell me im a cheater and what not.
so ive decided to stick to true medical treatments, but im not gunna start as a brilliant doctor that knows all the problems and how to treat them. il begin by taking tests, and recording a book with known and tested cures, causes, and so on.
imagination can take you as far as you want to go O--)

One problem that would happen when you are a doctor is what are diseases that could occur? Now some are obvious if you get a cut then there is a chance it will get infected of course. Also, something like a cold is likely. But then you get into racial differences. A Kran's diseases would differ from and enki. Might be fun to create some though, such as EPB (enki pattern baldness) or a kran having a case of sneezing small amounts of tin. Personally I think the fact that you mentioned this on the forum makes sure you have some people who will play along.
-
The idea of diseases that are unique for each race is intriguing.
I imagine that Enki could have problems with mange, as well as fleas.
Also, if you decide to rp a doctor, could you please make a potion that relieves the stress of coughing up a hairball? I had an Enki fried with that problem.
One of you better take on pediatry because some of those races with padded feet (or hooves?) would get blisters and splints.
Also, I have this awful bunion, and I think I might have developed gout.
Speaking of gout, do you think that Kran would have a difficult problem with it ( being crystals and all)?
Dwarves would definately need beard care products. Shampoo and softening oils, and some descritely packaged bottles of hair growth potions.
Would a hair care specialist deal with horns as well as dwarf beards, or do you think that maybe a manicurist would be better suited?
Okay, enough of that silly crap lets get into some interesting ideas.
We are living in a magical world (though there are some laws in place so it won't get too crazy), and there are plenty of exotic creatures from many paths of evolution.
For example, we have the Kran. Crystals grow, change shape, and more importantly they exchange and change information, and spread that information about. They can be considered a form of life. Add in magic, and you can get the Kran.
So, could there be sentient bacteria or viruses? They are certainly have fast evolving and broad categories of species.
More importantly, do you think that a sentient virus or bacteria could tap into the energy of the glyphs?
I know that if I was a deity, and I wanted to make a versatile race to worship me and conquer infidels I'd turn my head toward to these types of life forms as a template.
If certain glyph energies such as creature magic could be controlled exactly enough, this could make for some interesting spells.
I assume that some of the spells would already utilitate them for poison like effects.
If they can be so manipulated by magic, I wonder how far they could leave an imprint on magic itself?
Could an out of control spell experiment actually make magical bacteria, or viruses?
Hmmm. Maybe magical Viruses account for enchantments, such as raising defense, and that's what enables such spells to stick with your character so well.
Interesting things could happen when these types of enchantments backfire.
I find the idea of magical sicknesses interesting, and would actually like to see them implemented in some gameplay manor (much later on of course).
As you can see, when I get into character and start learning magic, later on, you'll see some interesting ideas start to pop up.
(Of course I'll try to keep the ideas applied to a medieval base, which will make me sound even crazier.)
Now, something else for you rp doctors-
Here's a few of my character's medical issues that a doctor/barber might be able to relieve.
I got a nasty cough from all that mining, and some strange rashes from traveling through the sewers.
I also need to find a good monocle, I'm terribly nearsighted, but I can barely see out of one of my eyes anyway.
I may be developing a cyst that will make me hunchbacked, you think any of you have the proper surgical knowledge to take care of that?
I've got a twisted leg that makes walking difficult. I'd find a walking stick, but too my knowledge polearms haven't been added in yet.
