Title: ATI X1600 graphics card work-around
Post by: Trymm on October 30, 2007, 12:45:07 pm
It seems like we might have found a work-around which will solve the system crash on intel-based macs using the ATI X1600 graphics card. Use it at your own risk, of course. :)

I do not know how this relates to problems others have experienced, but feel free to try. Maybe it is a magic cure for all. ;)

As has been mentioned before, the crash problems on X1600 graphics cards is most likely caused by a driver bug. However, by disabeling some of the shader capabilities, it appears like we are able to avoid the offending code. More specifically:

1) Open the file psclient.cfg in a text editor.
2) Add the following two lines to the end of that file:

       Video.OpenGL.Shader.Cg.Enable.Fragment=false
       Video.OpenGL.Shader.Cg.Enable.Vertex=false

3) Save the file, and hope for the best.

Thanks to Iriss for patiently testing my various attempts before arriving at this one.  :flowers:

I hope it works for others too. :sweatdrop:

Didn't try long term...
But!

As it would work for about 30 seconds before this little change, running around the sewers and the city for five minutes and having no problem seems to say:
Fix!  Yay!  \\o//

You guys are my personal heroes for the next... oh... five minutes.

I have been to Oja and Eagle Bronze Doors, testing - It works wonders! No crashes at all!

 \\o//

Well done Trymm and thank you for your hard work to get this solved

Trymm - you are a genius :)

That lines also helped the graphics problem I had, after upgrading to Leopard on a 2x1,8 PowerMac.  Thanks alot.

Colim

Correction: Chrashing when trying to enter Jayose's.

I love you so much for proposing this. No crash, even after more than five minutes. And almost no lag. That was definitely worth the waiting :D
Thank for the hard work. And thanks to the team for 3.020.

it worked!! nice job, it even makes un-intended fixes!

Any text editor program I try to do this with won't let me save it when I'm done. Text Editor says just that it can not be saved. Microsoft Word tells me: This file is read-only. To save a copy give the document a new name in the save dialog box. Has this been noticed before? I am sorry if it has but I didn't want to check too much. I want to get to playing. I am having the same thing happen to me as the guy in the "The world according to me on Leopard." I am running Leopard. If anyone could tell me how to avoid this it would be helpful.

Did you copy the game from the disk image to your computer? Are you an administrator?

Hi, I just want to post some additional information. I have two machines I tried this on,

a 1st gen Macbook Pro (2.16Ghz core duo, 2gb ram, 256mb ATI Radeon X1600, Mac OS 10.5.1)
a Mac Pro (two 2Ghz Xeon 5130's, 6gb ram, 512mb ATI Radeon X1900XT, Mac OS 10.5.1)

I wasn't getting any crashes but the graphics were so garbled on both that I couldn't see or do anything. Here's a screenshot http://loveturtle.net/stuff/ps/ps-garbled.png (http://loveturtle.net/stuff/ps/ps-garbled.png)
After adding these two lines to psclient.cfg the graphical glitches were gone on both machines and everything appears to be fine (i only played for a few seconds). Here's a screenshot after the changes http://loveturtle.net/stuff/ps/ps-fine.png (http://loveturtle.net/stuff/ps/ps-fine.png)

So, Anyone experiencing horrible graphical glitches on Mac OS should try this out.

I have to chime in too. My MacBook & iMac would completely lock up after the game started (would require a reboot to unlock). After this fix, the game seems to be working perfectly on both machines. Kudos, guys!
Specs of iMac & MacBook are the same:  OS X 10.4.11. 2.16Ghz Intel core duo, 1 Gb RAM, ATI Radeon X1600 video card.

I am having the same problem, I can not save the changes. I did copy the the disk image to my folder and I am the admin. But, I've only had my Mac since March so I am pretty new to Macs and may be missing something.

if you moved the game off the dmg as you said and you are modifing the files that are on your hd, i see no reason that it does not work.

  :-[ I just moved the whole thing but your statement there clued me in and I actually copied it off to applications. I was able to edit the file and now I'll load the game to see if that solved my computer freeze problem. I apologize, I'm still learning the finer details of Mac use,  though I should have picked that bit up months ago.

I was able to walk around for a few minutes before the game froze but movement was a bit glichy. The computer didn't immediately and completely freeze up as before, I could still move my cursor. But I couldn't open anything, not even a right click  and force quit for PS. I did eventually have to reboot.

This fix appears to have solved the problem of graphics freezes/game lockups on my Mac Pro with a ATI Radeon X1900 XT card as well.

EDIT *    I was wrong.  They just occur at irregular intervals.  Please disregard this post.

Hi Guys. I hope that will help me too. My problem is:

The game crushed when try to go to arena and even when i try to load it again and again it says: "Can't load region" and crushes again.

I did open the file psclient.cfg and put that as you teach and save. Is that all that I have to do? because I still have the problem that I cant load the game an it crushes. Of course I can try to create new character, but not really want to start again. Please help  ???

I think some regions are still difficult with mac client. I would try to get a gm (best possibility is via irc on server irc.freenode.net and channel #planeshift or #planeshift-gmtalk) to work out which regions work for you.
As second possibility you can create another char and do "/who game" and look for a game master to then "/tell <name>" him. Third possibility would be to file a petition with that new char.
Preferrably irc though

I had 10.3.5 psclient, now i downloaded new one, that solve some a lot of problems from before, but now it crushes when I try to go to Ojaveda. When before I couldn't go even to east Hydlaa ( map, region not found). When now it crushes when I try to cross Ojaveda border..But for macs in general it should be ok... :'(

There is an inofficial workaround of some issues by using the maps from the original 0401 client (maps are in the world.zip in your installation; don't forget a backup before  ;) ). I don't know if it would help here so it would be great if someone can sum up what is the status of the mac-map problems.

If you can't find a download for the 0401 client pm me and we will work something out.

I am running a MacBook Pro Intel Core 2 Duo, Radeon x1600, and the character creation screen is messed up, ie, the top third of the picture is offset, I can't really see the character that I am creating, and in the game, the menus that are across the top are stretched vertically. I tried the listed two-line workaround to no avail. Any suggestions?

To fix the stretched out tool bar icons you can just click and hold in the corner of the tool bar and drag the edge of the toolbar so the icons are the shape/size you want and this should be maintained the next time you log in.
