Hello,
Unfortunately, I am unable to get past the login screen. It is mostly white with some text. I am unable to locate a field to enter Login and Password though I can see the words. When I try to type something as soon as I hit a key it states that I need to enter a password.
I am running Ubuntu 7.10 - with an ATI video card.
I found a similar post from a couple years ago here:
http://hydlaa.com/smf/index.php?topic=17516.0
but it was locked and there was no resolution. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you! - Josh

First are you using your own svn build? second check that you have the current up to date drivers then look here (http://vaalnor.mine.nu/psdoc/?q=node/39) for some tips

Hi Mordraugion,
Thank you for your informative response!
I downloaded the binary install with a torrent "PlaneShift_CBV0.3.020-x86.bin". Should I be using an SVN?
The video card is a Radeon RV200 QW [Radeon 7500], which is not listed on the ATI site. I am wondering if the card is just not up to the task ... could you recommend a AGP card that works well with PlaneShift?
Again, thank you for the help! - Josh

Did you enable restricted drivers for Ati in Ubuntu? If you didn't do that yet you can find it somewhere under System --> Administration --> Restricted Manager.
Also check if you have a skin set in the pssetup utility.
-
Hi ThomPhoenix,
Thank you for the response! Unfortunately, when I go into System --> Administration --> Restricted Manager it simply states that my hardware does not require any restricted drivers.
In pssetup it has the elves skin selected.
I tried typing in my username pressing tab then typing my password and pressing enter but it just said that no name with that account was setup. I can't see what I am typing so I could be entering stuff in the wrong fields.

what does glxinfo | grep rendering show?
-
Hi Caarrie,
Thank you for responding!
When I glxinfo | grep rendering I get:
direct rendering: Yes
If it would help I could post all of the glxinfo output.

Well,
I have a strong feeling the video card or driver is the problem. I decided to order a new video card to see if that does it. It's a cheap fanless XFX GF6200 256MB. With any luck I should be able to play in a couple days.
In the meantime, it would still be fun to try to get this card running. I have found references to the same problem going back a few years but never a resolution. Even if we could definitely state that when this happens it means the card/driver is sub par.
Even though we haven't figured it out, I really appreciate all the helps from folks here! I am impressed by the strong community.
Thank you! - Josh

Hi, I have the same problem as the original poster (did getting a new card help, BTW?). I'm using Debian etch, lspci output: VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon Mobility M6 LY.
If I run the client from the command line, I get the following messages:
ATTENTION: default value of option force_s3tc_enable overridden by environment.

I do have the background properly rendered in the setup and the updater, and also when I get the error the message telling I need to enter passwd/no account with that name, so it doesn't look like it's a problem my video card (I'm no expert on the matter though, so it might be...). Any ideas?
edited to add: after leaving the login screen on for a while (while registering on the forums typing up my post), the program produced the following errors:

Thanks for any help...

Hey tkncz,
The ATI apparently wasn't up to the task. I got a cheap fanless XFX GeForce 6200 (around $50) and it worked great! Now I am playing and thoroughly enjoying the game. Sorry I can't help you with your current card, I know it has something to do with the 3D capabilities of the card. I believe it is the driver not the hardware that is at fault but I don't know how to write drivers and ATI does not seem to have very good support for Linux. Let me know if you get things figured out!

Thanks for the reply, gaming is about the last thing I want to spend money on right now, so I'll just have to give up on this game unless I manage to get the driver working somehow. I'll probably have access to a decent computer (with working drivers) for 2 weeks, so I can at least try it out, then I'll see if I can fix this one...not holding my breath though :(
Thanks again and happy playing :)
